If you’re interested in returning to college to earn a bachelor’s degree, you will quickly learn a number of acronyms, including SAT, ACT and FAFSA. At least three others also should be included: ATPI, BAAS and UNT. The Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences (BAAS) degree program at the University of North Texas (UNT) is designed for students who want to complete a four-year accredited bachelor’s degree and who may have course credits from community college, military experience or technical training. Applied Technology and Performance Improvement (ATPI) is a major in the BAAS degree program that provides opportunities to move up to leadership positions as a supervisor, manager or team leader within a specialization. Through the ATPI major, students develop skills in areas such as personal development, instructional strategies, leadership, basic and advanced computer technology, human relations, and communications. ATPI students may complete an area of emphasis within learning, computing or performance. This major is taught completely online by faculty regarded for their innovative practices in distance learning. If you’re a student in the ATPI degree, you may benefit by applying completed elective credits toward the degree as “occupational specialization” credits. Your work experience may qualify for credits based on an evaluation of your resume by one of the Department of Learning Technologies faculty. For more information about the ATPI program and BAAS degree from UNT, visit www.baas.unt.edu, email [email protected] or call toll free 877.275.7547 to speak
with an advisor in UNT’s College of Information. The University of North Texas is a s t u d e n t - c e n t e r e d public research university and the flagship of the UNT System. With more than 36,000 students, UNT is one of Texas’
largest universities, offering 97 bachelor’s, 101 master’s and 48 doctoral degree programs. Many of these programs are nationally and internationally recognized. UNT has been named one of America’s 100 Best College Buys® for 14 consecutive years and is listed as a “Best in the West” college by The Princeton Review. The U.S. News & World Report America’s Best Colleges 2010 guide named UNT as one of the top national universities that are “leading the pack” in innovative changes. UNT was the only Texas public university on the list. At UNT, the faculty and staff are dedicated to creating opportunities for bright students. This year, UNT earned a third consecutive Texas Higher Education Star Award for its efforts to open doors to more students. UNTstudents learn to think critically from some of America’s most respected and most recognized experts in their field, industry leaders and insiders, world-renowned musicians, and groundbreaking scientists. UNT alumni are changing the world for the better — they lead Fortune 500 companies, classrooms, orchestras and laboratories. UNT is committed to developing thinkers and problem-solvers. Offering a traditional college experience and the quality of a private university at an affordable cost, UNT provides abundant opportunities for students to discover the power of ideas.

Lt. Jerry Johannesen is completing his ATPI BAAS degree at UNT while in the U.S. Army. “I was commissioned in 2008, and I needed a bachelor’s degree to move up to captain. I looked at many different schools. UNT is the only one that gave me a helping hand. I liked that I could use what I learned in the army toward my degree to finish early. I have 18 months to complete my degree, so the online classes are nice. Going to school full time is hard for me with my family living on base, and because I deal with post traumatic stress disorder. Online classes make it easier for me to relax, concentrate and study. I am taking six classes, and the tools that UNT provides help me make sure I’m on track. UNT is the only school that has helped me out with returning to school. I find that the students are friendly and the instructors are ready to help me with any issue. If I e-mail an instructor with a question, I’ll have an answer by 5 o’clock that day.” Jerry frequents the UNT Veteran’s Center, designed to help student veterans
navigate the university resources for academic success. The center hosts programs designed with the particular needs and interests of student veterans and their transition from service to college in mind. An estimated 1200 veterans are currently enrolled at UNT, which was just named a military friendly campus by G.I. Jobs. For more information on veteran support visit us at www.unt.edu/veterans.

“Managing projects for a government contractor requires a unique skill set. I’m pleased to see a degree program addressing this issue and believe it’s highly suited for the Dallas/Fort Worth area.”
John R. Murphey, Retired Chairman & CEO,Bell Helicopter/Textron, Texas Wesleyan BBA ’71
With its beautiful 416-acre campus, small classes, caring professors and personalized instruction, Stephen F. Austin State University feels like a private college but with the value of a state university. Located in beautiful Nacogdoches, just a few hours southeast of Fort Worth in the heart of Texas Forest Country, SFA delivers a quality education in an ideal setting that is close to home. It’s called “The Lumberjack Experience.”
SFA’s dedication to providing top-quality higher education dates back more than 85 years. Today, more than 12,000 SFA students benefi t from this tradition of academic excellence coupled with the academic breadth one might expect from a much larger university.
New student housing facilities are among the recently completed projects, with plans for a new freshman residence hall currently underway. The recently renovated Baker Pattillo Student Center is a popular meeting place for students and features a three-story atrium, food court and movie theater. To recharge the body and spirit, students head to the new Student Recreation Center where they enjoy the climbing wall, outdoor pool and lazy river, and many other amenities.
SFA students work hard, but extracurricular activities also play an important role in their college experience. More than 200 student organizations, including a vibrant Greek community and dynamic Student Activities Association, provide endless opportunities for student involvement and community service. NCAA Division 1 athletics, including football, basketball and baseball, fuel the Lumberjack spirit, while art exhibits, concerts and theatrical performances serve as outlets for cultural enrichment.
“The Lumberjack Experience” is found only at SFA. Students graduate from SFA with their eyes on the future, but they never forget what it means to be a Lumberjack. Learn more at TheLumberJackExperience.com.
