Margaret A. Gilliam Institute for Global Food Security
At a special announcement today on McGill University's Macdonald Campus, PrincipalSuzanne Fortier announced a landmark gift of $5million to the Institute of Global Food Security from McGillalumna Margaret A. Gilliam, BSc'59. The Institute has been named in Ms. Gilliam's honour. In addition to creating an endowment to support the Institute’s long-term growth and stability, Gilliam’s giftwill fund Graduate Student bursaries, internships, and field studies and a Consultancy Hub in Global FoodSecurity. The Hub will allow the Institute to expand its reach and enable it to develop partnerships with otherworld-class institutions, solidifying its position as an essential participant in global policy-making forums. Every night, some 800 million people on ourplanet go to bed hungry. After a decade ofprogress, the number of malnourished has nowrisen for four straight years. Here in Canada, 1.7million households experience some level of foodinsecurity. Graduate students Luna Sousa, NnediNnebe (pictured), BSc(AgEnvSc)’14, MSc’16 andLoloah Chamoun, BSc(FSc)’15 at McGill’sInstitute for Global Food Security are working tounderstand malnutrition, to stamp out hunger, andto change lives.
