Introduction
• 1800
Đất ngập nước trên thế giới
• 3.4 million Km2 (Matthews, 1990) . 5.3 million Km2 (matthews and fung, 1987) to 8.6 million Km2 (Maltby and Turner, 1983)
History and Wetland
• Babylonians, Egyptians, Aztec phát triển hệ thống cấp nước liên quan tới đất ngập nước.
• Chicago, Washington.
New orlrans, và J.F.kennedy in New York trước đây là những vùng ngập nước.
Châu âu : The Camargue
Atchafalaya Basin in Louisiana

Vùng đất ngập nước (ngọt) : Herman Kurz (1928), A.P. Dachnowski-Stokes(1935), R.L. Lindeman (1941;1942)...
Vùng ven biển và ngập mặn: Valentine J. Chapman (1938;1940), John Henry Davis (1940;1943), John M. Teal (1958;1962), Lawrence R. Pomeroy ( 1959)...

Định nghĩa đất ngập nước
Now, what exactly is a wetland?
Is that the same as a swamp?
• Chịu ảnh hưởng của cả hai hệ thống khô, nước.• Sinh vật thích nghi với điều kiện khô và ẩm ướt.• Khác nhau về kích thước• Vị trí phân bố• Sự tác động của con người• “wetlands are a half-way world between terrestrial and
aquatic ecosystems and exhibit some of the characteristics of each” (R.L. Smith. 19980)
Định nghĩa chính thức
The term “wetlands”... Refers to lowlands convered with shallow and sometimes temporary or intermittent waters. They are referred to by such names as marshes, swamps, bogs, wet meadows, potholes, slough, and river-overflow lands. Shallow lakes and ponds, usually with emergent vegetation as a conspicuous feature, are included in the definition, but the permanent water areas that are so temporary as to have litter or no effect on the development of moist-soil vegetation. (Shaw and Fredine, 1956)
U.S. Definition- Circular 39
- Được bao phủ bởi nước liên tục hay tạm thời- Marshes, swamps, bogs, wet meadow (đồng cỏ ẩm ướt),
potholoes(Lỗ), slough (vũng lầy), và vùng ven sông.
Wetlands are lands transitional between terrestrial and aquatic systems where the water table is usually at or near the surface or the land is covered by shallow water...wetlands must have one or more of the following three attributes: at least periodically, the land supports predominantly hydrophytes, the substrate is nonsoil and is saturated with water or covered by shallow water at some time during the growing season of the each year.
(Cowardin et al.,1979)
U.S Scientific definition- Fish and Wildlife Service
Wetland is defined as land having the water table at, near, or above the land surface or which is saturated for a long enough period to promote wetland or aquatic processes as indicated by hydric soils, hydrophytic vegetation, and various kinds of biological activity which are adapted to the wet environment. (Tarnocai, 1979)
Canadian Wetland Definition
Areas of marsh, fen, peatland or water, whether natural or artificial, permanent or temporary, with water that is static or flowing, fresh, brackish, or salt including areas of marine water, the depth of which at low tide does not exceed 6 meters.(Navid, 1989; Finlayson and Moser, 1991)
The International Definition
- Marsh, fen, peatland, or water, tự nhiên hay nhân tạo, thường xuyên hay tạm thời, nước tĩnh hoặc nước chảy, ngọt, lợ hay ven biển.
Legal Definitions
The term “wetlands’ means those areas that are inundate or saturated by surface or ground water at a frequency and duration sufficient to support, and under normal circumstances do support , a prevalence of vegetation typically adapted for life in saturated soil conditions. Wetlands generally include swamps, marshes, bogs, and similar areas. (33 CFR328.3(b); 1984)
