The COA online scholarship applica on deadline for 2012‐2013 academic year is February 1, 2012 (for incoming freshmen and current students). Study Abroad Study Abroad ‐ Encourage your students to apply! Students can s ll apply for our Semester, Summer, and Maymester programs. The COA winter and spring break op ons are full at this me. During Maymester, our students can study in one of the follwing countries: Chi‐na, Costa Rica, Ireland/England/Wales, Romania, Ukraine, England, and Italy. Our Summer programs range from eight to ten weeks and students have the ability to study in Honduras, Taiwan or France. There are many op ons available for students who would like the oppor‐tunity to study for a semester and countries represented.

As you plan ahead for your spring courses, I would like to remind you that the Student Bill of Rights requires that all faculty provide a syllabus for their students. The syllabus is a great way for you to offer an overview of class expecta ons to your students. Purdue has technologies to make it possible for faculty to communicate or engage with students in case of unexpected emergencies that

affect the campus. Planning ahead of me is crucial to ensuring con nuity of your courses through an emergency. It’s important to

recognize that in the event of an emergency, just as at any other me, University policies regarding privacy and confiden al data must

s ll be observed. The easiest and most effec ve way to be prepared for an emergency is to set up a Course Email list for your class at

the beginning of the semester. It will automa cally create an email list that enrolls students and will be ready for you to use when need‐

ed to email informa on to your class. Get started with the Course Email List tool here:

Good prepara on at the beginning of a semester would also include pu ng your course materials and grades in Blackboard and provid‐

ing instruc ons to your students on how to access them. Uploading your presenta ons and notes at the beginning of the semester en‐

sures that students will have access to all relevant course work if an emergency should occur. Uploading your syllabus would be an easy

first step. Quizzes and assignments can be created, distributed, and collected through Blackboard as well. Get started with Blackboard

Faculty who wish to give presenta ons or have student groups work synchronously could plan to use Adobe Connect. Using audio or

video through Connect or another video broadcas ng applica on is also a possibility. Faculty may hold live text or audio chat sessions via

Adobe Connect or other readily available, free chat applica ons, such as Skype. Get started with Adobe Connect here:

If there is a campus emergency, it is likely faculty will be working from home or another remote loca on. They will need a rela vely

current computer with a broadband connec on, such as DSL or cable, and microphone or webcam if they want to broadcast or record

audio or video. Because faculty may need access to other resources, such as files that are kept on their office computer, they should

know how to access them ahead of me. Local IT can assist with this need. The key to being prepared for class con nuity in the event of

a campus emergency is planning ahead and familiarizing yourself and your students ahead of me with the procedures and technolo‐

gies that might be used. Your local IT staff and ITaP are available to assist in your planning. Please contact ITaP at [email protected] any

The Indiana Academy of Science encourages abstracts and tles from field scien sts, academic scien sts, industry scien‐sts, science educators, graduate students, undergraduate students, and other researchers whose work is of scien fic

interest to the membership. The following provides details regarding guidelines for Paper and Poster submission for the 127th Annual Academy Mee ng, March 10, 2012. Abstract uploading and Mee ng registra on will be available begin‐ning January 1, 2012.

For ques ons please contact your Sec on Chair (name and contact informa on to be found at www.indianaacademyofscience.org), or the Academy: [email protected] . Abstracts will be printed in the Program Book for the Annual Academy Mee ng.

ORAL PRESENTATIONS

Criteria The research must be new and of sufficient scien fic importance. Science presenters must be members of the Indiana Academy of Science. To register membership or renew your mem‐bership for 2012, go to h p://www.indianaacademyofscience.org.

All science presenters must register for the Annual Mee ng and pay the Annual Mee ng registra on fee. Oral Presenta ons will take place on Saturday March 10, 2012 (See the tenta ve Program Agenda), and should be pre‐sented within a 12 minute me limit. A 3 minute Q&A will follow each presenta on.

Technical Requirements Abstracts must be submi ed on the on‐line submission form which includes tle, first author's name, address, and email address, as well as co‐author names, addresses, and email addresses. Abstracts submi ed are limited to 300 words (not including the tle or author names).

A single individual may submit only one abstract as the first author. It is assumed that this individual will make the presenta on.
