Dear Friends,
Welcome to the 36th ÒDouble ChaiÓ Anniversary Season of The Gershman YÕs Philadelphia
Jewish Film Festival!
This fall, we are thrilled to bring you 33 films from 12 countries around the world. Over the
course of the Festival, you will have an opportunity to see 16 feature documentaries, nine
narrative feature films, and eight short films, all selected after a year-long search by our
extraordinary Screening Committee. These films may delight, horrify, enrich, frustrate,
sadden, edify, intrigue, calm, or excite you. . .but whatever they do, they are certain to fulfill
our mission of celebrating Jewish identity, culture, history and community through the
medium of film. We are so happy to be able to share them with you this fall!
This year, weÕll take you on quite a ride Ñ you will join our film subjects as they engage in
many aspects of the human experience: they will fight for human rights, tell edgy jokes,
celebrate their Bar Mitzvah, sit shiva, fear deportation, solve murders, deny the Holocaust,
hang their art in museums, direct movies, break with tradition, lift weights, discover their
fatherÕs identity, prove they are Jewish, and much more. Thank you for coming along on
this film adventure with us.
As you may know, the PJFF is one of the largest Jewish Film Festivals in the United States;
it is among over 100 of its kind in the nation. Philadelphia is so fortunate to have Olivia
Antsis as PJFF Director; under her leadership, the Festival has grown by leaps and bounds
and has transformed simple film screenings into true community events. Working hand-
in-hand with Olivia is the indefatigable Artistic Chair of the PJFF, Iris Drechsler. Together,
they work to assure that our fabulous Screening Committee reviews the finest films from
throughout the world and selects the ones that best suit our Philadelphia audience.
Many thanks to the wonderful supportive staff of The Gershman Y, led by our dedicated
Executive Director Maxine Gaiber, and Associate Director Kristen Evans, and our many
volunteers, including our committed PJFF Committee, who make this Festival possible.
A special thanks to all of our Sponsors, Supporters, Advertisers, and Donors who
contribute the funds to lease the movies and theaters; to bring incredible actors, directors,
producers, and experts to accompany the films; and to allow students to see the films free
of charge.
Last but not least, I can never forget to acknowledge and thank our PJFF Co-Founders,
Judy Golden and the late Archie Perlmutter, for creating this Festival for all of us to enjoy.
See you at the movies,
Phyllis

Getting stoned and playing air guitar with your next
door neighborsÕ twenty-something son are two
activities not commonly associated with the Jewish
mourning period. Yet for Eyal and Vicky, anything
goes. As nothing makes sense after the death of
oneÕs own child, Eyal finds himself grasping for
whatever will distract him from returning to the real
world, while Vicky remains focused on the path set
before her: getting in her morning jog, making sure
her students take their pop quiz, and showing up to
a long scheduled dental appointment.
Without resorting to sentimentality or melodrama,
Polonsky expertly crafts a tender and honest
portrait of what it means to navigate the absurdity
of life after death. ONE WEEK AND A DAY is a
stellar debut from a promising new talent.

Ever since arriving in Israel from Ethiopia five years
ago, Mussa, a refugee kid as fluent in Hebrew as
his native classmates, has refused to speak. Living
in one of Tel AvivÕs poorest neighborhoods, Mussa
is bussed to one of the cityÕs best private schools,
where he studies with a diverse mix of students Ñ
from other refugees like himself to children from
exceptionally wealthy families. Yet despite all of the
great friends heÕs made in school and the special
bond he shares with his favorite teacher and her
son, Mussa still chooses to communicate through
facial expressions and gestures alone.
With IsraelÕs overstretched refugee policy, Mussa
has always understood that he and his family could
be deported at any time. His precarious existence
in the country he wishes to call home is fraught
with anxiety. It has become even more strained, in
light of learning that one of his fellow classmates
is being sent back to Sudan. What develops in
this eye-opening and heartrending documentary
is a social commentary on the status of African
refugees in Israel and the struggles they must face
on a daily basis in order to survive.

Having spent a lifetime concealing his heritage, an
aging German Holocaust survivor must prove his
Jewish identity in THE LAST MENTSCH.
Born Menachem Teitelbaum, Marcus Schwarz
(German Academy Award winner Mario
Adorf) escaped Auschwitz with his life only to
exterminate his Jewishness. Without family,
a synagogue, or a single Jewish friend, the
hardened old man has so effectively created a
new identity that the rabbis refuse his appeal
to be buried in a Jewish cemetery when he
dies. Determined to return to his birthplace and
establish his ancestry, Marcus enlists the help
of a brash, chain-smoking Turkish woman with
a troubled history of her own. The unlikely duo
set out on a road trip to a small village on the
Hungarian-Romanian border, a journey that will
irrevocably change them both.
Packed with powerful performances, director
Pierre-Henry SalfatiÕs emotional narrative
of friendship and healing explores the cost
of forgetting oneÕs past and the power in its
reclamation.

Teodor Szacki (Polish Academy Award-winning
actor Robert Wieckiewicz), once a star prosecutor
in Warsaw, leaves his career and marriage behind
to start life anew in a sleepy tourist town in
southeastern Poland. Not long after arriving in
Sandomierz, Teodor discovers that his new home
has a centuries-old history of anti-Semitic atrocities.
Seen as an outsider by the townÕs close-knit
community, even Teodor faces suspicion when
tasked to get to the bottom of the brutal murder of
a well-known social activist, whose nude mutilated
body was found outside a former synagogue. As
the trail of victims grows, and the killer remains
elusive, clues lead Teodor down a forensic
wormhole connecting the ghastly murders to
historic myths of blood libel. Aided by a veteran
police detective (Jerzy Trela), a reluctant female
prosecutor (Magdalena Walach), and a local rabbi
(Zohar Strauss), Teodor must solve the mystifying
case before public and media hysteria undo all
the progress the country has made in shedding its
xenophobic past.

Nathan Fabre teaches in a French-German
school while working on his thesis about French
resistance to the Nazis during World War II. During
a research trip to Buchenwald, he discovers a
photograph of a concentration camp prisoner
who strikingly resembles his own father. Back in
France, still haunted by the image, Nathan looks to
his father for answers but is met with impenetrable
silence. Committed to learning the truth, Nathan
pursues the matter himself by digging deep into
his family history, meanwhile complicating his
relationship with a young German woman whose
family history is similarly murky.
By interviewing curators of the Holocaust
memorial, tracking down survivors who may
have known the man in the photograph, and
confronting all of his living relatives, Nathan pieces
together secrets that have been kept hidden for
more than 60 years.

By his mid-twenties, Csand Szegedi, a fervent Holocaust denier and outspoken anti-Semite,
rises up through the ranks to lead the Hungarian far-right conservative Jobbik Party. Co-
founder of the Hungarian Guard and serving his country in the European Parliament, Szegedi,
with his extremist views and racist agenda, ascends the political ladder. That is, until the day
a rung gives out and Szegedi comes tumbling down.
Discovering that his grandmother is a survivor of Auschwitz and he is, indeed, a Jew, Szegedi
has no choice but to come to terms with his true identity. After the initial shock subsides and
members of his own party begin to turn against him, Szegedi, desperate and alone, seeks
the help of a local Orthodox rabbi. Agreeing to take Szegedi under his wing despite protests
from his peers, the empathetic rabbi aids Szegedi in his unbelievable transformation from

Since the early days of television, Jerry Lewis has had audiences laughing at his visual gags, pantomime sketches, and signature slapstick humor. Yet Lewis was far more than a jokester. A groundbreaking filmmaker whose insatiable curiosity led him to write, produce, stage, and direct many of the films he would also appear in resulted in such adored classics as The Bellboy,
The Ladies Man, The Errand Boy, and The Nutty Professor.
LewisÕs filmmaking career prevented him from
being pigeonholed as a comic performer and
launched his reputation as a driving force in
Hollywood. Pushing boundaries with his technical
innovations, unique voice, and keen visual eye,
he soon garnered praise overseas, particularly in
France among the cultural sophisticates.
While some Americans viewed Lewis as nothing
more than an abrasive clown, Europeans
recognized him as a true Òauteur.Ó So just who is
Jerry Lewis? Is he just another brash, attention-
hungry buffoon? Or is he a creative genius?
In celebration of Jerry LewisÕs 90th birthday and
his new picture on the way, Jerry Lewis and his
friends candidly reflect on LewisÕs remarkable
life and decades-long career. From his legendary
partnership with crooner Dean Martin and his
incredible rise to Beatles-like fame, to his great
love affair with the other side of the movie camera,
director Gregory Monro invites audiences to
rediscover Jerry Lewis as an influential artist,
humanitarian, and visionaryÑthe man behind the clown.

This moving short film chronicles the life of
photographer Yasha (Jack) Pashkovsky, from his
humble beginnings as a Jewish-Russian immigrant

may have been the greatest collection of celebrity

From escaping Nazi Germany via the
Kindertransport at the age of three and reuniting
with her family only to lose her mother to suicide at
age 10, to her notable influence on the downtown
New York art scene as a young artist in the 1960s,
Eva HesseÕs world had been nothing short of
extraordinary. The brilliant and beautiful painter-
turned-sculptor created dynamic works of art
informed by abstract expressionism, minimalism,
and commercial design practices.
Incorporating industrial and every-day materials
like rubber, wire, latex, and fiberglass into her
sculptures, Eva redefined her medium and left an
enduring mark on the art world. Though her career
thrived, Eva still struggled with relationship issues
and the double standards imposed on female artists
in the art world. All too soon, EvaÕs health began to
deteriorate, and she was diagnosed with terminal
cancer.
Based on EvaÕs personal diaries, which she kept
religiously until her death at 34, this poetic and
evocative film illuminates why Eva is celebrated as
one of the most important and influential artists of
the twentieth century.

Allies in both England and the United States, and
ultimately supplied substantial proof early on that
Polish Jews were being exterminated en masse.
In KARSKI & THE LORDS OF HUMANITY, Karski

As a debonair trained diplomat with a worldly air about him, Jan Karski looked forward to a
promising future in the Polish military. Unfortunately, his professional ambitions were cut short
when Germany invaded his home country in 1939. Captured by the Red Army and transported
to a labor camp in the Soviet Union, his life took an unprecedented turn.

Can humor be found in the darkest of places? For comedians, the Holocaust has often been
considered a ÒtabooÓ subject, a no manÕs land
for jokes Ñ a place you donÕt want to go as an
entertainer. In THE LAST LAUGH, a filmmaker
sets out to challenge this assumption and find out
if joking about the Holocaust and other human
atrocities is ever acceptable.
Juxtaposing clips from films, performances, and
interviews with top comedians and prominent
Jewish leaders (including Mel Brooks, Sarah
Silverman, Joan Rivers, Louis C.K., Susie Essman,
Judy Gold, Abraham Foxman, and Shalom
Auslander) with an intimate profile of Auschwitz
survivor Renee Firestone (as well as other
survivors), Director Ferne Pearlstein weaves
together a poignant and in-depth exploration into
what is and is not off-limits in comedy.
A powerful documentary about a controversial
subject, THE LAST LAUGH in no way undermines
the horrors of the Holocaust, yet it still succeeds in
putting a smile on your face. After all, what can be
more heartening than witnessing the resiliency of
the human spirit in the face of tragedy?

In THE LAST BLINTZ, the imminent closing of a historic cafe in New York CityÕs theater
district compels its loyal clientele to create a petition to save it.
Historic Cafe Edison, located in the former ballroom of Hotel Edison on West 47th Street,
has been a culinary staple in NYCÕs Theater District for the past 32 years. When the original
owners of the cafe and hotel (both Holocaust survivors) made a pact to keep Cafe Edison
open as long as the Strohl family was willing to run it, their handshake meant their word.
Now, with gentrification, and the value of Times Square real estate mounting, the current
owners of Hotel Edison are prepared to trade in their beloved neighborhood cafe for an
upscale, five-star restaurant.
Official Selection at AFI Docs, THE LAST BLINTZ offers an emotional look at one of the last
vestiges of old New York, while examining the cultural and social implications of relinquishing
AmericaÕs cultural and historic markers.

During the 1920s, Caf Nagler was one of the
hottest cafs in all of Berlin. Celebrities the likes
of Albert Einstein, Franz Kafka, and Bertolt Brecht
frequented Nagler for afternoon tea and intelligent
conversation Ñ or did they?
Israeli director Mor Kaplansky channels the
cinematic roots of her acclaimed documentarian
grandmother, Naomi Kaplansky, to create a film
that tackles the unanswered questions of a nearly
century-old family legend. In hopes of making a
documentary that will satisfy her grandmotherÕs
sentimental yearning for a past long gone, Kaplinsky
sets out to Moritzplatz, Berlin, the home of NaomiÕs
beloved childhood caf. Learning that the real Caf
Nagler paled in comparison to her grandmotherÕs
glamorous recollections, Mor commits to recreating
the myth that was so integral to NaomiÕs identity. With
the help of some imaginative Berliners, she constructs
a documentary that illuminates the many ways
memory, myth, and storytelling make us who we are.

a Òmarch of death.Ó Dr. Horner describes how the Nazis literally broke his back, ending his

her powerlifting father, Naomi has broken world
records in this testosterone-fueled sport since the
age of eight, astonishing spectators and lifters

Naomi is faced with new challenges like navigating

In another time and place, Shimek and Buzya
would be together, but, in their archaic shtetl, any
demonstration of affection is restrained by the
village's orthodox customs. It is only after fate
sends Shimek away from his village that he realizes
the true depth of his feelings for Buzya. When
he finally returns, it will be a homecoming with a
palette tinted grey with regret but redeemed by
faith that the old world can be born anew.

nurtured by tradition, the elf-like Shimek (Yevheniy Kogan) endearingly acquiesces to his
conservative parents' rearing. However, neither ShimekÕs parents nor his school's stern rabbi
are able to deflate this precocious childÕs uncanny imagination. Cultivating a friendship with
local girl Buzya (Milena Tsibulskaya), Shimek finds himself more than a confidant Ñ he finds a

For Evan Wolfson, it has always been about
standing on the right side of history. Having
begun advocating for LGBT rights at Harvard Law
School, where he wrote his thesis on the subject
of marriage equality, Wolfson has devoted his
entire career to serving the LGBT community and
its collective aspiration to legally wed. In 2003, he
created the Freedom to Marry Foundation, where
he and his team of activist pioneers have spent
over a decade fighting to eradicate the traditional
model for marital union state by state.
In this profoundly moving film, Director Eddie
Rosenstein traces the history of the marriage
equality movement to the peak moment when

A refugee boat docks in the harbor of Malm,
Sweden, on April 28, 1945. Swedish newspaper
photographers are on the scene to document the
influx of its diverse group of German concentration
camp survivors. The faces among the crowd belong
to Jewish refugees from all over Europe, Polish
mothers and children, Norwegian prisoners of war,
members of the French resistance, British spies,
and, perhaps the most unique among them, an
Italian-American who was visiting her grandparents
in Italy when the Nazis mistook her for an
espionage agent and deported her to Auschwitz.
In EVERY FACE HAS A NAME, director Magnus
Gertten tracks down many of the previously
anonymous individuals featured in Gustaf Boge
ClaredioÕs black-and-white film reel (originally shot
for broadcast on Swedish National Television) and
asks them to discover themselves anew via the
archival footage captured of their extraordinary
entry to Sweden. Their profound recollections of
being ferried to liberation are not only miraculous
and moving, but offer a poignant window into the
experiences of current refugees seeking asylum
in Europe and around the world. This fascinating
documentary, which was awarded the Church of

war evacuees from Africa and the Middle East to
remind us of our collective responsibility towards

In GRAND HOTEL, Doctor Otternschlag (Lewis
Stone), a disfigured veteran of World War I and
permanent resident of the most lavish sleeping
quarters in all of Berlin, wryly observes: ÒPeople
coming, going. Nothing ever happens.Ó Of course,
a great deal transpires in this engrossing romantic
drama starring Hollywood legends John Barrymore,
Joan Crawford, and Greta Garbo.
Baron Felix von Gaigern (John Barrymore), a
handsome thief and gambler, is romancing one
of his marks, the aging ballerina Grusinskaya
(Greta Garbo). HeÕs also teaming up with dying
accountant Otto Kringelein (Lionel Barrymore) against his former boss, Preysing (Wallace
Beery), a crooked industrialist. Furthermore, his ambitious stenographer, Flaemmchen
(Joan Crawford), makes the atmosphere at the Grand Hotel nothing short of exhilarating.
Rediscover this famed black-and-white classic as it is meant to be seen Ñ on the big screen Ñ
and then remain glued to your seats as NY film critic Noah Isenberg talks about what makes
GRAND HOTEL such a memorable film and its originator, Vicki Baum, a writer tremendously
underappreciated.
Noah Isenberg is Professor of Culture and Media at the New SchoolÕs Eugene Lang College
of Liberal Arts in New York City, where he teaches film history, theory, and criticism and also
serves as the Director of Screen Studies. As an author, he most recently published Edgar G. Ulmer: A Filmmaker at the Margins (California, 2014), which the New York Times hailed as
Òa page turner of a biographyÓ and the Huffington Post selected among its Best Film Books
of 2014. His other books include Detour (British Film Institute, 2008) and, as editor, Weimar Cinema: An Essential Guide to Classic Films of the Era (Columbia, 2009), which was named
a Choice Outstanding Academic Title. His upcoming book, WeÕll Always Have ÒCasablancaÓ: The Life, Legend, and Afterlife of HollywoodÕs Most Beloved Movie, will be published in early
2017 by W.W. Norton in the U.S. and by Faber & Faber in the U.K.
Winner of ÒBest PictureÓ at the 1932 Oscars, this Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer production is a brilliant adaptation of the Austrian-Jewish writer Vicki BaumÕs genre-defining 1929 novel, Menschen im Hotel.

Considered among the most democratic societies
in the world, Germany is home to EuropeÕs fastest
growing Jewish population. In fact, about half of
the 200,000 Jews who reside in Germany today Ñ
making up .2% of its total population Ñ are Israelis
who have obtained German passports or work
visas. So whatÕs it like being Jewish in a country
with such a harrowing Jewish past? ThatÕs exactly
what filmmaker Janina Quint and producer Tal
Recanati set out to discover.
Amassing personal stories from German Jews and
non-Jewish Germans, Israelis, and German-Jewish
Americans, Quint and Recanati offer viewers a
non-judgmental window into modern-day Germany
and uncover a broad spectrum of perspectives.
Touching on the effects of post-Holocaust guilt in
East and West Germany, the film reveals GermanyÕs
multifaceted social structure and its efforts
against anti-Semitism and antisocialist sentiment.
Quint and Recanati have a stake in their story and
recognize the need to bring these uncomfortable
yet necessary conversations out from the privacy
of German living rooms and offices into the public
sphere. What begins as a dialogue between
two friends quickly grows into an insightful and
evocative documentary that beautifully captures
GermanyÕs attempts toward reconciliation and

Itzak Shaked, the son of two Holocaust survivors, lived an average life in Israel as an industrialist,
until learning the true identity of his father, Yakov Kozalchic.
Known as ÒThe Warden of the Death Block,Ó Yakov was a Jewish Kapo in Auschwitz who
sacrificed his life to save as many of his fellow brethren as he could. His story begins in Poland,
but truly takes off in the 1920s when Yakov is found working alongside Al Capone and the
infamous German heavyweight Max Schmeling in New York City. From joining the circus
as a musician to returning home to start a family in Poland, Yakov seemed to have lived an
outrageously full life before seeing it torn apart by the Nazis. Separated from his wife and
children, who were imprisoned in Treblinka, Yakov was sent to Auschwitz, where he managed to
save himself from the gas chambers through his connections. However, he was unable to escape
his placement as Jewish Kapo of Block 11. While carrying out Nazi orders, that if defied were
punishable by death, Yakov used the little bit of independence and access he had to benefit his
fellow prisoners and save as many Jews and Poles as possible.
Now 68-year-old Itzak embarks on an unforgettable journey to recover his fatherÕs past and
meet the people whose lives Yakov changed forever.

meat shortage, Ariel (Alan Sabbagh), an affable and
slightly pudgy NYC economist who lives with his
dancer girlfriend, returns to his Argentinian-Jewish
roots in Buenos Aires. Usher, ArielÕs father and the
macher behind the Foundation (the Jewish welfare
organization in el Once), while only reachable by
phone, eagerly summons his son for favors and
random errands. Running the Foundation in his God-
like manner, Usher implores Ariel to work with Eva,
his nearly mute Orthodox assistant. Amidst much
chaos, the two develop an unusual friendship that
arouses ArielÕs piety and inspires him to revisit the
Jewish identity he long left behind.
Daniel OrtegaÕs documentary-style camerawork
and Margarita TamborninoÕs seamless production
design aid Burman in rendering a realistic portrait
of contemporary Jewish life in Buenos Aires.
BurmanÕs wryly amusing sense of humor and knack
for illuminating heavy topics with ease make THE TENTH MAN among the most enjoyable festival
films this year!

During WWII, Meme, Andrea, and Bube, three
Italian Jewish brothers, spent several of their
formative years hiding in a man-made cave built
by their father in the Tuscan mountains while the
Nazis occupied Italy. Seventy years later, Bube,
the youngest of the trio, gathers his brothers for
an unforgettable family reunion in the hopes of
rediscovering the mysterious cave that saved their
family from being deported to the camps.
Retracing their steps and intimate experiences
during the war, the brothers, now as different as
can be, bond and deliberate over the veracity of
their memories, sharing hearty conversations and
equally robust Italian meals along the way. From
early morning breakfasts to a late night Shabbos
feast, the food of their homeland evolves into
the centerpiece of Bube, Andrea, and MemeÕs
adventures through Tuscany. Facing the limitations
of their imperfect memories and the physical
setbacks of their aging bodies, the brothers resolve
to accomplish their goal, come mozzarella or
prosciutto! Joking and arguing aside, these kindred
spirits spend countless hours trekking through the
thick Tuscan forest to create a new memory, one
that will serve as the basis for a brotherly bond that
will remain the rest of their lives.
Directed by Tamar Tal Anati (the award-winning
director of Life in Stills), SHALOM ITALIA, filled
with humor, food, and Tuscan landscapes, is a
charming and poignant documentary that straddles
the boundary between history and myth Ñ both
equally pivotal in forming our individual and
collective identities.

Meet Moos Ñ if Barbara Streisand and Lena Dunham
had a love child, sheÕd be it.
Trapped between wanting to care for her
grieving father and having a life of her own, Moos
desperately wants to become a theater star. But
instead of rehearsing curtain calls, Moos spends
her days singing into her steam iron while helping
out with the family textile business. That is, until
Sam, her childhood best friend, returns home from
serving in the Israeli army.
With Sam in need of a place to work, Moos finally
has the chance to break free from familial demands
and to apply to university, where she plans to study
musical theater and advance her singing career. The
trouble is, without prior professional training, Moos
is far from making the cut. With her best-laid plans
at a standstill, two illicit love affairs on the horizon,
and escalating tension at home, MoosÕ life has never
been this complicated or this exciting.

MASTER CLASSWITH WRITER/DIRECTOR TODD SOLONDZ Friday, November 18 | 1 Ð 3 PM | Followed by reception from 3 Ð 4 pm
401 Fisher-Bennett Hall, University of Pennsylvania
Sponsored in part by Penn Cinema Studies
Writer/Director Todd Solondz has been accused of many things: from being overly cynical
and pessimistic to making ÒcruelÓ films that highlight the failings and trappings of Òfaux
liberalismÓ or blind adherence to the mythos of the American dream. One thing is certain
about the cult indie legend: no one can reproach Solondz for disingenuous filmmaking.
A master of his craft, Solondz is interested in exposing certain truths about the world and
human nature through unflinching dramatic realism and bitter humor Ñ what Solondz
has referred to as his Òsad comedies.Ó Instead of playing to the whims of an audience or
a team of Hollywood studio execs, Solondz prefers to make earnest films that explore
the remote recesses of what it feels like to be a person. The result: eight feature films to
his credit, including Welcome to the Dollhouse, Happiness, Storytelling, Palindromes, Life During Wartime (HappinessÕ semi-sequel), Dark Horse and this yearÕs highly enjoyable and
engaging Wiener-Dog.
In partnership with Penn Cinema Studies, PJFF is offering students, filmmakers, and
movie buffs alike an unbelievable opportunity to learn from one of the most unique and
remarkable independent filmmakers of our time. In this two-hour Master Class, you will
experience a little glimpse of what itÕs like to be a student in SolondzÕs graduate filmmaking
course at NYUÕs Tisch School of the Arts. Imagine all of the knowledge you can reap about
SolondzÕs films, directing, and screenwriting in one unforgettable afternoon!
The event is free and is followed by a complimentary reception. As this event has limited
seating, we kindly encourage advance registration as early as possible to guarantee
your seat.
I MAY BE ACCUSED OF A CERTAIN KIND OF MISANTHROPY BUT I THINK I COULD ARGUE THE OPPOSITE. I THINK THAT IT'S ONLY BY ACKNOWLEDGING THE FLAWS, THE FOIBLES, THE FAILINGS AND SO FORTH OF WHO WE ARE THAT WE CAN IN FACT FULLY EMBRACE THE ALL OF WHO WE ARE.”– TODD SOLONDZ DISCUSSING HIS FILM "HAPPINESS"

WOMEN IN SINK
Directed by Iris Zaki
Documentary Short
Israel, UK | 2015 | 36 min
Hebrew with English subtitles
Philadelphia Premiere
In WOMEN IN SINK, award-winning director
Iris Zaki chats with Arab and Jewish
women getting their hair done at a small,
neighborhood hair salon in the heart of
Haifa. Placing her camera above the sink,
where clients lean back to get their hair
shampooed, Iris converses with women from
different backgrounds, generations, and
political leanings about their thoughts on
living in what she sees as a divided country.
Yet through her unique interactions with
the women, Iris reveals more commonalities
between her subjects than differences and,
in turn, challenges her own preconceived
notions of what she thought she would
discover in making the film.
WOMEN IN SINKÕs many awards include:
Best Short Film, Jewish Motifs International
Film Festival, Poland, May 2015; Best
European Documentary, The European
Independent Film Festival, France, April
