An Interview with Coach
Cousins:
How do you feel about
the teams this year?
I feel like we are progressing
every day. We have a
nice core group of
returning girls which
helps and the new
players are fitting in
nicely.
How many teams do you
have? How many
players on each
team?
We have two teams, one JV
and one Varsity. Fewer
players came out this
year. Last year there
were 22 JV players
compared to 12 this
year. Varsity had 12
players last year and
this year we are look-
ing at 10-12.
Who are the coaches?
Coach Murphy is working
with the JV girls and
I’m working with the
Varsity team along
with the newest mem-
ber of the coaching
staff, Edwin Jean.
Coach Jean was a high
school volleyball play-
er and played college
soccer at Barry Uni-
versity.
How many players do
you have returning
from last year?
We have a lot of returning
players. It’s nice be-
cause they have an
understanding of the
strategies that we will
be using throughout
the season and are
able to respond in a
quick fashion.
Who are your experi-
enced players?
Leaders?
I would say our key leader
is Shannon Coglianese.
However, we have a
Coach Mullan, the cross-country
coach at Cushman, seemed very
confident about the team and the
runners. He hopes his first season
as a head coach of the cross
country team will be a successful
one. In the interview, Coach
Mullan stated “Our biggest goal
is for each of our runners to per-
sonally improve”.
Cushman has had quite the team
for cross country in the past cou-
ple of years. According to one of
the lead runners for Cushman,
Sebastian Maseri, ”The most
successful year for the cross coun-
try team was in 2012 when earned
2nd place overall in the confer-
ence. ” We concluded the inter-
view asking Coach Mullan what
his goal for the season is.
Coach Mullan said he wanted,
“To set the tone with a suc-
cessful first meet at Palmer
Trinity on September 12th,
2014.” We wish him and the
team the best of luck on a great
season.

The Return of Derrick
Rose
USA—FIBA By Zaire Wade, Stefano Sbert and Alex Sachs
Derrick Rose returned to basketball after joining the USA basketball team for the Federation International de Basketball Association
(FIBA) tournament. In the years 2012 and 2013, he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury and a medial collateral ligament
(MCL) injury. With these tragic injuries, the Chicago Bulls had to play almost 3 whole seasons without the super star. These injuries both
happened to Derrick Rose in the United Center in Chicago. The injuries didn’t really look as bad as they turned out to be, but we all
know that Derrick Rose must have felt a lot of pain

After battling back two sets and a double match point, Roger Federer came back to beat Gael Monfils in the
quarterfinals of the 2014 US Open. Federer won the match after returning a potential winning backhand by
Monfils, whose performance deteriorated late in the match. Federer felt that his play was not up to par and
felt that Monfils was in line for a victory. Federer felt that he could have played better tennis and that this
match didn't fit his standards. “I served well and stayed in the match and somehow turned it around,” said
Federer. “I felt great in the fifth, though. I started playing better and better as the match went on. It’s a great
feeling.”
In another quarterfinal Novak Djokovic beat Andy Murray in a much anticipated matchup at Flushing Mead-
ows. Murray felt good about his play. "I played well," said Murray. "Especially the first couple of sets was
some good tennis.” With the 22,000 spectators in the stadium that day, the match was played hard, but
Murray didn’t think it was enough, "So I fought hard, I played some good tennis, but it wasn't enough." It was
a battle of great opportunity, but Novak took it all. Next up for Djokovic is a semi-final showdown with Kei
Nishikori of Japan. Roger Federer will meet Marin Cilic in the other semi-final.
