1.0 SUBJECT

Fire-retardant-treated Wood Shakes and Shingles.

2.0 DESCRIPTION

2.1 General:

The fire-retardant-treated wood shakes and shingles areproduced from No. 1 grade western red cedar shakes orshingles complying with UBC Standard 15-3 or 15-4. Shakethickness is 1/2 inch (12.7 mm) or greater. The shakes andshingles, having a maximum moisture content of 20 percent,are pressure-treated by FSR Treatment, Inc., with WhiteMountain Building Products LLC proprietary fire-retardantchemical. Treated shakes and shingles are labeled as “ClassB” or “Class C.”

2.2 Installation:

2.2.1 Class B Roof Covering: Products labeled as “ClassB” are installed on minimum 15/32-inch-thick (11.9 mm) solidsheathing or spaced sheathing complying with the code. Theshakes and shingles must be installed in accordance withTable 15-B-2 of the 1997 Uniform Building Code™ (UBC)except that for shakes, one layer of Type 30 underlaymentmust be installed over the eaves in addition to theinterlayment of Type 30 felt between courses. Valley flashingmust comply with Section 1508.5 of the UBC, and otherflashing must comply with Section 1509. Maximum weatherexposure of the shakes must not exceed those exposureslisted in Table 15-C of the UBC. Weather exposure of hipsand ridges must not exceed those exposures permitted for thefield of the roof. Starter courses at the eave are doubled.Fifteen-inch (381 mm) or 18-inch (457 mm) shakes orshingles may be used for the starter and final course at theridge. See Figure 1 for typical installation details.

2.2.2 Class C Roof Covering: Shakes labeled as “Class C”are installed as noted in Section 2.2.1 for Class B roofcovering shakes.

2.2.3 Class A Roof Covering: Products labeled as “ClassB” are installed as described for Class B roof covering inSection 2.2.1 of this report, except that the sheathing iscovered with one layer of Type G3 mineral-surfaced capsheet having a nominal weight of 76 pounds per square (3.71kg/m2) and complying with UL Standard 55-A.

2.3 Identification:

Bundles of treated wood shakes and shingles bear two labels.The first label notes the mill, the shake grading agency andcompliance with UBC Standard 15-3 or 15-4. The secondlabel bears the FSR Treatment Inc. name and address, theproduct name, the name of the inspection agency (QualityAuditing Institute), the fire classification and the evaluationreport number (ER-5327). Labels for “Class B” shakes areprinted with red ink and labels for “Class C” shakes areprinted with blue ink. See Figure 2 for treater labels.

3.0 EVIDENCE SUBMITTED

Report of testing in accordance with the ICC-ES AcceptanceCriteria for Fire-retardant-treated Wood Roof Systems(AC107), dated September 1997, including reports ofweathering tests of Class B shakes and shingles over spacedand solid decks after one-, two-, three- and five-yearexposure; results of audit of the treatment facility; a qualitycontrol manual; and installation instructions.

4.0 FINDINGS

That the fire-retardant-treated wood shakes and shinglesdescribed in this report comply with the 1997 UniformBuilding Code™ (UBC), subject to the followingconditions:

4.1 The shakes are treated, identified and installed inaccordance with this report.

4.2 The shakes are pressure-treated by FSR TreatmentInc. in Maple Ridge, British Columbia, Canada,under a quality control program with inspections byQuality Auditing Institute (AA-635) for both shakeand shingle products.

4.3 Reports of successful completion of weatheringtests in accordance with Class B requirements ofUBC Standard 15-2, conducted after ten years ofexposure, are submitted.

This report is subject to re-examination in two years.
