city officials agreeable, the mu­nicipal bureau of welfare tonight was designated by the war council as the agency to care for children of working mothers.

I t will not be an easy matter , George M. Wicker, council presi­dent, pointed out. for the present number of 1,000 such children may be increased considerably in the months ahead. I t is hoped the pro­gram can become operative in June.

Tentative plan is to petition the federal government to meet half the cost, through Lanham Act pro­visions, and have the benefitted families pay the balance—about $3 a child.

Huck Geary's Loss Holding Pirates Back, Swfys Frisch

Pi t tsburgh Pirates are t rying to roll uphill in the National League with one cylinder missing. The phantom piston is a certain Eugene Francis (Huck) Geary, who has become known as the myth from Minneapolis.

The Pira tes gave up two good players, Stu Martin and Arne An­derson, to get Geary out of the American Association in the mid­dle of last summer and since then he has played sixteen games—ten a t intervals last autumn and six this spring. But F rank Frisch, the old Fordham Flash, who manages the Pirates, says Geary still is his regular shortstop.

"Geary Is a s t range case, '" Frisch said, "but he has shown me enough to know tha t he is a good player and if we can ever get him in the lineup a t short regularly I think our infield will be fixed.**

This may be true, but Frisch ad-} mitted ruefully tha t he had no idea when Geary would be able to play.

The 26-year-old infielder was spiked by Eddie Stanky of the Cubs in the opening game of the season at Chicago and has been limping around ever since. Last summer Geary thought he had stomach ulcers, but they turned out to be imaginary. There was

defense job, but he changed his mind in time to report to the Pi­rates on their last day in training camp at Muncie, Ind.

He was fifteen or twenty pounds overweight, but the Buccaneers needed him and Frisch put him in the lineup right away and had him play in every exhibition game right up to opening day.

"And tha t ' s when ball players get hurt—when they a re not in shape," commented Frisch.

Geary's absence has made it nec­essary for F rank Gustine to han­dle the shortstopping in spite of the fact tha t he, too, is injured. I t even caused Frisch to use Catcher Al Lopez at third base one day in order to move Bob Elliott to short and relieve Gustine.

All of this has caused rival clubs in the National League consider­able merriment. The Cubs, who now have Stu Martin, say tha t Pi t tsburgh gave up two better ball players when they got Geary.

We asked Frisch if he would make the same deal over again. He pondered a moment before answer­ing, "well, I don't know."
