AUTHORIZITION FOR TEST.

1. Thin test was authorized by reference (a) and other referencespertinent to thi s problem are listed as references (b) and (a) .

Referenc e: (a) Bu.Eng.Ltr. 865-4/L5(7-22-Da) of 24 July 1937.(b) Specifications SGS(65)—103a , Buzzera interior

Communication, dated 1 June 1936.Cc) Port smouth Drwg, 29583—ALT. 0., Bureau File

No. U—T—1196-L.

OBJECT OF TEST.

2. The object of this test was to determine cønformanoe of thesubject buzzor with the specifications, reference (b) , and its euitabilityfor Nave], use.

ABSTRACT OF TEST.

3. ~~The subject basser was set up at this Labor atory in auitabletest circuits where its performance was carefully observed while undertest for conformanóe with the specifications. All taste were made in theorder specified and were concluded with an inspection of the sample buzzerto ascertain whether it was in accordance with the spscifications in thematter of materials, design and workmanship.

~~8CRIPTI0N OF ILATE RI.AI~ U~~ER TEST.

4. This buzzer , shown by Plates 1 and 2 , was manufacturedand submitted for test by the Navy Yard , Portsmouth , New Hampshire,as a Navy Type A3-1l5 volt , D.C. buzze r , Port smouth Drug. No.29583 ,Bureau P u . No • U—T—],196-L.

5 • The buzzer La of the vibrating type and embodies a setof adjustable contacts for interrupting the current • It employs asingle form wound coil located on a laminated core of “U” shape .The armature i. of flat steel and completes the magnetic circuit .Th noise is produced by the wtr 4~ l”g of the armature ag..{viet thepole piece. when the coil is energized and against the limitingscrew when deenergized. The ent ire mechanism and a phenolic ta r—~{~~l block are mounted on bosses equipp ed wit h steel insert s lo-cated ib the bottom of the .lum4n~m 81107 case .

6. The case cover is of cast ~~ metal and has three (3)concent ric grooves which contact a 3/16 inch square rubber gasketpart ly recessed in the rim of the case. Steel insert s are. provide din the rim of the case for the brass cover-securing screws.

7. The case is provided with four (4) mounting luga andtwo (2) bosses tapped for 3/4 inch (IPS) terminal tubes.

8. The unit weighs 2 lbs. 14 oz., is 5.5 inches in diameterand 2.5 inches in dept h. It is finished in gray on the outside andblack on the inside.

£THOD 0? TE8i.~9. The buzzer , as rece ived, was first tested for power con—

stizption, sound output , and pitch of note when energized at itsrated voltage.

10. It was next tested for shock integrity by placing iton a Bureau of Engineering standard shock machine and given the re-qairsd number of 250 foot pound blows while energized and deenergizedand mounted in th. positions required under subparagraph p.~ g(3).

U. Tollowing, the buzzer was tested for endurance consj~~.jngof an operation cycle of “one aiwlte an” and “on. minute oft” ~cr anunii’tsrrupt.d period of 1400 cycles . Thi. test was conducted S.n twoperiods, the first 700 cycles at an ambient t.sparature of ‘70° C.and th. second 700 cycles at 0° C. miring these period. the tempera-ture rise of the winding was obtained, using the resistance method .

12. 1~~n followed teat. for operation of the buzzer &t 10percent u~d.r vol~iag. and 10 p.rcent over voltage, (l03.SV .” 326.5V.)when inct**sd 45 from the vertical in all plane..

13 The buzzer was than subjected to a dielectric t,st of1500 vofta, A.C. 60 cycle., applied continuo usly for a period ofone minute , followed by an insulation t..t, using a 1000 voltmegger.

14 • The unit was then tested for uatertightnea. by imeers-ing it in water to a depth of 3 feet for a period of 12 hou ra, fol-lowed by a dielectric t..t of 500 volta, £.C. 60 cycles, appliedcontinuous ly for a period of one minute, and an insulation test ,using a 600 volt meg~er.

15. An inspection of the buzzer, as to its conformancewith the specifi cati ons in the matter of material., 4eaign andworkme.nahip, concluded the test.
