1 INTRODUCTION
Hyder Consulting (UK) Limited (HCL) was instructed by the Canal & River Trust (CRT) ‘the
Client’ in October 2012 to undertake a site investigation at Garden Wood Embankment, Dutton.
The purpose of the investigation was to provide information on the underlying ground conditions
to assist others in the design of remediation measures for the recent canal embankment breach.
This ground investigation report details the scope of the works and provides a factual account of
the fieldwork undertaken, the strata encountered, in situ testing and the subsequent
geotechnical testing undertaken on samples obtained during the ground investigation.

1.5 Site Location and Description
The site is situated approximately 8km North-west of Northwich town centre. The National Grid
Reference (NGR) of the site is SJ 58901 77545.
The site comprised a section of the Trent & Mersey Canal known as Garden Wood
Embankment. The embankment had suffered a major breach in early October 2012 which
resulted in the failure of the southern face of the embankment and associated loss of the
towpath and a significant volume of the embankment structure and canal water in to the fields
below.
The site is centralised at the canal embankment breach and includes the surrounding fields and
associated tow path. The site is bound by agricultural fields to the northeast and southwest with
the continuation of the Trent & Mersey Canal to the northwest and southeast. As a result of the
breach, a significant volume of embankment material had been washed out and settled over the
fields below.
A site location plan is presented in Figure 1.
1.6 Geology
The published geological map incorporating the site, British Geological Survey Sheet 97
Runcorn (Solid) (Ref. 1) and British Geological Survey Sheet 97 Runcorn (Drift) (Ref. 2), shows
the bedrock geology underlying the site to comprise deposits of the Triassic, Mercia Mudstone
Group. The Preston Brook Fault passes through the site in a northwest/southeast direction with
the downthrow of the fault towards the southwest.
The superficial geology underlying the site comprises of Alluvium to the southwest of Preston
Brook Fault. These deposits are detailed as clay, silt and sand. To the northeast of the fault the
site comprises of Glacial Sand and Gravel.

2 STANDARD PROCEDURES
2.1 Investigative Procedures
All ground investigation fieldwork and laboratory testing was carried out in accordance with the
recommendations of BS5930-A2 ‘Code of Practice for Site Investigation’ (Ref. 3), BS10175
‘Investigation of Potentially Contaminated Sites: Code of Practice’ (Ref. 4).
2.2 Routine Sampling
Representative bulk samples of all strata encountered were recovered as part of the works.
These samples were taken in line with the recommendations of BS5930:1999 ‘Code of Practice
for Site Investigation’ (Ref. 3) and were stored in sealed plastic bags following logging by a
suitably qualified and experienced Geotechnical Engineer, ahead of subsequent laboratory
testing.
A HCL approved Geotechnical Engineer logged all exploratory holes in accordance with the
recommended procedures provided within:
• BS EN ISO 14688-1:2002 Geotechnical investigation and testing – Identification and
Classification of soil – Part 1: Identification and Description (Ref. 5); and
• BS EN ISO 14688-2:2004 Geotechnical investigation and testing – Identification and
Classification of soil – Part 2: Principles for a classification (Ref. 6)
2.3 In Situ Testing
All in situ testing was carried out in accordance with BS EN ISO22475-1:2006 Geotechnical
investigation and testing - Sampling methods and groundwater measurements (Ref. 7), EN
ISO22476-2:2005 Geotechnical Investigation and Testing – Field Testing (Ref. 8).
2.4 Groundwater
Where groundwater was encountered, measurements and samples were taken in accordance
with BS EN ISO22475-1:2006 Geotechnical investigation and testing - Sampling methods and
groundwater measurements (Ref. 7). Groundwater conditions observed in boreholes are those
appertaining to the period of the investigation. It should be noted that groundwater levels may
be subject to diurnal, seasonal, and climatic variations and are solely dependent on the time the
ground investigation was carried out and the weather before and during the investigation.
2.5 Buried Services
Throughout the works the Hyder Common Operating Practice ‘COP SA 1’ – Service Clearance,
was adhered to. This document details the methods and safe working practices used to
undertake excavations safely. Prior to breaking ground, services plans are consulted and the
area scanned using a Cable Avoidance Tool (CAT) with detected signals marked on the ground.
Hand excavated inspection pits are completed to 1.20m bgl prior to the use of drilling and boring
plant.
In addition to inspection pits for each of the investigation positions, a single additional hand
excavated inspection pit was completed along the towpath of the Trent & Mersey Canal to
positively identify a known buried fibre-optic service.

3 FIELDWORK
3.1 Site Works
The scoping of the ground investigation including location and depth of boreholes was
undertaken by CRT, site supervision and geotechnical logging of the samples was carried out
by HCL.
The ground investigation works were conducted along the towpath of the Trent & Mersey Canal,
the agricultural field adjacent to the canal and in the agricultural field at the toe of the
embankment.
Access to the investigation positions along the tow path was gained through a gated access
point at bridge no. 213. Access to the agricultural field adjacent to the canal was via a field
boundary gate and access to the agricultural field at the toe of the embankment was via
Meadow View Farm and across adjacent fields. This agricultural field was extremely saturated
and boggy at the time of the investigation and placed limitations upon the preferred location of
the exploratory Borehole located within this area.
An exploratory hole location plan is presented in Figure 2.
3.1.1 Cable Percussive Borehole
A single cable percussive borehole (BH1) was completed using a Dando 2000 Cable Tool
drilling rig. The borehole was positioned within the field at the toe of the embankment.
The bore hole commenced drilling from ground level and terminated at 13.00m bgl due to
refusal within the rock strata. In situ standard penetration testing was undertaken during boring.
Completed geotechnical engineering logs are presented in Appendix A.
3.1.2 Windowless Sample Holes
Three windowless sample holes were carried out during the site investigation using a Dando
Terrier percussive drilling rig.
Table 2.1 details the final depths attained within the windowless sample holes as specified by
CRT. Completed geotechnical engineering logs are presented in Appendix A.
All windowless sample holes commenced with hand excavated inspection pits to 1.20m bgl to
clear the location of buried services and advanced using percussive techniques.

3.2 Exploratory Hole Locations
The exploratory hole locations were set out by HCL and surveyed by a HCL Surveyor to an
accuracy of 0.01m. An exploratory hole location plan is presented in Figure 2 with the
corresponding borehole logs presented within Appendix A.
3.3 Specific Sampling
Bulk and disturbed samples for the purpose of geotechnical testing were taken in the borehole
and windowless sample holes.
3.4 Installations / Backfilling
No monitoring wells were installed during the ground investigation. Each position was backfilled
using bentonite pellets.
