TSAILE,Ariz.–OnMonday,Aug.21theUnitedStateswillexperienceatotalsolareclipseinwhichthemoonwillpassbetweenthesunandtheearthfromapproximately9:00a.m.(MDT)to2:00p.m.(MDT),andwillbevisibleacrosstheNavajoNation.

Inreverencefortheupcomingsolareclipse,theDinéCollegecampusinTsaile,Ariz.willhostatraditionalteachingevent,whichwillincludetraditionalguidanceandprayerfromNavajomedicinepeoplefrom10:00a.m.(MDT)to2:00p.m.(MDT).

CouncilDelegateNathanielBrown(Chilchinbeto,Dennehotso,Kayenta)saidduetoculturalprotocols,Navajopeoplemustfollowtraditionalproceduresasthesolareclipsetakesplace,andencouragedNavajocitizenstoparticipateinthetraditionalteachingevent.

“WeasDinéaregoingtoexperiencesomethingthatrarelyhappensacrossourlands,andwecanusethisrareopportunitytoteachourchildrenandpeopleaboutthesignificanceofthesolareclipse.Weareremindedofhowourancestorsreveredthisnaturalphenomenon,soIencourageourpeople,especiallyouryouth,toparticipateinthetraditionalteachingandprayergatheringatDinéCollege,”saidDelegateBrown.

DelegateBrownsaidthataccordingtotheNavajomedicinepeople,thetraditionalprotocolsandpracticesforNavajopeopleduringtheentiretyofthesolareclipseincludes:

• Stayinginsideyourhomeorbuilding,especiallyexpectingparents(motherandfather)• Refrainfromdrinkingwater/beveragesoreating(fasting)• Abstainfromnapping,intimacy,orpublicizing/broadcastingtheeclipse

TheNavajoNationgovernmentanditsofficeswillbeclosedonAug.21torespectthesolareclipseoccurrence.InamemodraftedbytheNavajoNation’sthreebranchchiefs,theNavajogovernmentmustabidebyFundamentalLawandrespectnatural,customary,traditional,andcommonlaws,asitisrecognizedinTitleIoftheNavajoNationCode.Pleaseseeattachedflyer.
