AMBASSADOR EMBASSY OF INDIA DJAKARTA INDONESIA 29th March, 1951. his dear Ravi I have your letter of the 16th March. I am glad you have been frank with me as to say that you had felt very much t h a t you did not come back and work with me. I am sorry you think I have judged your 'ex-parte.' In a way, i t may be true, and, having been here for a year, I am beginning to see things in a better light. It is such a pity that camerdarie has not been developed as it should be among our IFS officers. I hope it w i l l come with working together more. It is very important that our Foreign Service should consist of men who will think of the country first and last. We carry a great burden and my experience for one year has not been all the best. I know you were in great sympathy with the Indo¬ nesian national movement and I know the regard with which you are held by the highest in the land here. I hope you w i l l be satisfied if I say that I now understand you fully and I wish you further success in your service to our motherland. Mrs Subbarayan i s a l i t t l e b e t t e r now t h o u g h t h e humidity in the climate is all against her. Kaliurang is too far away and i t means she will have to be away from me for considerable time. Dr. Hatta has certainly been most kind and I enjoy meeting him and I know, as you say, he w i l l help me in every way; so i s Mrs Rahim, but Mr. Rahim h a s now left Jogjakarta as he has taken over the transport service and is mostly at Djakarta. I know the Indonesian athletes were rather disappointed at their performance in the Asian games, b u t , as our Prime Minister himself remarked, it is not victory in these games that counts but really the friendship you make the atmos¬ phere in which you live in during t hese games, which fosters good¬ will among nations. I think they enjoyed themselves from this point of view.. I have n o t , a s y e t , seen H.H. Paku Alam since he returned. But I am sure he will give a good account of his stay in India when I meet him. I am glade he made a great...
