PG. 2 NOVEMBER 3, 2019
In this month of November, when we honor the saints and remember our deceased loved ones, let us give
thanks to God for the gift of eternal life and pray that we might live our lives in such a way as to be truly
identified as belonging to Christ. St. Teresa of Kolkata wrote and displayed this exhortation to her
sisters in Kolkata.
These words of
St. Teresa must
have been part of
her lived experi-
ence. And they
were certainly a
part of the lived
experience of her sisters working
among the poor. I can testify to the
fact that it is also the lived experience
of the pastoral team and staff of Holy
Spirit Parish living and working in this
community of Lawrence County. We
are truly blessed to have many sup-
portive, holy, and kind parishion-
ers. People who volunteer to help and
are very gracious and welcoming to
others. But we are also plagued with
a small group of people who attack
and verbally abuse the pastoral team,
staff, and other parishioners.
I guess this is to be expected in a broken world with broken people. But none the less, when it occurs, it is
shocking and disheartening. Christ’s parting words to his disciples were words of encouragement and
hope. He said, “You will have trouble in the world, but take courage, I have conquered the world.” –John
16:33 Strengthened by Christ our Savior, we persevere. In his beautiful words of the Beatitudes, Jesus calls
us to rejoice when we are abused, slandered and mistreated for the sake of His Name. And so we do! Realiz-
ing that we have been called to serve Him and to please Him.
I have a sign in my office that reads, “I may not know the secret to success, but I know that
the secret to failure is trying to please everyone.” Keeping the main thing the main thing is
striving to please Christ and serve His people given our resources and circumstances. We
thank all of you who are sincerely working, praying, and striving to do the same. We also,
according to the command of Christ, pray for those who are not. May Christ intervene in
their lives and hearts.
God love you,

NEVER GIVE UP!
Discipleship is an unusual undertaking: the better you become at it, the more difficult and challenging it will be. Be a disciple anyway; never give up!
The people you are called to serve may be unlikable, ungrateful, and unimpressed by your dedication; Love and serve them anyway; never give up!
If you do good, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives; Do good anyway; never give up!
The good you do for Christ will be forgotten tomorrow; Do good anyway; never give up!
Honesty, humility and simplicity will make you vulnerable; Be honest, humble, and simple anyway; never give up!
What you spend years building may seem insignificant in the eyes of others; Build anyway; never give up!
People really need help, but may attack you if you help them; Help them anyway; never give up!
Give the world the best you have, and you may get kicked in the teeth; Give the world your best anyway; never give up!

Over the last several weeks I have been asked about the income results of our August Parish Festival. First, my apologies for the delay in reporting this information. We have been waiting on some final invoices, which have recently been received. We wanted to provide complete and accurate numbers without having to go back several times and provide revisions. The Festival Committee will be meeting this week to review the final festival income and expenses. We hope to provide in next week’s bulletin the final numbers for the festival. Additionally, we are hoping to soon report on the income and expenses from the Fall Craft Show and the Oktoberfest. I would like to underscore the fact that ALL the fundraising proceeds STAY here at the parish. They do not go to the diocese. In fact, fundraising proceeds have been
designated to be used for St. Vitus School, the Faith Formation Program, Youth Ministry and Social Ministry. We appreciate your patience as we work on finalizing our income numbers. You may have noticed at some of our sites the new “Holy Spirit Parish” signs have been going up. Presently they are up at St. Anthony, St. Camillus, St. James and St. Vincent de Paul. We hope to have the remaining ones placed soon. When we began placing the new signs, we found out we needed to apply and pay for special permits for some of them due to their locations. The total cost was $250.00. We have now obtained all the necessary permits and are able to proceed in placing the remaining signs. As the saying goes, “nothing is ever easy!” With the cooler temperatures moving in, we have now begun heating buildings. I know when I start up my furnace at home for the first time, I anxiously wait to see if it is going to work properly. Imagine doing
the same thing with the many heating systems in all our buildings. I have been receiving inquiries as to why the heat has not been turned on at St. Joseph’s. It has been turned on, and we have come to discover an issue with the heating system there. A service call has been placed to check out the system, and thus hopefully the system issues will be resolved by this weekend. We apologize for any inconvenience. We work very hard to insure all heating and cooling systems are properly maintained and in good working order. However, due to the age and vintage of some of the systems we have, chances are they will fail on occasion. Blessings to you and yours. God love you,
Deacon John

PG. 6 NOVEMBER 3, 2019 Evangelization & Music
This past October was designated as a time for us to remem-ber to respect life, all life, not only the lives of the unborn, but for
everyone given the opportunity to enter this
world. The indelible gift of human dignity is meant for every soul, no matter what crime that person has committed. It is important to remember that every Saint has a past and every sinner has a future.
Last week, Dr. Harry Dudley gave an informative presentation about the need for ministering to people who have been incarcerated. We often think the only person who needs help is the one behind bars, but prison ministry is so much more than that. The children and spouses left behind are in desperate need of a loving hand to help them cope with the incarceration of their loved one. This may mean helping them through their loneliness or help-ing them find a way to put food on their tables and pay their rent. There is also a great ministerial need to help the one who is imprisoned to reintegrate into public society after they have served their time in prison. So often when they leave the jail, the only thing they own are the clothes on their back and they have no transportation or place to live.
Right here in New Castle we have a medium-security jail for female and male adult inmates
that houses up to 275 prisoners. Prison ministry is an awesome opportunity for evangelization. We currently have less than a handful of parishioners providing prison ministry. Our pastoral care minis-ter, Sr. Barbara Ann Johnston, is one of them. She has been ministering to the inmates at this jail for 18 years and she needs help.
Dr. Dudley shared valuable information about the Catholic Prison Ministries
Coalition. You can find it online at catholicpris-onministries.org. This site provides necessary infor-mation you need to understand Prison Ministry. There are free webinars and training, resources, Pen Pal Program, and so much more. Please visit the online site to see how you can become involved in Prison Ministry. For more information contact Dr. Dudley at [email protected] and Sr. Barbara Ann Johnston at [email protected].
Organ or Liver? By Vicki Onufrak, guest columnist
When I think about my ministry of
nearly a half century serving Holy
Mother Church as an organist, I feel
very blessed. Despite dealing with all
the changes over the years, it has truly
been a rewarding experience. It hasn’t
always been easy, but the Lord, our dear Blessed
Mother, and St. Cecelia have been my constant helpers.
They’ve guided me with tender, loving care and at
times have given me a dose of comic relief when things
would get a bit stressful.
Like the time—this is a true story!—a gentleman called
the church to ask if we had any use for an organ that he
was trying to get rid of. He thought it would be nice to
donate it to a church. So I went to check it out.
That evening as my boys and I sat down to dinner, I
thought I’d tell them about my day, just for some con-
versation at the dinner table. I began like this, “I had a
phone call today from some guy who wanted to donate
an organ to the church.” Little did I realize the words
“donate an organ” would conjure up in their minds the
image of a body part. With no clue that my sons and I
were on two different wave lengths, I proceeded to
describe the “organ.” It belonged to this guy’s father
who had passed away a couple years ago, but was
surprisingly in good condition being it had sat in an
abandoned home for some time. There was quite a bit
of dust on it but that wouldn’t be a problem. It would
probably need some repairs but what the heck, it was
free, and maybe someone at the church could use it.
There was utter silence from my boys
throughout this bizarre description of a
human body part. Suddenly my older
son, eyes popping out of his head,
looked intently at me and said, “A
LIVER??!! At which point, I burst into
uncontrollable laughter for fifteen
minutes before I could explain that the “organ” I had
described was a musical instrument.
We’ve all said at one time or another that God has a
sense of humor. Isn’t that the truth! I’ve told this story
countless times over the years and I still chuckle.
Thanks be to God for the gift of laughter. I hope when
you see me at the organ you’ll think of this story and
it’ll put a big smile on your face!

Stewardship requires us to be serious about being a good citizen
Where do you live? I live in North Carolina. There I pay taxes, own a home, and belong to a parish. North Carolina is in the United States, so I also abide by federal laws, pay taxes, and vote for candidates in all sorts of elections. I identify as an American and try my best to meet certain expectations placed on me by the government, state, and fellow Americans. I do certain things because of my identity.
Paul wrote to the Philippians, “Our citizenship is in heaven.” Being a U.S. citizen living in North Carolina places certain requirements on me. How many of us “citizens of heaven” take seriously the expectations and require-ments of “that” citizenship? Sometimes we act like nothing is truly required of us.
We are called to follow the laws of the land we live in on this earth, but we are also called to adhere to an even greater authority. Whether it be our call to act with charity and love or to follow the precepts of the Church, we must take seriously our status as citizen.
People have given their very lives so that we may have to freedom to be citizens of our country and our state. Of course, many people have died for the citizenship of heaven as well. So it comes down to the question, who are you and to whom do you belong? —Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS

Pink Tea gathering hears amazing story
On Oct 26, about 75 women (and a few men) gathered for a dynamic speaker on Breast Cancer awareness. Dazzling us with her beautiful pink dress and vibrant personality, Amy Warner shared two breast cancer journeys, hers and her daugh-ter's She shared videos of her daughter doing what she loved most, bicycling, and sharing tough life decisions that had to be made quickly. Her hope was to inspire people to keep fighting and live a full life. Listening to how her daughter biked 12 miles to and from treatment during Vermont's winter (yes, bikes can have snow tires!!) for 81 of her 84 treatments was incredible!
We thank her for her delightful and energetic talk. We also thank all the women who donated wonder-ful breakfast casseroles for the brunch. No one walked away hungry. Rounding out the event was our Carnival table of snacks: funnel cakes, cotton candy, soft pretzels to name a few. Many donated gifts were given away. The event ended with a prayer service remembering all those whose names were placed on the memorial table.

Holy Spirit Parish Funeral Ministry: Journeying Through Grief
As Holy Spirit Parish, we are united in assisting parishion-
ers and their loved ones who experience the death of a fam-
ily member or friend. To help them handle new emotions
and loss, the parish provides a series of four books over
time called Journeying Through Grief.
As of this date, there are now 67 families receiving the
Journeying Through Grief books as they progress through
their first year following the loss of a loved one.
Using materials supplied by the parish, 15 parishioners
have volunteered to send out these books. Each volunteer is
assigned to one family according to a prescribed schedule.
They may also be assigned new families as the need arises.
If you are interested in the ministry and learning how you
may be of help, contact Mary Ann Isaac, Holy Spirit Parish
Social Minister, at [email protected].
As Veterans’ Day comes, remember local services are

looking for help, you will need to bring in the Veteran’s
DD-214. The Courthouse is located at 430 Court St in
New Castle. Services include pension/compensation,
death benefits, health benefits, education benefits, PA
benefits, obtaining forms, home buying and improve-
ments help. They also have Outreach and Involvement
programs. The Lawrence County website is

From the Parish Chaplain, Father Molka Hello everyone. I want to thank all of you for your support for my Ministry to the Sick. Your prayers and encouraging words mean a lot to me. I am doing my best to meet the needs of all the residents in our 12 Nursing Homes in New Castle and Lawrence County as well the Catholic Patients at UPMC Jameson Hospital. I have been asked to make a schedule change for my weekday Mass on Thursdays at Quality Life Services (Golden Hill). We are trying
to spread out the number of weeks in each month that the clergy (myself and a Protestant Minister) will be there for Mass or Services. My schedule tends to be more flexible to accomplish this. This change will provide the best spiritual care, and will benefit all Christians of various denominations. Therefore I have agreed to move my Thursday Mass to the THIRD Thursday of every month, starting November 21st and December19th. This routine will continue into the New Year 2020. I am happy to do this for our friends.
I also want to thank the Women of Faith for their commitment to attend a daily Mass with me and the residents in our nursing homes. Their voices and prayers mean a lot to the residents. God bless all of you and please follow my daily Mass schedule in the Sunday Bulletin. PS: Remember to make your religion known when you happen to be admitted to UPMC Jameson Hospital!!
