his dear Ravi I have your l e t t e r of t h e 16th M a r c h . I am glad you
have been f rank wi th me as t o say that you had f e l t ve ry much
t h a t you did not come back and work wi th me. I am so r ry you
t h i n k I have judged your ' e x - p a r t e . ' In a way, i t may be
t r u e , and, having been here f o r a year, I am b e g i n n i n g t o see
t h i n g s in a b e t t e r l i g h t . I t i s such a p i t y t h a t camerdar ie
has not been developed as i t should be among our IFS o f f i c e r s .
I hope it w i l l come wi th working t o g e t h e r more. I t i s very
impor tan t that our Foreign S e r v i c e should c o n s i s t of men
who will t h i n k of t h e country f i r s t and l a s t . We c a r r y a
great burden and my experience f o r one year has not been a l l
the best. I know you were in great sympathy with the Indo¬
n e s i a n n a t i o n a l movement and I know t h e r e g a r d wi th which you
a r e he ld by the highest i n t h e land h e r e . I hope you w i l l be
satisfied if I say that I now understand you fully and I wish you
further success i n your s e r v i c e to our mother land .
Mrs Subbarayan i s a l i t t l e b e t t e r now though t h e
h u m i d i t y in t h e c l imate i s a l l against h e r . Ka l iu rang i s
too far away and i t means she w i l l have t o be away from me
fo r c o n s i d e r a b l e t ime . Dr. Hatta has c e r t a i n l y been most
kind and I enjoy meeting him and I know, as you say, he w i l l
help me in every way; so i s Mrs Rahim, but Mr. Rahim has now
l e f t Jogjakarta as he has taken over t he t r a n s p o r t s e r v i c e
and i s mos t ly at D j a k a r t a .
I know the Indonesian a t h l e t e s were rather d i s a p p o i n t e d
a t t h e i r performance in t h e Asian games, b u t , as our Prime
M i n i s t e r h imsel f remarked, i t i s not v i c t o r y i n t h e s e games
that counts but r e a l l y the f r i e n d s h i p you make the atmos¬
phere in wh ich you live in during t hese games, which fosters good¬
will among n a t i o n s . I t h i n k t hey enjoyed t h e m s e l v e s from
t h i s po in t of v iew. . I have n o t , a s y e t , seen H.H. Paku Alam
s i n c e he r e t u r n e d . But I am s u r e he w i l l g ive a good account
of h i s s t a y in India when I meet him. I am glade he made a g r e a t . . .
