1 . I N T R O D U C T I O N

This operation manual explains essentials operation tasks to manage a Centreon monitoring server. Most of the chapter of this

document are based on another document: 'CES-EN-Reference-Document' wich contains screenshots and reference fields

description of Centreon front end. 'CES-EN-Reference-Document' should be delivered with this manual.

A typical chapter looks like:

Centreon menu: Path in Centreon front end.

Reference document chapter: Reference document chapter.

Add: Description on how to add the objet.

Modify: Description on how to modify the objet.

Delete: Description on how to delete the objet.

Post configuration action: Description on post configuration action.

Example for 'service groups':

Centreon front end is availabe at the following URL: http://CENTREON_SERVER_IP/centreon/

CENTREON_SERVER_IP is the IP address of Centreon central server.

The login screen asl for a valid login / password.

Default login / password at first connexion is admin / centreon

There is two ways to know the Centreon version installed on the server:

➢ the Centreon version is displayed on the login screen.

➢ Navigate to 'Administration About' in Centreon front end.→

Note: when deleting a host, all associated services will be delete as well.

3 . 3 . 1 . P A S S I V E S E R V I C E

To setup a passive service, some specific fields need to be configure so that Nagios is able to change the service state when

receiving a external command result.

➢ 'Volatile': 'Yes'

➢ 'check_command' should be 'check_centreon_dummy' and its arguments '!0!OK'. Allows to initiate the service with OK

state.

➢ 'Max Check Attempts': '1'

➢ 'Active checks Enabled': 'No'

➢ 'Passive Checks Enabled': 'Yes'

Note: if the passive service is linked an SNMP trap, just link the service to the trap in 'Relation' tab 'Services Trap Relation' of→

the service sreen.

Centreon menu: Configuration Services SNMP Traps→ →

Reference document chapter: 3.3.3

In case of an event (threshold reached...), SNMP traps are sent by monitored resources. For SNMP traps to be integrated within

Centreon, those traps need to be linked to an existing service:

• 'Manufacturer': add a new vendor if needed.

• 'MIBs': upload vendor MIB and link it to a vendor.

• In 'SNMP Traps' menu, it is possible to setup traps. Output message (displays in Centreon) or service state returned by

trap.

• 'SNMP Traps': configure traps details, change output message or linked service state

• Service setup to complete, link the service to the SNMP trap in 'Relation' tab 'Services Trap Relation'.→

When creating / modifying a Nagios object, the Nagios configuration needs to be generated and the Nagios process to be

restarted. Configuration can be generated for one specific Nagios instance or all instances.

It is recommended to generate the configuration following those three steps:

1. Tick ' Generation Configuration Files' and 'Run Nagios debug (-v)' options only. Then click on 'Export' button.

2. Check the output for warnings or errors messages.

3. If no warnings or error messages, tick all options and click on 'Export' button.

When testing the configuration, output should looks like this:

Make sure that:

➢ there is no 'Warning' 1)

➢ there is no 'error' 2)

When configuration files are moved, old configuration files are overwritten:

Output message should be 'Centreon : All configuration files copied with success', if no error message occured.

When restarting central Nagios instance, the output should looks like:

Output message:

➢ 'Running configuration check...done.'

➢ 'Stopping nagios: done.'

➢ 'Starting nagios: done.'.

In Centreon it is possible to setup downtime for hosts / services. This is a useful feature for planned maintenance operation on

the infrastructure resources. The downtime disable notifications during the time range defined.

Centreon menu: Create a downtime:

Monitoring Services hostname details Schedule downtime for this host→ → →

Monitoring Hosts service details → → Schedule downtime for this host→

View downtime list:

Monitoring Event Logs Downtime Hosts→ → →

Monitoring Event Logs Downtime Services → → →

• 'Host Name': select hostname

• 'Service': select service. Valid option only for a service downtime.

• 'Fixed': fixed downtime will disable notifications between the time frame defined. Non fixed downtime will only start if a

host / service problem occurred.

• 'Start Time': starting date and time

• 'End Time': end date and time

• 'Comments': mandatory field comments.

Modify: a downtime can't be modified. Delete it and create it again.

Delete: Tick an existing downtime in the list. Click the 'Delete' button.

It is possible to extend Centreon features by installing new modules. Follow the steps:

➢ First, install the corresponding module rpm package.

➢ Navigate to 'Administration Modules' to check the module list, the new module should be displayed here.→

➢ The action column on the right allows to install / update / uninstall a module

➢ If the icon is visible, that means you can install the module. If the icon is visible that means that the module

is already installed and can be uninstall.

Centcore: Manage communication and sync between Centreon central server and Centreon pollers. Features are:

• remote control of Nagios process

• send external commands to pollers

• retrieve performance data

• retrieve Nagios logs and archives

• SNMP traps information sync

Centstorage: Manage performance data and hosts / services statistics. Features are:

• analyze performance data files

• update RRD files or database

• analyze hosts / services data statistics

• manage RRD files (create / update / rebuild).

Ndo2db: Daemon running on central Centreon server, manage hosts / services states in database. Ndomod, ndo2db client, is

installed on each Nagios instance.

Nagios: Scheduler engine, execute check controls on monitored resources.

Crond: Linux / Unix default tasks scheduler.

Acknowledge an event allows Centreon to stop sending notifications for an host /service in error state. To do so, tick the desired

host / service in error and select 'Acknowledge' in the action menu.

You can also 'disacknownlege' a host / service if needed.

Acknowledgement is effective directly.
