Following the 3 Steps of Impromptu Speaking…
by me :)
What can we prepare?
Thesis statement of an essay Conciseness
fancy words jargon SAT words
70%, 30%
Step#1:Figure out the Main Idea ASAP
Branches? factual evidence (data, statistics) analogies (if they seem fit) anecdote
Gather sub-ideas into groups don’t get too petty with details progress from one branch to another
Step#2:Branch Out
Always open & end on a strong note! First impression
Step#3:Opening & Closing
Disclaimers “My topic is really boring..” “I’m not prepared for this ㅠㅠ " “I’m sorry!”
DON’T EVER APOLOGIZE ON THE PODIUM (unless you swear by accident)
Bad Opening Exam-ples
Catchy, arousing interest “I came to a shocking conclusion.” “This was one topic that was really in-
teresting.” Try not to talk about the “topic.” Don’t read out your topic. Try other
ways to introduce the topic/POV.
Good Opening Exam-ples
Sample Topic: Should we provide support to North Korean defec-
tors?
A simple “say what you said” is fine But to go one step further,
a meaningful sentence—the final touch
