waal is zo’n project.
Bij de ontwikkeling en
bouw van dit innovatieve
baggerschip hebben we
als Kooiman Groep alles
in kunnen zetten wat we in
huis hebben. Uitdagende
ontwikkelingen en innova-
tieve technieken kwamen
samen in een schip met
een prachtige belijning en
een fraaie vormgeving. We
zijn er trots op!
Voor de bouw van de Rei-
merswaal hebben we ruim
twee jaar intensief samen-
gewerkt met Jos en Bert
den Herder. Nagenoeg
elke dag waren zij te gast
op onze scheepswerf. Ze
waren aanwezig bij de
vergaderingen en bleven
betrokken. Dit is voor ons
samenwerking zoals we
die graag zien. Daarnaast
hebben nagenoeg alle
Kooiman-bedrijven hun
steentje bijgedragen.
Broadly speaking, the Kooiman Group can count itself amongst
the so-called ‘modest organisations’. With great enthusiasm
we do our utmost to satisfy our customers; usually without
blowing our own trumpet. However, from time to time projects
arise that we are so
proud of; we have to
make an exception.
The construction of the
Reimerswaal is a case
in point.
In the development
and construction of
this innovative dredger
the Kooiman Group in
its entirety was able to
deploy everything in-
house. Daring designs
and innovative enginee-
ring merged into one
vessel boasting mag-
nificent profiling and
lovely styling. She is our
pride and joy!
In the construction of
the Reimerswaal we
worked intensively with
Jos and Bert den Her-
der for more than two
years. They joined us
at our shipyard pretty
much every day.
They attended meetings
and remained involved
through out. This is how
we like to cooperate.
Moreover, nigh on all
the Kooiman companies made a contribution. Together they built
a vessel with which Den Herder father and son can embrace the
future. Read on to discover all that the build entailed.
We zijn er trots op

De Reimerswaal heeft indrukwekkende
afmetingen. Het baggerschip is 130 m lang
en 22 m breed. Met deze afmetingen is de
trailing suction hopper dredger het grootste
schip dat de Kooiman Groep ooit heeft
gebouwd.
betonindustrie. Maar met de Reimerswaal
kunnen we ook zand winnen voor
kustbescherming en strandophoging. En we
kunnen grind leveren voor de fundering van
windmolens.
trossen - in positie houden.
of boegkoppeling. Is het zand bedoeld
voor strandophoging, dan kan het via de
boegkoppeling worden geperst en op de
wal worden gespoten. Den Herder: “Met
de jetpomp-installatie kunnen we meer
en minder water aan het beun toevoegen.
De Reimerswaal kan dus rainbowen
oftewel ‘walpersen’ via het leidingsysteem
en ‘klappen’ via de bodemdeuren. Het
rainbowen kan over een afstand van 60
meter. ‘Walpersen’ kan over een afstand van
twee kilometer.”
windmolenmarkt. Het intensieve krachtenveld
waaraan windmolens zijn blootgesteld,
vraagt om extreem zware funderingen. “De
Reimerswaal kan het grind bij de windmolens
storten via een transportband van 48 meter”,
vertelt Den Herder. “Dat betekent dat we veel
veiliger kunnen werken. Het dynamic position
system – kortweg ‘DP’ - zorgt ervoor dat
de Reimerswaal tijdens de werkzaamheden
exact in positie blijft.
lang. Anderzijds was het geweldig boeiend
om gedurende het hele bouwproces kind-
aan-huis te zijn bij de Kooiman Groep. Hier is
de klant echt koning.”

Until only recently the Reimerswaal still
dazzled in the Kooiman Group shipyard.
Connoisseurs admired her slim line hull,
the blue-green varnish and beautiful lines
in which the vessel had been painstakingly
finished. The dredger now sails between
England, France and Denmark. Onboard
everything is on hand to excavate sand
and gravel and to subsequently deliver it
in all desired formats at the destination of
choice.
The Reimerswaal boasts impressive
dimensions. The dredger is 130 m long
and 22 m wide. With these dimensions
the trailing suction hopper dredger is the
largest vessel the Kooiman Group has ever
built. “We were aiming for a vessel with
countless possibilities”, explains Jos den
Herder, Captain of the Reimerswaal. “For
many years now we have specialised in
the excavation and delivery of sand and
gravel for the construction and concrete
industries. However, with the Reimerswaal
we can also excavate sand for coastal
protection and beach reclamation. We can
also supply gravel for windmill footings.
With this ship we are ready for the future.”
Sand and gravel excavation
However, first a comprehensive wish
list required fleshing out; for starters, a
long suction pipe. Den Herder explains
why: “Along the English coastline – the
Reimerswaal’s primary working area –
sand and gravel can be found up to 40
or 50 m down. The suction pipe had to
therefore be able to dredge at this depth
at the very least.” Sand and gravel are
sucked up through the pipe at full force
and then transported to the sieving system,
where the materials – if needed – can be
separated. A drain pump ensures that any
superfluous water is sucked out of the
hopper hold, after which the consignment
is ready for dry delivery. “The Reimerswaal
has two telescopic spud poles”, explains
Den Herder proudly. “With these we can
moor anywhere we choose, and the vessel
can be kept in position without hawsers.
With sufficient space we can even turn the
vessel whilst unloading. As soon as the final
grain has been deposited the Reimerswaal
is ready for the next trip.”
Rainbowing and Shoreline propulsion
If the sand is intended for coastal
protection or shoreline supplementation,
the consignment is deposited via the
bottom doors or bow coupling. If the sand
is intended for beach reclamation it can
be discharged via the bow coupling and
transported onto the shore. Den Herder:
“With the jet pump installation we can add
water to the hopper hold as needed. The
Reimerswaal can therefore rainbow, or in
other words, undertake ‘shore supply’ via
the pipe system and ‘dumping’ via the
bottom doors. This rainbowing can be
effected over a distance of 60 m. ‘Shore
supply’ can be effected over a distance of
two kilometres.”
Working safely and meticulously
But these do not exhaust the Reimerswaal’s
possibilities. With his vessel Den Herder
can also cater to the windmill market.
The intense forces to which windmills are
exposed necessitate extremely robust
footings. “The Reimerswaal can deposit
the gravel at the windmill via a conveyor
belt measuring 48 m”, explains Den Herder.
“That means a safer working environment.
The dynamic position system – in short
the ‘DP’ – ensures that the Reimerswaal
remains securely in position during works.
This results in more meticulous work.” And
that’s not forgetting the wheelhouse; the
domain where Jos den Herder has already
settled himself that is equipped with every
conceivable luxury. The wooden panelling
lends a certain ambience. The large
floor-to-ceiling windows offer generous
panoramic views over the vessel and
twelve screens ensure he can control all the
onboard equipment from a single position.
A nice place to stay
“In principal the Reimerswaal can be
operated singlehandedly. But we don’t
do that of course. There are thirteen
comfortable cabins, each with own shower
and toilet. With seven crew we can sail
24-7. In addition to which there is a deluxe
kitchen, bar, satellite TV and entertainment
room aplenty. The Reimerswaal is a nice
place to stay therefore. I haven’t sailed
for two years now, which has been far too
long. On the other hand it was fantastically
enthralling to be one of the family at the
Kooiman Group throughout the entire
construction process. They truly regard the
customer as King.”

offshore’, weet De Gelder (salesmanager)
bij het in Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht gevestigde
bedrijf.
Geweldig.”
Koedood leverde diverse motoren, zoals
de noodset, de scheeps generatorsets, de
generatorsets voor de laad- en losinstallatie
en de boegschroef. Na de levering volgde
de inbouwcontrole en zorgde men voor een
vlekkeloze inbedrijfstelling.
TrotsDe Gelder is enthousiast over het project. “Wij
zijn er vanaf het begin bij geweest. Voor ons is
een ode aan de goede samen werking
het een nieuwe tak. Voorheen zaten wij niet
in dit soort werk. Maar met Kooiman was
het fantastisch om te doen.” Desgevraagd
Kooiman.”
a tribute to excellent collaboration
In many countries relationship outstrips
knowledge. Those who have built up a good
network will notice business running more
smoothly and quickly. You not only connect
with one another but you are also involved
and feel responsible. It is these elements in
particular that Gertjan de Gelder is enthusiastic
about when he talks about the collaboration
with Kooiman.
Koedood is a distributor of Mitsubishi engines;
primarily for inland waterway and maritime
shipping. ‘This is increasingly expanding to
offshore’, states De Gelder (sales manager) at
the Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht located company.
This immediately links up nicely with the
Reimerswaal; hardly the standard hopper. “It’s
a very unique, balanced vessel, with a loading
and unloading system. Fantastic.”
Koedood supplies various engines, such
as the emergency and the ship’s generator
sets as well as the generator sets for the
loading and unloading equipment and the
bow thruster. Upon delivery they performed
installation check and then faultless
commissioning.
Proud
De Gelder enthuses about the project.”We
have been involved from the start. It’s a new
venture for us as we weren’t involved in this
type of work before. But it was fantastic to join
forces with Kooiman.” He comments further: “I
feel just as at home there as I do at Koedood.”
Bert den Herder, owner of the Reimerswaal, is
regarded similarly: “A true Kooiman customer.
Open and honest. Great to work with. All in all
making this a great project.”
De Gelder explains that as a supplier you are
truly involved, across the board: “It’s assessed
whether you fit in with the team. You can
really make your mark and, together with
the customer, can find the best, appropriate
solutions. We are proud as punch to include a
customer such as Kooiman in our portfolio.”
Kooiman.

Wie spreekt over water, hydraulische
Want waarom dure materialen
inzetten als het met minder evengoed
kan? Die visie heet ‘maatwerk leveren en
klantgericht meedenken.’ Aan boord van
de Reimerswaal maakte Hydromarine dat
meer dan waar…
Hydromarine-directeur Wim Zegelaar:
“Meedenken vinden wij vanzelfsprekend.
Advies en oplossingen aandragen is zeker
met de techniek van vandaag van vitaal
belang. Onze bijdrage aan dit project
was dan ook een heel speciale.” Die
bijzondere rol is allereerst terug te voeren
op de jarenlange relatie met Kooiman voor
wie het Papendrechtse bedrijf veel werk
verzette.
behappen. Dit project was zó groot. Toen
de offertes binnenkwamen vroeg men aan
ons: ‘Kijk er eens naar. Gaat het goed
zo?’
overleg. Althans dát wilde hij. Zegelaar
lachend: “Dat ging niet zomaar. Kooiman
wilde graag dat wij vanuit onze ideeën
het karwei gingen uitvoeren. Daar is over
gesproken en er werden goede afspraken
gemaakt.
Hydromarine.”
Het Papendrechtse bedrijf leverde
uiteindelijk dertien hydrauliekinstallaties,
stuk voor stuk geslaagde deelprojecten in
het grote - indrukwekkende - concept dat
Reimerswaal heet…
People discussing water, hydraulic
systems and components quickly
come up with the name Hydromarine
Papendrecht B.V; a firm that truly matches
its customers’ needs. Why source
expensive materials when it can be done
just as well for less? This vision is known
as ‘customised service and proactive,
customer-focused thinking’. Hydromarine
demonstrated that superbly aboard the
Reimerswaal.
Hydromarine director Wim Zegelaar: “We
regard proactive thinking as a matter of
course. Providing advice and solutions
is vitally important, especially with the
technologies available today. As such our
contribution towards this project was very
special.” That special role can firstly be
traced back to the established relationship
with Kooiman, for whom the Papendrecht
based company has done much work.
The Reimerswaal project had been up
and running for a while and Kooiman had
placed hydraulic quotes with a number
of ‘larger’ companies. That was, for
that matter, upon the recommendation
of Zegelaar: “You wouldn’t ask a local
firm to construct the Betuwe line, rather,
you’d ask a firm that can handle it. That’s
how big this project was. Once the
quotes started coming in we were asked:
‘have a look at it. Is that the way?’ We
subsequently ascertained that a number of
issues didn’t add up.”
Plans
Discussions with involved parties ensued
and at a certain point the figurative die
was cast and the existing plans were
scrapped. At this point Zegelaar deemed
his role as complete and absented himself
from the discussions. At any rate, so he
would have preferred. Zegelaar smilingly
continues: “That couldn’t happen just like
that. Kooiman wished us to implement
our ideas. This was discussed and proper
arrangements were made. Throughout
the project duration I worked more
for the Kooiman Group than I did for
Hydromarine.”
The Papendrecht based firm ultimately
supplied thirteen hydraulic installations,
each and every one comprising successful
sub-projects within the extensive – and
impressive – project known as the

Groep.
Projects – whatever their size – are carried out by a Kooiman Group

Reimerswaal he was already a familiar face within the Kooiman
Group. During previous maintenance and alteration assignments a
close relationship developed between him and the Kooiman Group.
His wish was for his brainchild – the Reimerswaal – to also be built
here. But the know-how within the Group as well as the financial
possibilities also played their part too. Discussions with Marc de Roo
of the Kooiman Group made him see the vessel develop.
“For twelve months Den Herder and Marc de Roo brainstormed
about the Reimerswaal,” explains Peter Vrolijk of the Kooiman
design agency. “Gradually, step by step a real plan came to fruition.
It soon became clear how big the engines had to be, how robust the
construction had to be and how attuned the systems had to be with
one another. After this we could fix a price. Unfortunately the timing
wasn’t exactly favourable. It was precisely at this moment that the
banks were holding tightly onto the purse strings. But one year on it
was a different story, when Den Helder definitively placed the order
with us.”

Maarten Boone gaat
over de piping-, brandstof-, koelwater- en andere systemen. Maarten
bijzonder.
The project team
At this stage the Kooiman Group followed its fixed processes.
The team that boasted the best in-house qualities to achieve Bert
Den Helder’s contract was decided upon. Marc van Dijk drew the
drawings. Jos Blom was in charge of finances and large procurement
issues such as the engines and hull. Peter Vrolijk was responsible
for the shipbuilding component and the dredging equipment. Chiel
Verhoef was charged with coordinating the entire accommodation.
Maarten Boone handled the piping, fuel, cooling water and other
systems. Maarten Pruijsen arranged construction supervision
in Romania. Arie van Duyvendijk was put in charge of the deck
equipment. Jan Boon organised the hydraulic pipe work and Arjan van
de Zegen de Beer took care of the outfitting stages.
Horizontal organisation
“Projects within the Kooiman Groep aren’t therefore controlled by
an overall project leader,” explains Vrolijk. “And that’s quite unique.
Everyone personally follows development and keeps an eye on when
their share is required.” Similar to the project team, the customer also
remains involved with construction progress. They are present at nigh
on every consultation and think along proactively to find solutions.
As such the Kooiman Group is a strikingly horizontal organisation,
especially in view of the staff numbers. Meetings are held in the
corridors and at the coffee table. But the benefits are clear to see:
everyone within the project team is up to speed.
‘each team member has their moment of stress’.

Moments of stress
Maarten Pruijsen, in charge of the hull construction, headed out to
Romania every other week whilst the hull was being built. He has
experience with international construction and maintained yard
supervision along with two Romanians. He monitored the welding
and paint works as well as the scheduling. Towards the end of 2011
the hull was ready to be transported to the Netherlands, where the
finishing stages started. Vrolijk: “Actually, everyone has their own
moments of stress. But you can always rely on the team.” There were
real moments of stress for Arjan van de Zegen de Beer who ensured
that all elements were placed on board with as few hoisting works as
possible.
“A lot of money can be saved through intelligent scheduling”, explains
Van de Zegen de Beer. “Most certainly when it concerns costly
hoisting time. As a result delivery times and quality both became my
responsibility. It’s been the biggest project I’ve ever been part of. It
was fantastic to be involved in it.”

The Reimerswaal is equipped with a dredge pipe with a integrated
1,800 kW electrically powered submersible pump, driven by a diesel
generator set rated at 2,650 kW. The same diesel engine drives a
dredge pump for wet discharging to shore. Two gensets, rated at
1,428 kVA, have a PTO to drive the jet pumps, which provide jet water
to stir the bottom at the draghead and to liquidify the cargo for wet
discharging. A third identical genset is used exclusively for electrical
power. The bowthruster is driven by a 1,360 kW diesel engine.
While the forward engine room is dedicated to all dredge-related
activities as well as housing an auxiliary generator (475 kW), the
aft engine room houses the typical ship machinery, such as the
propulsion engines (two of 2,720 kW), the second auxiliary generator
(475 kW) and all the auxiliary equipment.

Brief descriptiOn The Reimerswaal is equipped with a dynamic positioning system,
allowing her to dredge extremely accurately when combining the DP
system with a track pilot.
The dredge production comes onboard through the dredge pipe and
then passes through a sieve, which discharges undesired material
overboard. The desired granulate is deposited into a discharge pipe
above the hopper. The excess water discharged through hatches in
the hopper coaming, which can be closed hydraulically. Water can be
extracted from the hopper through perforated pipes located under a
grille at the bottom of the hopper.
The bucket wheel unloader allows to unload the entire hopper to
shore in only two hours. The ten-metre wide bucketwheel, is moved
fore-aft on a trolley over rails and then lowered a bit after each fore-
aft pass. The bucketwheel discharges onto a hydraulically driven
conveyor belt system, ending with a 46 metre long shore belt.
The Reimerswaal is further equipped with bottom discharge doors,
a rainbowing nozzle, a bow coupling for discharge via a floating
pipeline, a side connection for discharging over the side and jet
pumps to liquidify the cargo. In addition to multiple fixed jet nozzles in
the hopper bottom, two large remote-controlled jet water monitors are
installed.

multi-command stoel zullen elke baggeraar
jaloers maken.”
camera’s“Het camerasysteem van de Reimerswaal
is opvallend uitgebreid”, vertelt Koster.
“Met dertien camera’s, waaronder twee
zoomcamera’s in de voormast en twee in de
achtermast, kan de kapitein vanaf de brug
alles in de gaten houden. Het systeem is
bovendien met een glasvezelkabel gekoppeld
aan het computernetwerk. De beelden kunnen
dus via elke computer worden opgeroepen.
Dit maakt het systeem uiterst flexibel.
Daarnaast kunnen de camera’s op afstand
worden bestuurd. De beelden kunnen op elk
moment worden teruggekeken.”
In positieHet DP-systeem kan het schip zonder
mensenhanden in positie houden, maar ook
besturen over een vooraf ingestelde lijn. “Dat
maakt het schip eenvoudig bestuurbaar.
Daarnaast is het systeem uitgevoerd met de
speciale ‘dredging-optie’.
varen. Daarnaast heeft het schip een aparte
kaartplotter voor het baggeren. En ten slotte
is daar nog de multi-command stoel: “Hierin
zijn de belangrijkste functies geïntegreerd: een
ingebouwd touchscreenpanel, twee 15-inch
bijna Koninklijke allure.”
equipment - Royal allure
The Reimerswaal isn’t just any kind of
dredger. It is without question the Rolls-
Royce of dredgers. The vessel is equipped
with state-of-the-art navigation and
communication gadgetry.
Arjan Koster from Alphatron Marine kicks off
with: “each and every piece of equipment
aboard the Reimerswaal is above-average”.
“To start with, the presence of three radars,
where the average vessel has two. But also
the camera network, DP system and the multi
command chair will be the envy of all other
dredgers.
Cameras
“The camera system on the Reimerswaal is
striking in size”, tells Koster. “With thirteen
cameras, including two zoom cameras in the
fore mast and two in the aft mast, the Captain
can keep a watchful eye on everything from
the bridge. Moreover, the fibreglass cable
system is linked to the computer network.
This means the images can be seen on each
computer. This makes the system highly
flexible. In addition to which the cameras can
be remotely operated. The images can be
recalled at any given time.”
In position
The DP system can maintain the vessel’s
position on autopilot, but can also navigate
a predetermined route. “That makes the
ship easy to steer. In addition, the system is
equipped with a special ‘dredging option’.
The suction pipe mouth stays in position
(as opposed to the ship), and maintains a
steady predetermined course. The system
continuously corrects the course and speed
of the vessel as well as keeping the angle of
the suction pipe to the optimum.”
Command chair
Also noteworthy is the double ‘ECDIS’,
which allows the vessel to sail paper-free.
In addition the ship boasts a separate chart
plotter for dredging. And finally, there’s the
multi-command chair: “It’s here that the most
important functions are integrated: an inbuilt
touch screen panel, two 15 inch displays
with adjustable settings, a DP control unit
with joystick, the autopilot with joysticks
and the engine controls. Using three pedals
the Captain can operate (maritime) mobile
radio telephones. And if that wasn’t enough;
the chair is lovely in design as well as being
immensely comfortable. It couldn’t be more
custom-made, upholstered in leather, with the
company logo. This all amounts to technology
with nigh on Royal allure.”

diverse soorten lieren. Men ontwikkelt en
standaard. Kees Kraaijeveld (directeur)
vertelt: “Behalve lieren in diverse
uitvoeringen en functies verzorgen wij ook
hydraulische aandrijvingen. Daarnaast
leveren wij toebehoren, machineonderdelen
op maat en op verzoek speciale producten.”
ervaringHet bedrijf aan de Industrieweg maakt
voor de baggerindustrie ankerlieren,
spudlieren, zuigbuislieren, ladderlieren,
ankerbehandelingslieren, verhaallieren
Reimerswaal. Inmiddels kan gezegd worden
dat dit tot wederzijdse tevredenheid was.
Kraaijeveld produceerde voor de
hopperzuiger de ankerlier en de verhaallier.
Maar ook de lieren voor de spudpalen,
de zuigbuis en de boeg koppeling. Negen
in totaal.
gebruikt.”
Winches from sliedrecht:
diverse and reliable
Towing winches, anchor winches, and
winches for dredging works; winches
for among other things: container ships,
tankers, floating derricks, tugboats and
hopper dredgers. That’s the core business
of Machine- en Lierenfabriek Kraaijeveld.
As such, the construction of winches and
their positioning on the Reimerswaal was
a project that linked up seamlessly with
the craftsmanship of this Sliedrecht based
company. First and foremost it was “a fun,
sizeable project.”
Kraaijeveld has been active within the
maritime market, and related sectors,
since 1927. Ever since the second half of
the previous century the emphasis has
rested on the production of a range of
winch types. These are designed and made
for customers that nearly all undertake
international operations. The size and
specification prerequisites imposed on the
winches are becoming increasingly complex.
Customisation is therefore the preferred
format. Kees Kraaijeveld (director) explains:
“Aside from winches in various formats and
functions, we also supply hydraulic drives.
In addition to which we supply accessories,
customised machine parts and specialised
products upon request.”
Experience
The firm, located along the Industrieweg,
constructs anchor winches, spud winches,
suction pipe winches, ladder winches, anchor
windlasses, mooring winches and constant
tensioning winches for the dredging industry.
It was primarily the many years of experience
and the proven quality of their winches that
prompted the Kooiman Group to engage
Machine- en Lierenfabriek Kraaijeveld for the
finishing stages of the BNR 193 Reimerswaal
project. It can in the meantime be said that the
project was completed to mutual satisfaction.
Kraaijeveld produced the anchor winch and
mooring winch for the hopper dredger, in
addition to the winches for the spud poles
,suction pipe and bow coupling. Nine in all.
“They comprise sound designs. Aesthetically
pleasing,” explains the director. “It is a
solid concept that guarantees problem-free
functioning for many years to come. The
winches will, after all, be intensively used.”

Jan de Waart (New Construction Manager)

Meerwaarde kon men ook
scope opgesteld (‘Wat gaan we doen’ –
red.) en de tekeningen gekeurd. Aan de
hand daarvan gaat onze buitendienst de
inspecties uitvoeren of alles ook werkelijk
op de aangegeven manier gebeurt. Maar
ook in Roemenie, waar het casco werd
gebouwd, hebben wij mensen zitten. Ik
ben daar geweest om de overdracht naar
Nederland goed te laten verlopen.”
De Waart vond de Reimerswaal een
prachtige klus, omdat het een bijzondere
hopper is. “Ik heb er al veel gezien.
Maar dit concept met graafwiel, de
zand- en ontwateringsinstallaties en de
mogelijkheid tot self unloading is heel
apart. Ik vond het mooi om daaraan mee
te werken.”

hopper dredger for classification at Bureau Veritas Marine – who assessed the hull, steel constructions, machinery and automation in accordance with applicable stipulations and guidelines – was an easy one. Issues pertaining to quality, welfare, safety and the environment were likewise included. Added value could also be contributed to the actual project management, by taking care of procurement and certification components for example.
Splendid job
In his role as surveyor De Waart was involved in the project from the very outset. “During the tender process we formulated the scope (‘what we are going to do’ - red.) and approved the drawings. External staff then undertook inspections to assess whether everything would actually proceed as indicated. However, we also had people in situ in Romania where the hull was built. I went there to oversee the smooth transfer to the Netherlands.”De Waart thought the Reimerswaal to be a splendid job, as it’s an exceptional hopper. “I’ve come across many, however, this concept with rotary wheel trencher, and the sand and drainage equipment, and the option for self unloading is highly unique. I enjoyed working on it”.

Reimerswaal | 37
De ‘specialismen’ waar Rinus Kooiman,
directeur van de Kooiman Groep, op
doelt, lopen inderdaad behoorlijk uiteen.
Zo is het ontwerpbureau van de Kooiman
Groep gespecialiseerd in het ontwerp van
vrachtschepen, baggerschepen, veerponten,
kraanschepen, duwboten, sleepboten en
eigen installaties als scheepshellingen. “Dit
bureau is uitgerust met state-of-the-art
ontwerpprogramma’s”, vertelt Kooiman. “Hier
worden de krabbels en schetsen uitgewerkt
tot zichtbare en maakbare ontwerpen. Zodra
Scheepswerf Gebr. Kooiman. Hier zitten
de bouwspecialisten. Zij weten hoe ze het
ontwerp kunnen realiseren. De onderlinge
band is heel vriendschappelijk.
“Nagenoeg
alle onderdelen hadden we in het verleden
al eens gemaakt. En ook de relatie met de
opdrachtgever was goed.
neerleggen. Hierdoor ontstond een redelijk
unieke situatie. Door de complexiteit van de
opdracht zijn bijna alle Kooiman-bedrijven
betrokken geweest bij de bouw van de
Reimerswaal.”
synergieHet ontwerp kwam op tafel binnen het
ontwerpbureau. Dit bureau bestaat uit zo’n
zestien man, waarbij ongeveer de helft het
ontwerp van de Reimerswaal heeft uitgewerkt,
soms nog ondersteund door ontwerpers van
buitenaf. “In die gevallen houdt het eigen
ontwerpbureau wel de regie”, licht Kooiman
toe.
doen.
50% zal stijgen. De bedrijven Van Duijvendijk
en Van Eijk zijn volledig geïntegreerd
binnen de Kooiman Groep. We hebben
deze bedrijven ooit overgenomen en om
commerciële redenen opereren ze ook onder
hun eigen naam. Maar achter de schermen
is daar niets meer van te merken. Van
Duijvendijk is gespecialiseerd in bijzondere
binnenvaartschepen en Van Eijk is een begrip
in haveninrichting.”
van os YersekeVan Os Yerseke is sterk in reparatie, revisie
en conversie. Het bedrijf ligt in Yerseke en
draait als een tierelier. Jaarlijks meren er zo’n
200 schepen aan. Door het jarenlange brede
aanbod van visserijschepen is het bedrijf
ondertussen van alle markten thuis. Het relatief
jonge team herstelt ijzerwerk, leidingwerk,
mechanische onderdelen en schilderwerk,
maar ook hydrauliek en elektra. Daarnaast
groeien.”

Kooiman group:
eight companies to tackle any
problem that may arise
The construction of a ship such as the
Reimerswaal demands considerable
know-how. That said, only exceptionally
challenging criteria cannot be realised
by Kooiman Group. “We simply have
everything we need in-house,” explains
Rinus Kooiman. “The Kooiman Group
comprises eight companies, each boasting
their own area of expertise. And all these
companies are closely interlinked; together
they can tackle any potential problem.”
The areas of expertise Rinus Kooiman, director of the Kooiman Group highlights, are considerable indeed. As such the Kooiman Group design agency specialises in designing freight ships, dredgers, ferry boats, crane ships, push tugs, tug boats and in-house necessities such as slipways. “This agency is equipped with state-of-the-art design programmes”, tells Kooiman. “Here the scribbles and sketches are formulated into clear-cut, feasible designs. As soon as this stage is reached the design heads over to the Kooiman Bros shipyard where the construction specialists are at work. They know how to bring the design to life. The working relationship is very amiable. All the companies support one another, work hand in hand and scratch each other’s backs.”
Large and Complex
Indeed, within the Kooiman Group the missing link cannot be found. It boasts everything it needs to build a ship in-house. From steel construction and mechanical engineering to piping, panelling and electrical engineering. “In principle therefore, the construction of the Reimerswaal was in good hands,” explains Kooiman. “We had made pretty much all the components at one time or another. And the relationship with the customer was also good. We had built
various loading and unloading installations for them before, and had raised decks for them too. But this time it concerned a large, complex ship, whereas the Kooiman Group usually deals in smaller vessels. Despite that Bert Den Herder wanted to give us the job. This brought about a somewhat unique situation. Due to the complexity of the assignment nearly all the Kooiman companies were involved in the construction of the Reimerswaal.”
Synergy
The blueprint landed on the design agency’s table. The agency comprises around sixteen people, with around half of the team having formulated the design of the Reimerswaal; supported now and again by externals. “In those instances the commissioned design agency is in charge,” explains Kooiman. “And it can’t just involve any designer. In a project such as this it’s all about designers who strive for more knowledge and who are willing to exceed their own limitations. They must of course also be willing to cooperate. It’s only when everyone is prepared to work closely together that synergy can truly occur. Luckily everyone in the Kooiman Group appreciated this.”
Hoebee
“That enticement to cooperate is reflected in the office layout,” states Kooiman. “The large windows encourage contact with people in neighbouring offices. Hoebee – that specialises in ship maintenance - may be a little further away but contact with this firm is likewise close. The slipway – recently extended to 150 m and widened to 24 m – was designed by the Kooiman design agency for example. It’s fantastic to see how Hoebee is attracting bigger assignments because of the bigger slipway. The bigger projects sometimes necessitate contracting additional people, but the know-how remains ever present within the company.”
‘Within the kooiman group one and all sings off the same hymn sheet’
Mous, Van Duijvendijk and Van Eijk
And to touch upon the Reimerswaal again: “As a rule, Technisch Bureau Mous takes care of the electrical installations on board the Kooiman Group vessels. However, for the Reimerswaal t they were somewhat on the small side, as a result of which they were only involved on the sidelines this time round. That said, Mous is shooting up. The expectation is that staff numbers will rise this year by 40 to 50%. The Van Duijvendijk and Van Eijk firms are fully integrated within the Kooiman Group. At one time or another we took over these companies and for commercial reasons they have operated under their own names. However, behind the scenes this is hardly discernible. Van Duijvendijk specialises in unique inland waterway vessels and Van Eijk is renowned for harbour facilities.”
Van Os Yerseke
Van Os Yerseke is known for repairs, revision and conversion. The company is located in Yerseke and is all hustle and bustle. Annually around 200 ships moor here. Due to the well-established, extensive range of fishing vessels that are worked on, the company now feels at home in all kinds of markets. The relatively young team repairs iron work, pipe work, mechanical components and paint work, in addition to hydraulics and electrics. Moreover, we see that the numbers far exceeded just fishing vessels quite some time ago. An increasingly varied range of ships are mooring up at Van Os Yerseke for a maintenance service. “That’s a real result for Van Os Yerseke. This makes them less season dependant and allows for more stable growth.”“Within the Kooiman Group one and all sings off the same hymn sheet. If help is needed everyone first assesses whether this help can be found within the club. This means the chances of the Kooiman Group not being able to help someone out are very small indeed,” declares Rinus Kooiman.
