The case studies summarized in what follows are representative of the types of analysis that we have been involved in.

Roadway crash barriers are a very important component to highway safety and are under continual development. To help offset the high cost of testing, a numerical model of a cable reinforced crash barrier system was developed. The simulations involved a pick-up truck striking a longitudinal barrier at 70 km/hr, at a 25 degree incident angle. ANSYS® ICEM CFD™
was used to generate the structured mesh of the barricade system that was then solved using ANSYS LS-DYNA. The use of simulation lead to several improvements in the design before actual prototypes were manufactured, resulting in a better design and a signi�cant reduction in the cost of testing.
Pickup TL2 Crash Simulations
Understanding the effect of a bird strike (in a gas turbine) is critical to their safe operation. Minimum bird ingestion standards for jet engines were developed by the FAA in the 60’s but do require costly test rigs and challenging numerical models. The technical team at SimuTech have developed an advanced modelling process that captures the diverse nature of this highly non-linear problem, inclusive of blade deterioration and bird material model non-linearities.
Bird Strike Analysis
ANSYS ICEM CFD is a world class Hex (brick) mesher that is often used as a pre-processor for ANSYS LS-DYNA, especially when a highly ef�cient mesh is required for a very large model. Developing a customer GUI on the ANSYS
Workbench allowed for the seamless integration of several world class programs in a single, highly productive environment. The net result was a streamlined process that reduced the overall analysis time dramatically.
Custom GUI / Custom Post-Processing
Wanting to reduce the likelihood of oil spills, international standards require ship builders to use a double wall hull design even though it has been demonstrated that this design does little to prevent a hull breech when impacted. With SimuTech’s help, an Ottawa Ontario based engineering company has demonstrated that a newly developed structural composite laminate will reduce this risk signi�cantly through its advanced energy absorption properties.
Ship hull collisions were modeled using ANSYS DesignModeler to manage the geometry, ANSYS ICEM CFD to generate the structured hex mesh and ANSYS LS-DYNA was used as the solver. Through this analysis it was shown that the resulting hull designs not only meet, but exceed, the hull energy absorption requirements and will lead to much improved designs.

A protective casing surrounding a six-blade cutting fan had to be upgraded in order to guarantee the containment of a �y-off broken blade. The requirement was to develop a repeatable process to analyze several design options for impact and fragmentation, in search of an optimal, compliant con�guration.
The geometry was managed by ANSYS DesignModeler. ANSYS ICEM CFD was used to generate the high quality structured hex mesh and ANSYS LS-DYNA was used to manage the solve.
Protective Casing Impact Analysis
Demiliterization of an area requires the incineration of live ordinance. A proposed solution to this requirement was a steel vessel that used a plasma torch to liquefy silica at a high enough temperature to vaporize the ordinance as they were dropped inside. However, in the event that the ordinance
exploded before vaporizing, it became necessary to demonstrate that the proposed vessel would be able to sustain several such blasts without failure. ANSYS AUTODYN was used to successfully perform this simulation and verify the integrity of the proposed design.
Munitions Disposal Vessel
SimuTech has had signi�cant involvement in providing analysis expertise to the nuclear industry. The requirements have included: structural integrity, radiation exposure, model
and seismic analysis, analysis for Nuclear QA requirements and ASME code compliance veri�cation.
Nuclear Containment Vessel
SimuTech assisted Revision Eyewear Inc. in the redesign of a Helmet Attachment Kit (HAK) for the Canadian Department of National Defence with the aim of improving its functionality.
The new HAK needed to comply with stringent impact damage resistance requirements and SimuTech performed simulations to evaluate
the redesigned HAK and to identify highly stressed areas. The simulations were performed using ANSYS LS-DYNA and showed that during impact excessive lateral displacements could lead to component dislodgement. This enabled Revision Eyewear Inc. engineers to improve their design before creating and testing expensive prototypes.
Helmet Attachment Kit Impact Resistance
The U.S. Navy is currently using small boats for unmanned, open water operations. The current solutions are very heavy and have a relatively low durability. A much lighter and durable plastic molded design was proposed that needed to be quali�ed before production commitments were made. Through the use of drop test simulations, wave impact studies, and shock wave analysis,
several potential problem areas were identi�ed and corrected before the construction of even one prototype. The geometry was managed by ANSYS DesignModeler, ANSYS ICEM CFD was used to generate the structured mesh of the boat and simulations were completed with ANSYS LS-DYNA. Signi�cant cost savings were realized through this process.
Plastic Molded Boat Impact Analysis
The requirement for blasting in close proximity to a 100 year old concrete dam lead to the need for a numerical simulation of bedrock explosion modeling. Primarily due to its age, the concrete in an existing dam degraded to the degree that a new replacement dam was needed just downstream. New dam construction requires blasting in the adjacent
bedrock that could lead to failure of the existing dam, and �ooding before the new dam is completed. SimuTech constructed an explicit model of the complete dam and the surrounding bedrock, correlating and calibrating numerical results against the measured response from small localized blasts, leading to a high �delity analysis of the actual blasts
