ny Sydjysk Servo Spang Sønderborg
in 1951.
his expectations were met already
within the same year, when the com-
pany was assigned to supply the
automation for a new co-operative
dairy that was being built in Søn-
derborg. This assignment came to
set off a rapid growth, which led to
a restructuring of the company in
1958: - now a limited liability com-
pany named Servodan a/S.
Things have gone well for Ser-
vodan. The company has gained
a solid position in the market for
its key products: lighting control,
announciating systems and electric
automation. Today, Servodan is a
medium-sized, international trading
and production company with head-
quarters in Sønderborg, in the south
of jutland, and a part-production

day/night switches have the advantage over time switches in that they react to the light level, not the time. This means that day/night switches always switch on the lighting when it is needed, and at the same lux level, regardless of whether it is winter or summer.
a day/night switch with an inte-grated clock for switching on/off of lighting during the night/early morning is also available.
as the graph shows, daylight conditions change from day to day. The advantage of the day/night switch is that if the need arises for light in the daytime hours, it will switch on the lights.

18-093 has the facility for night blocking, which can be easily set via the display.
Control type �8-092The “small” model, type 18-092, is incredibly easy to use. The desired on value from 3-300 lux is set using the button on the pro-duct – that’s all there is to it…a little Led on the front of the product makes it easy to check the setting, as it switches on when the measured lux level is the same as or lower than the preset value.
The day/night switches now have a significantly improved set of
contacts, which cope with a grea-ter load, so in most cases you do not need a contactor.The biggest visible change is in the physical size of the modules: they have now been reduced to 17.5 mm modules and are now class i.The 18-092 uses a separate light sensor type 43-196, which is designed for outdoor installation (ip 54).
Control type �8-093This control has more options for individual settings, not only for on and off values; the 18-093 also has the option of night blocking, so that you can switch off the light for a specific period, e.g. during the night. This represents a useful energy-saving option.

Sensors for lighting controlSensors are a very important ele-ment of a lighting control system, as they are the components that register a signal and convert it into a control signal, thus activating the system.
Make the right choice!There are many kinds of sensors to choose from, and you must there-fore make sure that the sensor you choose satisfies your requirements and needs. Some types can be used inside and outside, while other types should be used indoors.
you often need several types of sensors for the same control.
Movement sensorsa movement sensor switches on the lights when it detects movement and a temperature change of ±5°c. Movement sensors are called pir sensors (passive infrared).

PIR
a normal occupancy sensor is faced with a number of problems. in an office you will not only find noise signals (air flows, seasonal temperature changes), but the im-precise detection of passers by or moving of furniture can also disrupt the function.
The occupancy sensor processes every sound signal and learns it. The result is an “install it and forget about it” sensor, which creates a solution without any need for sub-sequent adjustment.
PIR: Immunityto noise signalsinfrared detection works by iden-tifying body heat when a person passes through beams created by a lens. The sensitivity is greatest to movement at right angles to the beams. The infrared sensor is im-mune to air flows, but its sensitivity decreases with distance and can be blocked by furniture and parti-tions.
Ultrasound: High sensi-tivity and rangeultrasound has an excellent detec-tion range and is most sensitive to movement towards the sensor. The high-frequency sound fills the room and provides excellent sensitivity to small movements (pc work).
PIR + Ultrasound:The best of both worldsThe combination of infrared and ultrasound technologies makes occupancy sensors immune to air flows thanks to infrared technol-ogy, and very sensitive as a result of ultrasound technology.Minilux combines the best of both detection technologies.

if the customer does not quote a standard colour code, we cannoT guarantee to produce the same colour for a repeat order. The customer should therefore buy extra units for any subsequent replacement.
If the building’s colour scheme has to be implemented in full, or if you want to match existing col-ours, the solution is a special coat of paint for the sensors.
“We offer to paint sensors in pre-cisely the colour that the customer wants, and the delivery time is relatively short. all we need is the number and finish of the colour (raL and ncS) or a colour sample from the ceiling or wall,” says Tom petersen, Quality manager at Ser-vodan.
The painting is undertaken at a professional painting shop, and ini-tially the customer receives a single colour sample (painted sensor) so that he can check and approve the colour. The whole order is then painted and will usually be ready within 14 days.
The latest examples of buildings with painted sensors include the Technical university of denmark (dTu) in Lundtofte.
“The building was designed by the c.F. Møller firm of architects, and our assignment was to make sure that the ceiling installations matched the black ceiling,” explains senior fitter jens jørgen olsen from the electrical installation company Lind-pro a/S in glostrup.
“The sensors were installed on two floors, and there is in general a high level of satisfaction with the result. Thanks to the short delivery time, the painting process didn’t cause any delays to the schedule,” says jens jørgen olsen.
Blue, green and red sensorsServodan has also painted large batches of sensors in colours to match the architecture of a number of older buildings.
“We recently received an order for yellow and green sensors, which was produced on the basis of colour samples from the building in ques-tion,” says Tom petersen.

Why use large arm movements– when small ones are enough!The movement sensor for the automa-tic switching on/off of indoor light uses “small movement” technology, so that small movements, down to 10 cm, keep the light switched on.
Energy saving is the top priority The sensor is designed with a view to optimal energy saving. The light can be switched off by pressing a push button when you leave the room (energy saving push button).
if you forget to switch off manually, the light will be switched off after the preset delay. if there is a need for the light to be switched on or off constantly, this is done from the same push button.

The sensor 41-262 has a built-in light sensor which prevents the lights being switched on in the daylight hours. if you connect more than one movement sensor, only one of them must have the built-in light sensor connected.
For optimum lighting control out-doors, the light sensor should face north-east. it is therefore possible to fit a separate light sensor in-stead of the built-in light sensor.
a separate light sensor is also neces-sary if the position of the pir sensor (e.g. under an overhang, in a carport etc.) requires a low lux setting.
Installation of PIR sensorMovement sensors must be installed at a height of 2 to 2.5 meters to have maximum range.

The placing of movement sensors is very important with regard to their proper function.passive infra-red (pir) sensors are based on a passive technology, i.e. the sensors do not emit any signals, but »sense« what is happening in the area. Two conditions must be fulfilled before the sensors are activated:
1. They must sense heat radiation (from an object)2. They must register movement.

Before Installationpay special attention to the location of air conditioning/heating vents before mounting. The sensor(s) must be located at least 1 m from vents to avoid air current interference, which drastically reduces ultrasonic range and may cause false triggering.
Masking the Infrared lens With certain installations it will be necessary to constrain the infrared coverage with a mask.This prevents false turn-ons that can occur when the infrared pattern ex-tends out of doorways into corridors.
The mask kit has three masks to choose from.
�. Conference room maskWhen mounting in the sensor in the center of a large rectangular room, the conference room mask should adequately constrain the infrared pattern. This mask is used when a Minilux dT-a is mounted in the center of a long rec- tangular room (i.e. con-ference rooms). The mask provides a more rectangular infrared pattern and prevents any spillage out doorways at the sides of the room.
2. �80° maskWhen the sensor is installed inside the threshold of a doorway you must prevent the infrared coverage from spilling into the adjacent corridor.
3. Cutout mask (individual)This mask is scored on the inside so it is easy to achieve the perfect mask for any application. Simply trim away the sections where coverage is necessary and leave the portions where you want to prevent coverage.

43-�9X light sensors Choice of systemServodan’s light sensors are specified for and adapted to individual sys-tems, so the crucial choice is mostly a matter of the lux range. our light sensor have a lux range of 3...60 klux. This means that the lux settings can be very accurate.
Choice of lux rangeThe lux range you choose depends on whether you want to control indoor or outdoor lighting.
Lux range above 2000 LuxFor control of indoor lighting.The daylight coming in through win-dows normally has to exceed 10,000 Lux before there is enough light in the room and one can switch off the artificial lighting.
Lux range below 2000 LuxFor control of outdoor lighting if the daylight has reached a lux value of 15-45 Lux, you can switch off the lighting.
Placement of the light sensor for indoor lighting controlcorrect placing of the light sensor is essential to secure optimum control of the lighting.
SidelightWith incoming side light, the light sensor must be placed so that it »sees« the incoming light. When there are curtains or sunblinds in the window, the sensor must be placed behind these.
NB!When sensors are placed outside, there is no compensation for reduced incoming daylight caused by curtains/sunblinds. if the sensor is placed on a building, account must be taken of the shading effects on the sensor.
With daylight coming in from several sides, the light sensor must be placed at a technically neutral place as to light.

Minilux control combines several func-tions in one single module. The unit is set via a display. used for both outdoor and indoor light control.
Control 36-080The Minilux control is not only easy to set; it also has two functions to choose between: outdoors and indoors.
For both the outdoor and indoor func-tions, the light will be automatically switched on when the movement or presence sensor detects movement, but onLy if there is not enough daylight.
With the outdoor function the light will not switch off until the timedelay has expired.
With the indoor function the light will switch off as soon as there is sufficient daylight.
SettingsThe preferred values are set via the dis-play and the push buttons on the front. you can select the lux range for the light sensor, switch on/off values, cutout delay and test mode. you can also read the current light level on the display.

Just step inside and the light is switched onKeeping all the lights on at full power in long corridors is an expensive business, especially if there is no one there to ben-efit from it.
The whole corridor is monitored by movement sensors. So the light is switched on when someone moves in the sensor range, and will be switched off shortly after the last movement. This saves energy. if you want the lights to be switched on before you step into the
corridor, you can combine the sensors with a low-voltage push button switch.

Lighting control in sport centre with movement sensors
at the entrance door the hall manage-ment have chosen to have the light activated by a push button switch before you go into the hall. as long as there is any activity (movement in the area) the lights will remain on.
The light is switched off automatically after the last movement - in this case twenty minutes afterwards. The cut-out delay can be set from 3 to 30 minutes depending on the level of activity in the hall.
if constant lighting is required - for
example during repairs or cleaning - the control unit can be supplied with a push button switch.

On a staircase you only need the lights on some of the time

Zone �The light sensor is installed as close as possible to the incoming day-light. This provides a large, dynamic measurement surface with accurate measurement of actual daylight – with no disruptive elements. in Zone 1 the daylight factor is high. daylight often supplies sufficient light, so there is rarely a need here to switch on lamp fittings during the daytime. Servodan Luxstat control takes care of cutting off the ballast, in order to maximise energy savings.
Zone 2in Zone 2 the daylight factor is lower, as the zone is further away from the incoming daylight. The sensor’s light measurement is corrected by the daylight factor, and Luxstat control correctly adjusts the dimming level in accordance with the desired light level.
Zone 3in Zone 3 the daylight factor is even lower, and the lighting becomes cor-respondingly brighter.
What is zone control?Zone control means dividing the lighting into several zones so as to exploit the extra daylight that comes in through the windows.
Zone control is mainly used to control indoor lighting.
Choice of systemThe system you should choose depends on the supply of daylight to the rooms and your lighting requirements. it is therefore important to consider whether particular workplaces or kinds of pro-duction make special demands on the lighting. you should also determine how the existing installations are split up into zones so any changes can be allowed for.
Open-LoopWith Servodan Luxstat control and the unique open-Loop photometry opera-ting principle you can divide the room into up to three zones, where the lighting is adapted to the daylight.
instead of measuring the light inside the room, the sensor measures the actual daylight coming into the room. during installation the light is measured at reference points at user height for each of the three zones. The result is keyed
into Servodan Luxstat control, which automatically calculates a daylight factor for each zone.
The open-Loop photometry operating principle prevents the light control from responding inappropriately to changes in the room. For example, the lighting is never dimmed, even if people at a meet-ing bring along a large whiteboard. The system can thus display great sensitivity to changes in the daylight.

Regulation optionsgreat technological progress has been achieved in the field of light sources and regulation fittings and accessories. The main issues nowadays are whether light sources can be regulated, and what effect regulation has on the lifetime, out-put and colour reproduction of the light source concerned.
