The Harker Heights Chamber of Commerce members received some insider knowledge about Fort Hood at a luncheon Thursday. Col. Matt Elledge, Fort Hood garrison commander, briefed about 60 local business representatives and Harker Heights officials about the effects of military downsizing.
“Yes, we are reducing, but we are not reducing as much as everyone else,” Elledge said. Most installations are looking at a 14 percent cut. Fort Hood is looking at a 7 to 8 percent loss, he said. That translates to about 2,900 soldiers and 198 civilian positions by at least 2017, leaving the post with about 38,000 soldiers.
Once infrastructure projects are finished, such as the new Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center, new construction is not anticipated until military funding issues are resolved. The installation, which partners with surrounding communities, recently started to work with Killeen to see what services may be duplicated.

Happy New Year! May 2014 bring you all good health and much happiness!
One chapter in my life closes this month and a new one opens. As most of you already know, I submitted my retirement letter to the board and my last official day with the chamber will be Friday, January 31, 2014.
As I look over my 15 years at the chamber, I have seen a lot of changes, not only in the chamber, but also in the City of Harker Heights. We have been a combined effort of good city government, good leaders and a great city manager heading all the phases of our wonderful city.
I am very thankful for all of the chairpersons of the board, board members, ambassadors, committee chairs and the many volunteers (past and present in all of these categories) who made my job a very rewarding experience and a fantastic time in my life.
I look over the new projects we started, and the chamber growth over the years, and am very proud of our many accomplishments, i.e., Vision XXI, Food, Wine and Brew Festival, Coffee Connection, Military Affairs, leadership development course, etc. These are just a few that will be a good foundation for future growth. I feel that I leave the chamber with a wonderful staff and financially strong.
Thank you all for a great opportunity to serve you. Behind every successful person is a whole list of remarkable people who have made it all possible. You all made my job an amazing experience and an exciting chapter in my life. I shall miss working with the chamber staff, the chamber members, the city and the Fort Hood community. I sadly retire from my job, but know the chamber will continue to grow.
Mary and I plan to stay in Harker Heights because “it’s right in the middle of where we want to be!”
Thanks again and may God bless you all!
