TIPS TO FINDING A JOB
Whether it is a part-time position while attending college or a full-time position, adhere to the rules below. It does make a difference!! Employers responding to a survey said more than half of their hiring managers said the most common and most detrimental mistakes made include:
Dressing inappropriately for the interview
Speaking negatively about a prior employer
Appearing disinterested
Appearing arrogant
Being non-specific in answering questions Not asking good questions CareerBuilders.com’s Rosemary Haefner, Vice President of Human Resources, said successful candidates:
Do their homework, researching the company and what it does.
Don’t get too personal; keep the interview professional and don’t share unnecessary personal information.
Be honest and outline steps you would take to find answers to questions you can’t immediately answer.
Be ready to answer open-ended questions such as “Tell me about yourself;” “Why do you want to work here;” or “
What motivates you.”
Don’t be negative about previous jobs or employers no matter how much the interviewer pushes for negative responses. Generate a positive attitude. If you would like assistance on interviewing skills, interviewing questions or assistance with a resume, stop in the EGCC Career Services Office and see Judy Miller, Director of Career Services and Alumni. STUDENT PANEL DISCUSSION – STEUBENVILLE HIGH SCHOOL
The College Bound Preparatory Program Representatives (Angela Kirtdoll-Suggs and Gene Gillison) extends
congratulations and a “hardy well-done” to Frank Mioduszewski, Dorothy Collins and the following Eastern Gateway
Community College students: Brittany Arkley, Carol Canyock, Tom Costantini, Charles Daniels, Jamar Harvey,
William Howell, Richard Jackson and Judith Roemer. Angela Kirtdoll-Suggs was the Moderator.
These students recently participated in a panel discussion at Steubenville High School and were magnificent according to
Lee Gillison, Director of Guidance. He said they gave some very insightful information pertaining to their preparation for
college or lack thereof. A major difference they noted in high school and college is the need to study, study and study,
he said.
One of our students piqued the interest of the high school students when it was stated that although she was an
honor student in high school and an honor student in college, she regretted enrolling first at a four-year school rather than
a two-year one right after graduating high school. She subsequently transferred from the four-year college to
Eastern Gateway Community College after one-year and is consequently enjoying her college experience much more.
The College Bound Preparatory Program is sponsored by Eastern Gateway Community College. The primary focus is to
“CREATE A COLLEGE GOING CULTURE” in grades k-12, within the school systems in Jefferson and Harrison
Counties.
The next “Student Panel Discussion” will be held at Buckeye Local High School on April 5, 2011.
Many of the above students will be participating. Other EGCC students interested in becoming a panelist should
contact Frank Mioduszewski at telephone extension 162.
It is the policy of Eastern Gateway Community College to recognize our outstanding employees who exemplify behaviors reflective of the core values, customer service initiative, and quality work. However, we need your help to do so. Do you know an EGCC employee that deserves to be Employee of the Month? If your answer is yes, please take the time to nominate this person. Just pick up a nomination form from Administrative Services in room 2625 or in Frank Mioduszewski’s Office. The completed form gets returned to Administrative Services. Thank you!
