HOW CAN ONE CHART the emerging Portuguese architec-
tural practices? To start with, it is not an easy task to pin
down what is happening among the new generation of archi-
tects in Portugal. That which is still latent cannot be clearly
discerned. Moreover, given the strong legacy of Portuguese
architecture, they remain, to a degree, unnoticed within the
discipline. This oversight may be intentional or uninten-
tional, as it may be the product of either a stern resistance
to change or merely casual disregard. The truth is that we
can examine the new Portuguese architectural practices as
a critical and creative reflection of a particular state of af-
fairs. The reasons for these more or less conscious reactions
must be sought in four distinct but complementary areas:
changes in the disciplinary conditions of Portuguese archi-
tecture, transformations of the territorial conditions in Por-
tugal, changes in the national production conditions and a
shift in the professional conditions of Portuguese architects.
Firstly, the disciplinary conditions of Portuguese architec-
ture have changed. If Portuguese architecture to date has
represented itself through the idea of identity, fundamen-
tally convergent and coherent, at the cost of suppressing
marginal disciplinary activity, this ideological framework is
clearly in question today. The meta-narrative of Portuguese
HOGYAN LEHET FELTÉRKÉPEZNI az új portugál irányzato-
kat?
Emellett a portugál építészet erôs tradíciója miatt bizonyos
fokig észrevétlenek maradnak a szakmában.
Elôször is, a portugál építészet diszciplináris körülményei
A portugál építészet meta-narratívája, mely kulturális alap-
jaira és történelmi jelentôségére épült, jelenleg széttöredez-

architecture, which built up its cultural basis and historical
significance, is now in a process of fragmentation, implod-
ing in multiple differentiated micro-narratives, structurally
unpredictable and inconsistent. In this sense, the emerging
practices mark the breakdown and dissipation of the identi-
ties that have sustained the disciplinary specificity of Portu-
guese architecture, which are now being superseded by a
foundation of multiplicity. In fact, the emergence of a plural-
ity of new architectural proposals which cannot be subsumed
into the dominant disciplinary order is a direct and explicit
result of the contemporary cultural reality. Not only are the
recent formative dislocation and the new practices of mo-
bility widespread among students and young architects, but
knowledge of the discipline has acquired a global scale and
dissemination by a variety of physical and virtual media. The
new architectural practices are the result of a new dynamic
produced by the multiple connections and relations, local
and global, material and immaterial, conceptual and formal,
which form a freer and broader network of contacts and in-
fluences. The emerging practices are therefore more specific
and individualized, demonstrating that it is impossible, or
even irrelevant, to think about contemporary architectural
practice outside this irreversible universe of contamination
and hybridization. From the participatory low-tech approach-
es of MOOV, Kaputt!, or Plano B, through the ironic contex-
tualized objects of Arquitectos Anónimos and AUZprojekt, to
the pragmatically experimental projects of Ateliermob and
Extrastudio, Portuguese architecture is undergoing a process
of intensive pluralization, which is the natural consequence
of its contemporary existential condition.
Secondly, transformations are taking place in the territo-
rial conditions in Portugal. Taking into account the devasta-
ni látszik, számos különbözô mikro-narratívákra robbanva
szét, melyek szerkezetileg kiszámíthatatlanok és következet-
lenek. Ebben az értelemben az új irányzatok jelölik annak az
identitásnak végét és szétforgácsolódását, amely fenntartot-
ta a portugál építészet diszciplináris sajátosságát, és amelyet
jelenleg egy alapvetô sokféleség helyettesít. Valójában az új,
sokféle építészeti felvetéseknek a megjelenése, amelyeket

tion of the landscape witnessed in recent decades, it seems
that no emancipating and rehabilitating disciplinary inter-
vention remains that can give meaning back to the Portu-
guese landscape. The manifestation of Portuguese identity is
no longer restrained to the fragmented memory that remains
in the countryside, or to the enclaves of urban modernity in
the metropolitan areas, but is an all-embracing, constructed
reality that spreads over the whole territory but which, para-
doxically, retains some specifically Portuguese traces. These
can be found in empty historical centres, in extensive hous-
ing on the peripheries of towns, in the continuous massive
construction along the coast and in the informal urbanization
of the rural countryside. The new architectural practices are
those that have to reconcile themselves definitively with the
fact that the Portuguese architecture has lost its specific ter-
ritory, or better, a certain idyllic idea of territory. Without
the stability of this sedimentary place to accommodate the
project, other strategies must be explored to maintain the
slightest residue of architecture’s transformative and sig-
nificant power. That is why the new practices no longer at-
tempt to escape from the violent and intense shock of reality.
They confront it positively, without rejecting or ignoring the
existing reality. In fact, the emerging practices adopt more
creative and purposeful strategies, seeking an effective re-
sponse to a specific situation. The new architectural prac-
tices face reality from a more relational perspective, either
by constructing a critical dialogue between the object and
its surroundings, as is the case of Arquitectos Anónimos and
AUZprojekt, or a planned reinvention of an existing context,
as with Ateliermob and Extrastudio, or even a temporary ac-
társ építészet tendenciáit ennek a visszafordíthatatlan keve-
következménye a jelenlegi valós körülményeknek.
Másodsorban, Portugália területi körülményei átalakuló-
ban vannak. A táj elmúlt évtizedekben bekövetkezett pusz-
tításait figyelembe véve úgy tûnik, nem marad olyan felsza-
badító és helyreállító beavatkozás, mely visszaadhatná a por-
tugál táj jelentését. A portugál identitás megjelenése töb-
kiterjedt külvárosi lakóterületeken, a folytonos tengerpar-

tivation of public space, as MOOV, Kaputt! and dass have
done.
Thirdly, the national production conditions have changed.
With the expansion of market logic in recent decades, Portu-
guese architecture has seen its current relation to the public
gyelmen kívül hagynák a meglévô valóságot.
válasz a meglévô szituációra. Az új építészeti tendenciák egy
sokkal inkább összefüggést keresô aspektusból közelítenek a
Kaputt! és a dass esetében láthattuk.
Harmadik tényezôként, a nemzeti termelési körülmények
megváltoztak. Az utóbbi évtizedek piaci elveinek elterjedé-
sével a portugál építészet a köztulajdonnal való modern kap-
csolatát javíthatatlanul gyengébbnek érzi. Az igazság az,
hogy a szerzôi építészetben egyre kisebb megkülönbözteté-
sek vannak a megbízások (közösségi vs. magán), megbízók
(intézményi vs. vállalati) és épületek (kulturális vs. kereske-
delmi) típusai között. Másfelôl a közösségi megbízások rit-
kulása egyenesen arányos a magánvállalkozások növekedé-

domain irreparably weakened. The truth is that in the field
of author architecture there are increasing fewer distinctions
between types of commission (public vs. private), types of
client (institutional vs. corporate) or types of building (cul-
tural vs. commercial). On the other hand, the growing scar-
city of public commissions has been directly proportional to
the explosion of private enterprise, that with rare exceptions
continue to extensively build on the territory employing triv-
ialized models controlled by over-bureaucratised planning.
If the recognized architects are reorienting their activity to
the new challenges of the market economy, mainly public
works with an institutional and cultural impact, and new
private typologies for the corporate and tourist enterprise,
the vast majority of young architects are restrained to the
field of indiscriminate construction or some small singular
works. Symptomatically, apart from the major real estate op-
erations, this new generation of Portuguese Architects is the
first that cannot develop their careers by participation in Por-
tuguese public tenders. To start with, the leap outside they
have taken to participate in international public competitions
and cultural events, ambiguously motivated both by will and
necessity, has allowed research and recognition that would
be difficult to achieve inside the country. This unfavourable
context has forced emerging practices to commit themselves
and creatively develop new activities, strategies and projects
in areas normally discharged or left unexplored on the mar-
gins of the discipline. Alternative practices emerge, more in-
terventional and demanding, that follow critical approaches
to contemporary existential conditions, away from the hori-
zon of the common commission. The clearest result of this
is the way the architect’s spectrum of action has broadened,
crossing the affirmative with the critical, the spatial with the
szének tevékenysége a válogatás nélkül történô építkezések-

vate or public commissions, as has been done by Atelier-
mob, Extrastudio, Arquitectos Anónimos, AUZprojekt and
Atelier Data; creative investment in relevant international
competitions, in the case of Ateliermob, MOOV, Atelier Data,
Kaputt! and On-Office; pragmatic research into production
processes, more computational in José Pedro Sousa/ReD,
more technical in Extrastudio, more environmental in Plano
B; participation in transdisciplinary ephemeral urban events,
as with MOOV, Kaputt!, Ateliermob, dass and Plano B; the
architectural involvement in contexts of humanitarian cri-
sis of Filipe Balestra; and even pure experimental research
by Augmented Architectures and A|um. All these activities
demonstrate that the relationship of young architects with
reality is undergoing a process of diversification of activities
and pluralization of strategies, as an affirmative way to over-
come the current limitation of access to traditional private
and public commissions.
Fourthly, there has been a shift in the professional condi-
tions of Portuguese architects. In recent years architects have
had to assimilate the processes of the democratisation of the
profession, with a consequent increase in competitiveness
between each other. The exponential increase in the number
of architects, accompanied by an unequal access to the labour
market, can be seen in the recent escalation of professional
tensions. There are also differences in access to media space
between established and emerging architects, further wid-
ening the gap between the generations. This dramatic situa-
tion necessarily leads to a redefinition of a young architect’s
professional strategies. The professional situation of new

kritikai megközelítést követô, a közösségi megbízásoktól tá-
vol lévô alternatív irányzatok tûnnek fel, sokkal inkább be-
avatkozóbb és igényesebb hozzáállással. A legszembetûnôbb
eredmény az építészeti tevékenység spektrumának tágulá-
sa, keresztezvén a ténymegállapítót a kritikai szemlélettel,
a térbelit a performatívval. A kis magán vagy közmegbízá-
sokban tett kísérletezés, ahogyan az Ateliermob, Extrastudio,
Arquitectos Anónimos, AUZprojekt és Atelier Data esetében;
Ateliermob, MOOV, Atelier Data, Kaputt! és On-Office ese-
teiben; a produktív folyamatok kreatív fejlesztései, számító-
a fiatal építészek valósággal lévô kapcsolata olyan folyama-
a stratégiák különbözôségét eredményezi, mintegy annak a
megerôsítéseként, hogy képes úrrá lenni a hagyományos ma-
gán és közmegbízások jelenlegi korlátozott hozzáférésébôl
következô hátrányán.
Negyedik tényezôként, a portugál építészek szakmai kö-
rülményeiben is történtek változások. Az elmúlt években a
szakma demokratizálásának folyamatait kellett elfogadni-

practices encourages hybrid working structures, more adapt-
able and flexible, and also involves the creation of interactive
and dynamic networks, implying a generalised criticism of
the traditional author architect as individual creator. This is
reflected in changes in how offices are structured, almost all
of them taking the form of collectives, and in the develop-
ment of strategic collaborations, crossing multiple disciplin-
ary fields and interests, from design to urbanism, from social
sciences to technology research. On the other hand, young
offices have developed new means of communication and of
exposing their work, exploring new openings in media space.
They use new computer platforms, easily accessible and with
a widespread range, from websites to blogs, where they can
develop alternative practices of (self) displaying their work
and intensify the debate of ideas. In short, emerging practic-
es are redefining their forms of organization, communication
strategies and intervention programs and questioning the
traditional professional boundaries. In organizational terms,
MOOV has pushed the idea of interdisciplinarity to the limit,
responding to projects not only through the diversification of
interventions, which include architectural projects, concep-
uk, miközben a köztük lévô verseny folyamatosan növeke-
dik. Az építészek számának exponenciális növekedése és a
munkaerôpiachoz való egyenlôtlen hozzáférés okolható a
dák szakmai helyzete a hibrid munka szervezôdését erôsíti,
sokkal alkalmazkodóbb és rugalmasabb, és egyben interaktív
és dinamikus hálózatok létrejöttét vetíti elôre, átfogó kritikát
magában foglalva a tradicionális szerzôi építész, mint egyéni
alkotó fogalmára. Ez érhetô tetten az irodai szerkezet meg-
változásában, majdnem mindannyian a közösségi formát vá-
lasztják, valamint a stratégiai együttmûködések fejlesztésé-
ben, amely multidiszciplináris területeket és érdekeket öt-
vöz, a design-tól az urbanisztikáig, társadalom tudományok-
tól a technológiai kutatásokig. Másrészrôl, a fiatal irodák új
kommunikációs eszközöket fejlesztettek, és a média terüle-
tén új lehetôségek segítségével terjesztik munkásságukat.

tual proposals, artistic installations, urban performances and
social actions, but also through the systematic development
of multiple collaborations in the fields of the arts and social
sciences. In communicational terms, Ateliermob has showed
the potential of the deliberate use of the new instruments
in media space, exploring new forms of communication and
dissemination of their work while assuming a more explicitly
political and active stand, which has had a significant impact
within the profession. In programmatic terms, the Urbanou-
veau of the young Filipe Balestra not only demonstrates the
growing global mobility of young architects, but also reveals
an unusual interest in responding voluntarily to humanitar-
ian architectural programs in international contexts of crisis.
In conclusion, the adaptation to new disciplinary, territori-
al, productive and professional contexts and the consequent
opening of Portuguese architecture to other fields is what
specifically characterizes this emerging generation. Internal-
izing the growing awareness of the multiplicity of reality, this
new generation can no longer, nor even wants, to configure
itself through a unitary program or model. Despite the lack
of such a common ideological, programmatic and aesthetic
Új számítógépes platformokat használnak, melyek könnyen
elérhetôek és széles körben elterjedtek, internetes oldalak-
tól a blogokig, ahol változatos módszerekkel tudják megis-
mertetni magukat, munkáikat, és számos lehetôséget nyit a
gondolatok megvitatására. Röviden, az új irányzatok újraér-
telmezik a szervezôdési formáikat, kommunikációs stratégi-
Elvi értelemben, a fiatal Filipe Balestra

ground, emerging Portuguese practices share both an open
and uncompromised vision of contemporary cultural reality
and a more active and participatory approach to the architec-
tural project. It is no coincidence that the great changes one
senses in this younger generation lie not only in the irrevers-
ible pluralization of their practices, but in the significant re-
politicization of architectural activity, with the re-orientation
of interests towards the urban, social and ecological fields,
something that cannot be disconnected from the changes
in the international situation of the discipline. However, the
new practices introduce not merely new ideological pro-
grams, but also new working approaches, strategies and
methodologies. Taking into account the few common traits
mentioned, the new generation of Portuguese architects
displays a structural multiplicity, manifested in the current
embryonic proliferation and dissemination of differentiated
architectural practices. For the first time it is impossible to
contain these practices within a common ground, besides
an acute awareness of the deteriorating conditions for the
exercise of the profession. But it is also the first time that
these new practices have not been subject to determinant
influences in their formative journey, nor have they had their
professional orientation outlined. This is a generation that
has no clear origin or defined future. However, despite its di-
verse provenance and uncertain fate, this emerging genera-
tion seems to fear neither the lack of guiding influences nor
the absence of predefined programs. Faced with the spectre
of having to renounce their profession, they turned to the
only possible way out, investing in the creative appropriation
of the present and in a renewed attention to the challenges
of reality.
szek növekvô globális mobilitását bizonyítja, de egyben szo-
katlan érdeklôdést mutat a nemzetközi krízisekre irányuló
humanitárius építészeti projektek önkéntes lehetôségeire.
Összegezve, az új diszciplináris, területi, termelési és
szakmai közeghez való igazodás és a portugál építészet ebbôl
következô, más szakterületek felé történô nyitása az, ami kü-
lönösen jellemzi ezt az új generációt. Beépítvén a valóság
A kö-
vékenység jelentôs újrapolitizálódása, a figyelem városi, tár-
zettek be, hanem új munka formákat, stratégiákat, módsze-
reket is. Figyelembe véve az említett kevés közös jellemvo-
nást, a portugál építészet új generációja szerkezeti sokféle-
egyetlen kivezetô utat választották, a jelen kreatív felhaszná-
lását és a valóság kihívásaira fordított újult figyelmet. MOOV + Atelier Data: Forwarding Dallas, Dallas, USA, 2009–
