share with you the many successes and challenges of 2010 and

our hopes for the future. We would like to thank our extraordinary

dancers for their artistry and devotion to Andrea and to Gallim. We

are equally grateful to our Patrons and the new Friends of Gallim

MISSION

Gallim Dance is a contemporary dance company dedicated to

creating and performing innovative work by Andrea Miller, nurturing

the careers of young artists and stimulating the imagination of a

diverse international audience. Andrea’s work weaves together

technical virtuosity, physical exhaustion, intimate expressions of

the self and an element of the theatrical.

TO ACHIEVE OUR MISSION:

Gallim creates an environment that fosters experimentation as

well as personal and artistic risk-taking.

Andrea immerses herself in the life of her dancers and young

artists through workshops, classes and personal mentorship.

Gallim Dance counts on an administration that is creative,

dependable and quick to respond to the needs of the

moment while looking ahead to the future.

• A cast of 12 dancers• Sophisticated lighting design by Vincent Vigilante• Elegant costumes by Jose Solis• Stage design by Jon Bausor• A custom-painted green marley which was donated to Gallim Dance in early 2010.

Through extensive marketing and audience cultivation, Wonderland opened each night to a sold out theater and great reception.

Remix and RemakeI Can See Myself in Your Pupil (2008) underwent significant transformations with each performance, while at the same time, continuing to be a favorite of all audiences.

Blush (2009) was revisited and performed at the White Bird Festival and in Santander, Spain with changes in cast that gave it a fresh look.

TEACHING

CREATIVE RESIDENCIES In April 2010, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival awarded Gallim Dance a Creative Development Residency - two weeks of unobstructed creative time in the Doris Duke Theater.

TEACHING RESIDENCIES This year the company traveled to SUNY Potsdam for a week-long teaching residency and later, Skidmore College for a one-month teaching and creative residency where they developed new material for Wonderland. Andrea continues to be a sought-after teacher at Peridance Capezio Center and Steps on Broadway, and is a cofounder of the Movement Invention Program, which is currently in its second year.

FUTURE TEACHING PLANSIn 2011, Gallim will take a new step and send our Company Members as representatives of the Gallim aesthetic and movement repertoire, while giving them their own individual voice and initiative in the classroom. Teaching opportunities shared throughout the company will include:

• DancewaveCaroline Fermin will teach Gallim repertory over a 5-month period, to a diverse group of talented high school dance students in Brooklyn

• University of UtahAndrea and Francesca will travel to Utah where they will spend 3-weeks working with students in both technique and repertoire.

• Arts UmbrellaTroy Ogilvie will travel to Vancouver, Canada to work with talented youth who are able to take part-in the program free of charge or at a reduced rate through bursaries, scholarships and outreach programs.

• Project LaunchFrancesca Romo will travel to California to teach two Master Classes in Gallim Repertory, and will perform a solo as part of the weekend.

• Movement Invention ProjectAs a founding member of MIP, Andrea will teach students ages 19 -25 over a two-week period this summer.

• Jacobs PillowAndrea will join of Jacobs Pillow Contemporary Teaching Faculty to teach their students technique and repertory for one week this summer.

For Gallim Dance, an annual extended residency has become a tradition

and a necessity. It is during these periods that the company comes together

to create, experiment with new material, push each others’ boundaries, and

explore their collective potential.

In 2010, the company spent a total of one and a half months in residence

together.

ADMINISTRATIVEHIGHLIGHTS

STRENGTHENING OPERATIONSThe administrative focus of Gallim Dance shifted significantly in 2010 to emphasize more fluid communication, aggressive marketing, and standardized operations. To achieve these goals, we took the following actions:

ORGANIZATIONAL RESTRUCTURINGOur new organizational chart and job descriptions allow us to:

• More clearly allocate tasks and responsibilities• Reduce administrative clogs• Accelerate our turn around response to important correspondence, tasks and requests.

In 2010, we were supported by a team of five seasonal interns and various volunteers.

WEB-BASED OPERATIONSOur online database in Google Docs and company-wide calendars are able to be updated and synched in real time. Specific calendars assist with grant planning and filing, rehearsal and studio booking, choreographer availability and administration manpower.

STANDARDIZATION OF FORMS AND PROCEDURESA Standard Operating Procedures checklist details each person’s responsibilities and deadlines for new projects as they arise.

In conjunction with this list, the use of the following forms create a stable and identifiable framework to which each team member can contribute: • Presenters Form -- Details all information needed for a prospective engagement • TripIt -- Compiles all logistical details of tours and performances • Technical Riders -- Explain all production needs of each performance • Grants and Foundations Database • International Festivals and Universities Database

NEW DANCER CONTRACTSSix of our most senior dancers were offered new contracts and as a result:

• Guaranteed their gainful employment for at least 20 weeks over a six-month period• Established a sense of forethought and stability that mirrors the administrative structure• Dancers were added to payroll• The company was guaranteed dancers’ availability for performances, rehearsals, and meetings • The unique Gallim aesthetic is preserved by limiting the amount of work the dancers can do with other companies if it will not contribute to their artistic growth.

NON-PROFIT INCORPORATION AND TAX-EXEMPT STATUSGallim Dance hired the services of Robert Klugman, Esq., and with the help of CPA Scott Bercu, drafted and filed the paperwork necessary to incorporate as a non-profit entity with tax-exempt status. Our application was approved by the IRS in November 2010, establishing Gallim Dance Company Inc. tax-exempt retroactively as of July 15, 2010.

ADOPT A WORKcampaign

CORPORATE SUPPORTSince 2008, Gallim Dance has counted on the unfailing, generous support from First Republic Bank. This consistent funding has allowed Gallim to create cutting-edge work such as Wonderland at The Joyce Theater. In the coming year, Gallim Dance will continue to seek new corporate partnerships in order to ensure the artistic potential, performance opportunities, and growth of an administrative infrastructure that enhances the depth and breadth of the company.

INDIVIDUAL FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGNSADOPT A WORKThe world premiere of Wonderland at The Joyce was the largest project that Gallim Dance has undertaken to date. In order to make the piece a reality, Gallim launched the Adopt A Work campaign to help raise funds for the creation and premiere of this exciting new work. Through this campaign, Gallim was able to raise $17,050 in donations from individual donors and $10,000 from First Republic Bank towards the final costs of the production.

This was even more successful than the Adopt a Dancer campaign launched in 2009 which also received press coverage in Gig Magazine, the international reference publication for arts administration.

FRIENDS OF GALLIMIn an effort to increase contact with our most loyal fans and supporters, we launched the Friends of Gallim campaign to cultivate support that was both in-kind and financial. We celebrated the New York City Center debut at a lovely reception before our Fall for Dance performances at the home of Jim and Cecilia Herbert.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY GALLIM!Gallim Dance completes its 4th year of operation in December 2010. To celebrate that momentous step in the development of the company, we are launching a Gallim Birthday Gift initiative to raise $10 from each of our constituents.

GALLIM GIVES BACKCAROLINE FERMIN

Dancer Caroline Fermin is extremely passionate about teaching and community outreach. In 2010, we offered our dancers contracts for the first time which allowed us to hold rehearsals any day of the week. However, we routinely schedule rehearsals around Caroline’s teaching commitments to ensure that she is able to continue the work that is so personally important to her. Additionally, we have created a proposal to request the underwriting of her annual salary so she may continue to devote her time in under-served communities with no detriment to her own livelihood.

DANCERS RESPONDING TO AIDSIn July 2010, Gallim Dance participated in the 16th Annual Fire Island Dance Festival, a fundraiser hosted and organized by Dancers Responding to AIDS. We also made a DRA appeal during our Joyce Season in August 2010, helping to raise over $400 in one evening for AIDS research and prevention in performing arts communities.

NATIONAL DOWN SYNDROME SOCIETYGallim Dance was honored to participate in the first Annual Cono D’Alto Foundation “DowneWithFashion” event supporting the National Down Syndrome Society. The event for which Gallim donated their performance and two tickets to the Joyce premiere, paired 40 professional models with a group of aspiring young women with Down Syndrome to launch a new clothing line. In all, over $8,000 were raised for NDSS.

SING FOR HOPESing for Hope is an organization with which Gallim Dance collaborates often. In 2010, we participated in their “Play Me, I’m Yours” event which placed pianos around the five boroughs of New York City to promote free and accessible music. The final performance was held in Lincoln Center Plaza and featured a performance by Gallim Dance with live accompaniment. Gallim Dance also donated a performance at the Rubin Museum Gala in October 2010.

OPEN REHEARSALS + SHOWINGSGallim Dance has been happy to open various rehearsals and hold a few informal showings of new and old repertory to donors of organizations with whom we work including Dance Theater Workshop, Gina Gibney Dance Center, and New York City Center.

INTERNATIONALCOMMISSIONING EXCHANGE

“In my recent commissions for Noord Nederlandse Dans and Bern:Ballett, both state ballet companies, a conversation has emerged about expanding on the concept and structure of commissioning work. Traditionally a choreographer is invited to create on a host company. Because my work is so fundamentally created with and for the dancers I am in the room with, while it is extremely exciting to meet new dancers, I find it challenging to reach the full potential of the exchange. I want my dancers, who speak my language and are hungry to absorb new idea, to come with me to collaborate with these commissioning companies. I am certain that in this environment of exchange my work can leap to a new level, and I can expand my career as a choreographer and artistic director of Gallim Dance.

I am proposing a series of projects where two companies temporarily become one. Each choreographer creates a piece drawing on this combined company of dancers. The two works will make up an evening length program that will be premiered in both host countries. The works will also be made with an additional smaller version, so that each company may add the new work to their own repertory that will be available for touring. This allows the chance for each choreographer’s work to be seen in venues where their own company may not have the opportunity to be booked.”

LENGUAPartially funded by the Jerome Foundation,

Travel and Study Grant ProgramLengua will consider how in the interstices of body language and verbal language, exists a seed of unique cultural experience. This piece will be a meditation on culture heritage through the semantic study of communication, inspired by Andrea’s own experience learning Hebrew while living in Israel for two years, dancing in the world renowned Batsheva Dance Ensemble, as well as growing up speaking Spanish and learning English and French at a young age. During the time she lived in Israel, Andrea became very aware of the physical intricacies of our communication, from listening to a screaming taxi driver, phrasing her first sentence, and later phrasing her first joke, she discovered how body language, as much as the spoken language, is a reflection of our culture. The title Lengua, meaning both “tongue” and “language,” embodies the physical effort of the tongue forming words, and the complexity, poetry and magic of the language that is produced. Through movement, text and music, Andrea will look at translating questions about her cultural identity and artistic voice into the new work.

WORKS IN PROGRESS 2011

BEYOND THE MACHINE/DECONSTRUCTING CHOPIN

Princess Grace Works in Progress ResidencyBaryshnikov Arts Center, May 2011

Partially funded by American Music Center andO’Donnell Green Music and Dance Foundation

In Deconstructing Chopin, Andrea will use the “Blind Ear Music” software to interpret, deconstruct, manipulate, and reinvent the music of Chopin as inspiration, interlacing the live generation of new compositions that are based on his works, with segments of actual Chopin compositions.

Music plays a large role in Andrea’s choreography, and since this year marks the bicentennial of Chopin’s birth, she is eager to pay tribute to this great composer who is often referred to as “one of the most influential composers on the piano” and “the poet of the piano.” Though he lived and worked during the Romantic period, Chopin’s work has a strong technique that hints at classicism, which is reflected in the heightened emotions that come through in his music. Andrea views this project as an artistic interpretation of Cubism in which she and composer Jakub Ciupinski will be taking Chopin’s pieces apart and reassembling them in many different creative ways, mindfully distorting his work. We hope to push this idea to its limits, finding the cusp of how far we can go while exploring how recognizable or not Chopin’s work will be. The improvisational qualities detected in his music will influence and inspire the real time decisions of the dancers and musicians.

I’M EATING MOVIESMAP Fund Application Proposal

I’m Eating Movies will be an evening-length work that is inspired by the startling juxtapositions that people witness as they watch others’ lives intersect. This piece brings people-watching to a new level by developing the people’s background and future - the aspects of their lives that are usually unknown to the public eye. What brought these people to this place? And what will they be doing as soon as they step off the train? Within the imagination of the viewer, anything is possible.

FOR GLENN GOULDDance Theater Workshop Commission, January 2011

Inspired by the two radically contrasting recordings that Glenn Gould made of Bach’s Goldberg Variations, the first in 1964 and the second in 1981 a few weeks before his death, Andrea Miller brings her newest work, to the stage.

WHAT WAS LEFT BEHIND

SIX POINTS FELLOWSHIPIt has been a long-standing interest of Andrea Miller to connect her work to her heritage. The Six Points Fellowship was designed to allow artists to express Jewishness in their work and immerse them in a community of Jewish artists and artist-mentors over a two-year period. It is encouraged that artists take the whole grant period to workshop and polish their work before presenting it -- a luxury that is not afforded to most New York City-based artists either for lack of funding or because they are creating with a close deadline approaching.

After receiving feedback on a rejected application, Andrea Miller intends to reapply during their next funding cycle for this two-year $40,000 creative grant.

NYFA BUILD GRANTDesigned to provide support for General Operating Expenses for mid-sized companies, receiving a NYFA BUILD Grant was an important goal for Gallim Dance. In 2008, the company submitted its first application and was denied, receiving feedback that there wasn’t enough past grant history to instill confidence in the panel that the company was mature enough to continue growing at the pace that would benefit from a BUILD grant.

In 2009, NYFA lacked the funding to have a second BUILD Grant cycle. Gallim Dance submitted a second application in 2010, but was unable to even be considered for the funding since our budget exceeded the maximum limit of a mid-sized company.

CADMAN ARTS PROJECT (CAP)Beginning in September, 2009, Gallim Dance created a proposal for partnership with Cadman Memorial Congregational Church to develop a community arts program which would focus on growing participation in Church activities by promoting quality arts training for under-served youth, and providing a home base for Gallim Dance operations. After months of conversation and negotiation, the initiative was abandoned when it became clear that the monetary needs of the Church exceeded the capacity of Gallim Dance.

The company continues to pursue any opportunities that will help establish Gallim Dance in the community and allow for the development of an outreach program spearheaded by the company, while simultaneously providing a permanent home for the company.

STRATEGIC PLANS 2011RECRUITMENT OF NEW GENERAL MANAGER

The rapid artistic growth of the company during the last two years has been paralleled by an increase in the demands on Gallim’s burgeoning administration. Lack of funds precluded the hiring of additional senior staff, so, as a temporary measure, Irena Tocino has been the acting Executive Director. It is apparent that Gallim Dance has reached a level where it is imperative to find a professional, full time Executive Director to oversee operations and to bring Gallim Dance to its next phase as a mature arts organization.

At the same time, current Company Manager Chelsea Goding has expressed her intention to shift her professional focus and be involved in Gallim Dance as a part time consultant while pursuing other interests.

A new General Manager has just been recruited to bridge the positions and responsibilities currently held by the Executive Director and the Company Manager until a full time Executive Director can be included on budget.

RESIDENCY AT THE JCC IN MANHATTANGallim Dance will be in residence at the JCC in Manhattan, three days per week, from January to December 2011. This will give the company the space and time to create a new work and cultivate its New York City audience by hosting events and showings at the JCC.

It is a long-standing goal of the company to find a permanent home. While this residency does not provide full-time space for administration and dancers, it does help us establish a more fixed presence in the community.

STRATEGIC PLANNINGAs a result of meetings lead by Michael Kaiser at the Kennedy Center Institute for Arts Management in early October, Gallim has begun a methodical, stage-by-stage process of strategic planning with the purpose of emerging as an stronger, mature arts organization better prepared to respond to the needs of the present while assuring a promising future as a major international dance company.

We began by re-examining and articulating the mission of Gallim, and we are currently at phase II, which is conducting an external analysis of the industry and an internal analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of our organization with a look at implementing those changes that will position Gallim for a bright future. This initiative will be spearheaded by Kennedy Center Fellow Marte Siebenhard and under the auspices of the DeVoss Institute of Arts Management.

FULLY ELECTRONIC OPERATIONSIn an effort to be more “green,” Gallim will move toward using solely paperless marketing and advertising tools. An electronic press kit and promotional DVD with all of the company information and intro video will be the two main results of this change.

BOARD DEVELOPMENTUntil now, Gallim has counted on a limited number of board members who have been extremely supportive of Gallim, providing innumerable hours of work, in-kind donations and advice. It is imperative for Gallim to now constitute a board whose members are committed to ensuring the financial viability of the company by their own financial support as well as the securing of additional corporate and individual funds, the opening of doors to foundations, commercial work and other opportunities. Gallim looks to the board for overall advice and the professional expertise of its members.

FUNDING AND DEVELOPMENT CHANGES FOR BUDGET GROWTHWe hope to create an aggressive funding strategy so we increase our contributed income totals for 2011 by 52%. These funds will not only prompt the fulfillment of our other pressing needs, but will hopefully lead to a 49% increase in our total year-end budget, as well.

DANCER CONTRACTSAs a result of the engagements that were on the horizon, Gallim Dance was able to offer our dancers reliable employment and payment from September 2010 to February 2011 in the form of our first contract. Our goal is to be able to offer them yearly 40-week contracts that are not so contingent upon a pre-established touring schedule. This would lead to the cultivation of a different company culture -- one that is primarily based on artistic exploration, contribution, and development.

PERMANENT HOMEThe need for a permanent home is one of our most glaring needs as we approach 2011. Strategically, an exclusive space for office and artistic operations would help reinforce a financial foundation, but also provide enough stability for the company to expand its mission and fulfill its vision for provoking meaningful community participation.

STANDARD OPERATING SOFTWAREThe addition of a comprehensive software to track and facilitate our day-to-day workings becomes increasingly necessary as we negotiate the exponential growth of the company with a limited and decentralized staff structure.

GREEN MARKETING MATERIALSGallim Dance’s visual materials are often lauded as extremely high-quality and polished. In an effort to consolidate our costs and maintain our aesthetic reputation, we need to develop a pre-packaged set of materials that is both flexible enough to modify as we feel the need to change it, and environmentally sound enough to not create waste every time the content of those materials is outdated.

EXPANDED MISSIONDue to the size of Gallim Dance and our operational capacity, we have been forced to abandon some of the goals that are important to the company in order to realistically fulfill our mission. While community outreach and collaboration are implicit interests, we look forward to being responsible for integrating these goals into our operations by explicitly stating them in our mission.

Gallim Dance was thrilled to have German photographer Franziska Strauss accompany them during many tours and residencies in 2010. These pages highlight just some of the beautiful photographs she has taken for the company.
