“Hell in a Box”
3D Architecture in Motion
“There is an eternal landscape, a
geography of the soul; we search for its outlines all our lives.”
Hell in a Box is a further progression of my new attained knowledge in the subject of Set Design, Film and Image Projection. This project has been largely inspired by the work of Ken Adam but also by the amazing Matte Painting Techniques, which played main role in my previous assignment.
Throughout this project I wish to engage both my architectural (design) and visual skills (film, photography, image manipulation). My goal is to make a strong statement that those two areas: FILM and ARCHITECTURE co-‐exist and work together successfully.
I have read and analyzed the book "The Third Policeman" by Flynn O'Brien. I have identified the spaces and produced a map of the narrative's landscape. After choosing three different locations for my sets I began hand drawing and making collages in Photoshop of the settings. Next step would be to finalize my drawings and transfer them into 3d Models which I would then; one: animate in Artlantis Studio 3 and two: make a physical model and use projection and filming techniques to produce a story.
Mr. Jarvis House
My initial ideas are to crate three different sets:
SET 1: The Old Mather’s House
SET 2: The Police Barracks (the exterior of the building)
SET 3: The Landscape from Chapter 5 (bushes with hidden parts of the bike)
By the end of this week I am planning to have my models ready for the transformation into a real scaled sets, which will then give me the possibility to work with projection, film and general manipulation and experimentation at the studio.
MY IDEAS OF THE SPACE PRESENTATION TO THE AUDIENCE:
THE AUDIENCE will never see the main character / the narrator of the story. The narrator has NO IDENTITY; at times he is not even sure if he is alive or not? He took over the identity of the people and spaces around him, just like the bikes became
humanized.
Instead the viewer would be guided through his vision / his point of perspective through the spaces. When appropriate his shadow will be visible to show his presence. Also a model of a bike will play an important role in the final presentation. At the moment I am working on making a mechanism, which will provide motion to the object.
I am also planning to work further with the map of the book's landscape. I intend to transform the map into an interactive plan of the narrator’s journey. By doing so I will allow my audience the possibility of a reciprocal action with the designed sets as well as give them a spatial understanding of the plot. This would be done with Apple Motion Software, which I am learning at present.
Portfolio Presentation:
1. Book outlining the development of the project. 2. DVD with Model Animations. 3. Map of the Set.
