SEPTEMBER 2018 ELUL 5778 / TISHREI 5779
Something Old, Something New: The Days of Awe, 5779The Days of Awe, as you know, will soon be upon us. As we prepare for these most sacred of Jewish days, it’s important to note that we call them “The Days of Awe” not because they are the time when we say, “Awww, I’ve got to go to Temple again,” but rather because these are the days when each of us – individually and collectively – stand in God’s awesome presence to greet the new year and engage in the sacred act of teshuvah, repentance. It’s an awesome opportunity, and it’s not to be missed.
For those of you who have observed the Days of Awe here at Temple B’nai Tikvah before, a lot will be familiar in the way we celebrate them this year, but there will be some new elements of our observance, as well.
New Torah CoversTemple B’nai Tikvah’s intrepid group of fabric artists – Carolyn Devins, Polina Ersh, Deb Finkleman, Susan Podlog, and Nadine Waldman – have created a magnificent new set of holiday Torah covers for our congregation. These beautiful pieces of artwork were created specifically to complement the colors and textures of our sanctuary’s décor, and they will surely add to our sense of hiddur mitzvah – the beautification of ritual practice.
Come to Selichot services at 8:00 on September 1 and join us as we place these covers on our Torah scrolls for the very first time.
AliyotDuring the Torah services on the first day of Rosh Hashanah and on Yom Kippur, most of our aliyot – opportunities to come forward and recite a blessing over a part of the Torah reading – will go to groups of people rather than to individuals. Thus, one aliyah will go to those who celebrated their Bar or Bat Mitzvah ceremonies during the past year, another to new members, another to our past presidents. If you celebrated a simchah – joyous event – during the past year, prepare to be called up along with your fellow simchah celebrators, and if you endured an illness, the death of a loved one, or another trying experience this past year, prepare to be called up, too.
Two Great Options for Yom Kippur Afternoon
20 X 20 Talks – Powered by PechakuchaAt 1:30 pm on Yom Kippur Afternoon, we’ll be running an exciting new program in our sanctuary. We have invited a fascinating and diverse group of Temple members to speak to us about “turning.”
Continued on Page 2...

...‘Something Old, Something New’, Continued from Page 1...
Each speaker will submit 20 slides which will show for 20 seconds each, allowing the speaker exactly six minutes and forty seconds to address “Turning” from his or her own unique perspective. One speaker is a criminal defense attorney, another a new convert to Judaism, another a teen social activist. There will be eight to ten speakers in all; it promises to be a fantastic adventure as we hear and see their different perspectives on “turning” – a theme so central to these most Awesome of Days.
Chant Meditation ServiceAlso at 1:30 pm on Yom Kippur, Betsy Jameson will be leading a Chant Meditation Service in our chapel. This will be a gentle contemplative service employing Hebrew chant and guided meditation to expand and deepen the experience of teshuvah. Like the call of the shofar and the haunting notes of Kol Nidre, melodies and the silences between them help guide and deepen our inward turning.
No previous experience with meditation or chant is necessary. This is about listening and deepening, not performance.
Just as in the past, our observance of the Days of Awe here at Temple promises to be a meaningful and transformative experience for us all. I look forward to seeing you here.
In the meantime, please accept my wishes for a shanah tovah umetukah – a good, sweet new year for you and all your loved ones.

SHABBAT SCHOOL - NEW PARENT COORDINATOR
My name is Allyson Billings and I am our new Parent Coordinator for our Shabbat School. I have been a member of Temple B’nai Tikvah for the past two years. I remember the first time I walked into Temple and I didn’t know a single soul. After volunteering to help with the Shabbat School holidays, I now feel a part of the B’nai Tikvah community. To keep the tradition of celebrating special holidays throughout the school year with our children, we need your help!
I will be at the Shabbat School on the first day of school, September 22, with sign-up sheets looking for parent volunteers to help us organize Chanukah, Tu B’Shvat, Purim, a Seder for Passover and our end of year BBQ. Please stop by and sign up to help with the prep team, room set-up, and/or the cleanup team.
I look forward to seeing you on September 22.

ADULT EDUCATION UPDATEJENNIFER EISERMAN AND REBECCA KREL, COMMITTEE CHAIRS
Shanah Tovah Umetukah! May all have a good and sweet New Year! We are very excited to begin the 2018-19 program year for Adult Education at Temple B’nai Tikvah. Please look for the following adult education opportunities beginning after the Days of Awe:
Torah and Java to resume on Saturday, September 22 at 9:45 am. We will be discussing Parashat Ha’Azinu. As always, engaging discussion is accompanied by fresh Phil and Sebastian’s coffee, tea and a light nosh.
Our first Lunch and Learn talk will be held Wednesday, October 3. Please see Page 5 of this Kol Tikvah for more details.
Rabbi Glickman will be leading us through a study, Joseph Soloveitchik’s, The Lonely Man of Faith this fall. The Rabbi described this to us as “a challenging, deep plunge” into this important contemporary Jewish text. We know it will be rewarding to all who join him in this study. Please look for more information on dates, times and registration in Kol Tikvah and email blasts as the details become available.
The Adult Education committee is looking for volunteers who would like to lead Torah n Java study, as well as those who might like to give a talk for Lunch and Learn. We would also like to offer more Tasting Judaism events this year, and are looking for volunteers who might like to organize one of these. If you love to cook Jewish-style foods, please think about sharing your enthusiasm and knowledge with others!
CYNTHIA SIMMONS
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEYears ago an accountants’ organization I belonged to was having dinner at the Alberta legislature. I was asked to give the prayer before the meal. (Gulp!) Why me I wondered. Well, I am a woman and Jewish so I figured getting me to give the prayer was a way of demonstrating their inclusiveness. Ok, I thought, I can do this. Still, I worried. I struggled. What to say… what to say? But then I remembered a prayer that Rabbi Goldson gave at a fundraiser that was held together with a local church. He talked about how the Jewish faith believes that God and people work together to create the world. He used the meal being served as an example. The food came from light, rain, and photosynthesis - those things existing largely outside the control of mankind. The meal on our plate came from the skill and effort of the farmer, the grocer, the cook, and the server. The increased care, understanding and desire to give to our cause came from our sharing the meal and coming to know those at our table.
I took this great idea and I ran with it. My prayer was a hit! (If prayers can be such a thing.) The people at my table smiled at me, they patted me on the back, and some even asked for copies. (They also looked at me a little differently for a few meetings after that.) I had tried to make the people in
the room – legislators and accountants alike – remember that what we do is more than a simple act or a job. Our actions, our work, and the approach we take in doing it, has impact. It creates our world.
Now why do I bring this event up? I was reminded of this perspective on the way our actions can change things as I attended various functions at Temple this summer. I hesitate to say that the actions I saw being carried out were creating the world (though the philosopher in me recognized that to be true), but I will say that I watched the actions of Rabbi Glickman and our members working together to build our Temple family. I saw the Rabbi comfort, encourage, teach, and listen. Importantly, I watched congregants do the same. When the Rabbi was away on vacation different members read Torah, gave sermons, led prayers and discussions, and helped us raise our voices in song. Yoga classes were held and attended. Preparations for the school year were carried out so that all would run smoothly in spite of transitions. Onegs were set out and consumed together with laugher, discussion, and perhaps a little gossip. Honey cakes were baked and the sick and sad were visited.
Summers are often a time of lassitude. This Calgary summer with its record heat, hail, and smoke was met by members of our congregation coming together without pause. I watched them energetically contribute through leadership and acts of kindness. Their actions built community and strengthened our congregation. Ok, I will admit it: they built a better world.
It was a glorious summer.

FOUNDER’S CORNERFORTY YEARS | PREPARED BY RON BING
This past summer I was asked to lead a Torah study when our Rabbi was away on holidays. The study was on the first chapter of Deuteronomy, “Devarim” Verse 3: “It was the 40th year, on the first day of the eleventh month that Moses addressed the Israelites in accordance with the instructions that Adonai had given him for them”. Verse 8: “See I place the land at your disposal. Go take possession of the land…”
During the Torah study I drew a parallel with the beginnings of Temple B’nai Tikvah as we will soon celebrate our 40th year as a reform congregation in Calgary. Forty years ago Judy and I were attending services in a house at a Havoura, having left Beth Israel Synagogue several years earlier. At that time I phoned my mother in Montreal asking that she contact the Canadian Council of Liberal Congregations (CCLC) for assistance in starting a Reform congregation in Calgary. On February 23, 1979 we received a letter from Arthur Grant (part time director of the CCLC) indicating that he would be travelling to Calgary on his way to Camp Swig in California. He asked that we contact fellow Jews who might be interested. Two meetings were held at our home in Chinook Park where we discussed the idea of holding Friday evening services and starting a religious school for our kids. On April 6, 1979 thirteen families got together to celebrate the first Reform Shabbat service in our living room at 1308 Carlyle Avenue. Norm Yanofsky led the music with his guitar and Henry Zimmer read the Torah portion. That evening service was the first time Norm and I met.
Calgary became our “Promised Land” as we read in “Devarim.” We did not have to fight the Amorites, but we did have to overcome some obstacles as the Jewish community was unfamiliar with Reform Judaism. Please understand that forty years ago Temple B’nai Tikvah was only a dream. The dream became a reality in April 1979 and continues to this day.
Please do not take Temple B’nai Tikvah for granted by joining for your children and then leaving after their B’nai Mitzvahs. We need all of you to participate together so that we will succeed in celebrating another 40 years as we go from strength to strength. Judy and I wish you a sweet New Year 5779.

SELICHOT SERVICEThis service is held on a Saturday evening prior to Rosh Hashanah. The mood of Selichot, one of contemplation and self-examination, enables us to prepare for the Days of Awe which are nearly upon us. Selichot services will be held at Temple B’nai Tikvah at 8:00 pm on September 1st. We join together following services for a Kiddush to wish each other L’Shanah Tovah.
CHILDREN’S PROGRAMOn the first day of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur mornings, there will be an educational program downstairs in the classroom facilities from approximately 9:00 - 9:45 am. Children from three years to grade four are welcome. There is no charge for the program.
TASHLICH SERVICE/PICNIC Tashlich, a brief, yet beautiful ceremony held beside a river or stream, will take place at Stanley Park again this year (4A St. & 42 Ave. SW at West parking lot). On Rosh Hashanah afternoon at 2:30 pm we will meet near the west parking lot at the river in Stanley Park to prepare for Yom Kippur by symbolically casting our sins into the “depths of the waters.” We encourage you to bring a picnic to the park and join with family and friends for a festive lunch before the service.
ROSH HASHANAH (2ND DAY)An intimate, poetic take on Rosh Hashanah worship, this lay-led service will use the liturgy developed by Rabbis Steinitz and Voss Altman. Rabbi Glickman will offer the D’var Torah.
A CONFESSION FOR OUR TIME A special spiritual Yom Kippur service. Congregants will lead us through this beautiful hour-long service on Yom Kippur afternoon.
YIZKOR (MEMORIAL) SERVICE As part of the afternoon service on Yom Kippur, we hold a beautiful and moving memorial service. This year, we will remember our own dear ones during a designated moment of silence and will inscribe their names in a Yom Kippur Memorial Booklet which will be distributed to the congregation on Yom Kippur. The Yizkor Service begins at 5:30 pm. The Yizkor list is created from our member database.
