Deepening Our Impact Welcome Letter from YES Leadership

Dear Friends, Since our founding in 1968, YES has been filling a unique niche for Boston’s urban youth. As we have grown over the last 45 years, our programs have expanded to meet the needs of our neighborhoods and its youth. Now more than ever, Boston children and teens can benefit from out of school programming that engages them in the outdoors and provides challenging leadership opportunities. Throughout this Annual Impact Report you will see evidence of our successes in 2012, none of which would be possible without your support as a donor, volunteer, family, or program partner.

YES has made its name as a trusted youth program provider in the community. We have collaborated with over 100 schools, community agencies, and youth groups across the City of Boston. Notable partnerships in 2012 included expanded targeted outreach to low income communities through Boston’s Center for Youth & Families, connections to elite athletes through the T2 Foundation, and new programs in partnership with New England Disabled Sports. The organization also has rapidly rising visibility within Boston philanthropic communities. Over the past year we have received tremendous support and have delivered great value to the numerous foundations, corporations and individuals that support us. We were one of the first adopters of The Boston Foundation's Giving Common in 2012; and, we have been recognized by our auditors for keeping our overhead low, as 76 cents of every dollar contributed goes directly to supports our youth.

In line with our strategic plan, we reorganized YES’s program continuum in three tiers to better highlight offerings for YES youth as they grow and develop:

In Tier One, YES youth have the chance to experience something new through our Operation SnowSports or Outdoor Adventure programming. Youth can learn to ski, snowboard, kayak, rock climb, hike, run, fish, sail or mountain bike with YES, often for the very first time.

In Tier Two, youth participate in five or more YES activities and build confidence in themselves through solidifying new skills. Youth experience deeper personal growth through sustained and/or seasonal participation in YES’s Operation SnowSports and Outdoor Adventure programs, such as the Track & Field program and the YES Ski & Snowboard Team.

In Tier Three, our highest impact programs create pathways to leadership. Tier Three programs include Junior Volunteers, Career Exploration Program, and Girls Outdoor Adventure Leaders.

As youth rise through our three-tiered programming, they experience the outdoors, build confidence, and become “life long” leaders.

We are proud of the positive impact YES has on Boston’s youth and look forward to the year ahead. Thank you for your continued support.

With appreciation,

Richard Ward Bryan Van Dorpe President, Board of Directors Executive Director

YES Financial Update

Pathway to Success Fifteen-year-old Kaya is a Boston Public School student who started with YES in 2007 through the Operation SnowSports program. Kaya took the next step of her YES experience in 2012 by enrolling in the YES Academy’s Career Exploration Program.

As a student in the Career Exploration Program, Kaya says, “I learned about competition in the modern job market. YES helped me to get ahead of the game.” She says the skills learned in the program, like resume writing, professionalism and customer service, will give her an edge over her peers when seeking jobs in the future.

“My favorite part about the Career Exploration Program was the sense of camaraderie and family that developed among the group,” she says. Rachada Hiranyaket, the YES Academy Director and teacher of the Career Exploration Program, was a “great mentor.” She notes how the development of these close relationships “made the learning at YES more fun and comfortable.”

Following 12 weeks of classes and a week-long internship at YES, students in the Career Exploration Program interview for different summer job placements. Following this process, Kaya was invited to work at KNF&T Staffing Group for the summer.

Joe Howard, a long-time YES Volunteer and Kaya’s supervisor at KNF&T, praised Kaya’s work ethic and attention to detail. She put the 21st century skills she learned in the Career Exploration Program to good use while working as a Recruiting Assistant at KNF&T. “Kaya was able take our direction and complete ANY task given in a timely and accurate manner. She was always on time, worked hard, and always wanted to learn more!” The staff at KNF&T were so impressed with Kaya, they invited her back to work there this winter over her holiday break.

Kaya is grateful for the supportive learning environment at YES and the “valuable real-world skills” she gained by participating in the Career Exploration Program. We are excited to see where Kaya takes her professional skills, work ethic and confidence in the future!

“YES helped me to get ahead of the game.”
