INSIDE
Life at the Table
Sandra Lewis combines her culinary expertise with her first-hand knowledge of
working in corporate America to share the “secret sauce” to living a healthy life
filled with meaningful work—life at the table. “I really do believe that the table is
the end game and the kitchen is the gateway to spending time at home,” she
said in her February presentation to the DAPS general membership. She
described her life raising two successful daughters as a single mom. “A family
is defined as ‘those who break bread together,’” she said.
“Gathering at the table connects
us to our past, to our present, to
our future,” said Lewis. “What’s
your favorite cheese?” she
asked.
DAPS members called out:
“Swiss!” “Cheddar!” “Bleu!”
“Brie!”
“Before they were cheeses, they
were the same four ingredients,”
said Lewis. “Milk, salt, rennet,
and culture is all they’re made of—all of them.” The differences in the various
types of cheese are due to the process of cheese making. And that’s a whole
lot like life—the outcome is a result of the process. The same can also be said
of the cheeses you don’t like. “What cheeses do you hate?” asked Lewis.
DAPS members were quick to call out: “Limburger!” “Feta!” “Jarlsberg!”
“Some cheeses are made with cow’s milk, and others use goat’s or sheep’s
milk. The culture is different for the different cheeses too,” she explained.
Before they’re made into cheese, they’re merely ingredients. Just like life,
the ingredients are the same for all, but the process defines the outcome.
In fact, you could say that the four letters in LIFE spell out the process to
finding satisfaction in life.

L is for Lead: Be a storyteller. Hemingway said, “A man’s
life story told is a novel.” What’s your story?
I is for Inspire: You are like a shepherd, helping your family
be the best they can be.
F is for Feed: Physically as well as spiritually. You are
powering people with positivity.
E is for Encourage: Encourage others to do good works.
“True satisfaction can’t be bought,” said Lewis. “It can be
cultivated at the table, and in the process we transform not
only ourselves, but our friends and family as well,” she said.
Lewis’ mission is speaking and teaching. “I find people can’t
be at their table because they don’t know how to be in their
kitchen,” she said. Building culinary skills leads to building a
sense of community. The table is the setting for our
community in which we share the stories of our lives. We
can share the day-to-day experiences of life and restore
body, soul, and spirit together. “I encourage you to be a
cheesemaker,” she said, “because the best connection
happens at the home table.” For more information, see

Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift.
That is why we call it the present.
~author unknown~
Knowing that this is one of Jo’s favorite quotes is a good
indicator of the kind of person she is. Jo is a new member
of the DAPS Board of Directors and she is jumping in with
both feet. A Parkinsonian herself, Jo says she enjoys
being around others with PD and that it’s easy to feel
close to people when you are both vulnerable with the
same disease.
In March 2013, after dealing with tremor and balance
issues, Jo retired from a successful career in strategic
services for healthcare companies including Novation
(now called Vizient) and Abbott Laboratories. While at
Novation, she conducted joint research with Arizona State
University (ASU) in healthcare supply chain management.
She became Chairman of the Mark McKenna Healthcare
Management Lecture Series for ASU and currently
continues in that position.
Nine months after retiring, Jo was diagnosed with
Parkinson’s disease. At the time, she was walking four
miles a day for exercise. She soon discovered the
Parkinson’s exercise class at Cooper Aerobics Center in
Dallas. After joining the class, Jo learned about DAPS from
Mary Ellen Malone, who has since then also joined the
DAPS Board.
Jo enjoys playing basketball with her Parkinson’s buddies.
She continues to walk four miles a day and belongs to a
book club. Jo is very proud of her 34-year marriage to her
wonderful husband, Bert. Jo says, “He’s a real keeper.”
Jo’s mother was a nurse for 38 years in charge of disaster
drills – a real extrovert. Her father worked on the Burlington
Northern Railroad as a mechanic on the night shift in
Nebraska – a real introvert. Jo has one sister and three
brothers who claim that Jo is the alpha female. In the
time that I’ve come to know Jo, I’d have to agree with
her siblings.
Jo likes to implement new ideas such as giving annual
DAPS memberships as Christmas and birthday gifts to her
siblings. Stemming from her experience in healthcare, she
has lots of ideas about how physicians can encourage their
PD patients to join support groups.
Jo is going to be a valuable asset to the DAPS Board of
Directors. She has already taken on the responsibility of
coordinating a community day with DAPS for Vizient, the
company from which she retired. This will be a Parkinson's
awareness event designed to highlight the work that DAPS
does as well as to encourage more people with Parkinson's
to take advantage of the services and programs that
DAPS provides.
As Jo says, “You can confide in the people who have
Parkinson’s and know they care about you. They can laugh
with you too – and there’s a whole lot of shaking going on.”

Membership Renewal Update
There have been many questions recently about
when memberships must be renewed. Memberships
expire one year from the date of your last payment.
Reminders are emailed 3 weeks before renewals
expire. If we have no email address on file, then a
reminder letter is mailed. However, because of some
changes to our system, some reminders have not
gone out. If you have a question about the status of
your membership, please call the DAPS office at
972-620-7600 and we will be glad to look that up for
you!
Also, if you are a GEM (Giving Every Month),
you will no longer receive membership renewal
reminders. As long as you remain a GEM, your
membership will remain active. If you are not a
GEM but would like to become one, go to
bit.ly/DAPSGEM and sign up today!

Pssst…
On March 3, 1847—170 years ago—a boy was born in
Edinburgh, Scotland. Twenty-nine years later,
Alexander Graham Bell spoke to his assistant in the
next room on a brand new device called a telephone.
“Mister Watson, come here; I want you.”
Who could have imagined that today we would be
calling, texting, tweeting, taking pictures, playing
games, shopping, navigating, and so on with mobile
telephones?
Sometimes I think that we have almost forgotten the
original intent and the most valuable use of the phone.
We first replaced talking with texting, and then, in a
strange twist, made it possible to speak your message
into the phone and have it transmitted as text. Well, I
get it. Sometimes a text conversation is more
convenient than a phone conversation, and I have
dictated my share of texts.
It’s amazing to think that all this started with a simple
call and invitation from one person to another to join
them in the next room.
If you’re reading this, you are at least familiar with what
I call, “One of Dallas’s best kept secrets.” I’m talking
about DAPS. We don’t really want to be a secret, and
fortunately, the word is getting out. DAPS is
empowering people affected by Parkinson’s disease
to live active and fulfilling lives.
So, will you join me this month by calling someone and
telling them about DAPS? Invite someone to join you
for exercise, a support group meeting, the March
General Membership Meeting, or our upcoming
Parkinson’s Awareness Luncheon. Some secrets are
best shared.
Kindest regards,
A message from Mike Miles

Positive Phase 3 Clinical Trial
Results For Inhaled Levodopa
On February 9, 2017, Acorda Therapeutics announced
positive results from the Phase III trial of CVT-301, an
inhalable form of levodopa. This new form of levodopa
is being studied as a treatment for “off” periods in
people with Parkinson’s disease (PD). Of the
approximately one million people in the USA and
1.2 million in Europe diagnosed with PD, about
35% experience “off” periods in which symptoms of
PD re-emerge before it is time for the next oral dose
of carbidopa/levodopa.
Oral medication absorbed through the digestive tract is
associated with a slow and variable onset of action
before reaching the brain. However inhaled treatments
enter the body through the lungs and reach the brain
shortly thereafter.
The ARCUS® inhaler developed by Acorda is passive
and breath actuated. The user only needs to breathe
in; no pump or other coordinated actuation is required.
Using this platform, a precise dose of a dry powder
form of levodopa is delivered to the lung. In the Phase
III trial of CVT-301, people with Parkinson's who
experienced "off" time had greater improvement in
their motor symptoms when they were treated with the
study drug compared to those who took the placebo.
The trial also demonstrated the drug was safe.
The Michael J. Fox Foundation (MJFF) funded earlier
work on this drug by biotech Civitas before it was
acquired by Acorda. Todd Sherer, PhD, CEO of MJFF
says, “This potential new treatment for the
management of re-emergent symptoms will address an
unmet need for many patients and families.”
CVT-301 will now complete long-term safety testing in
two other ongoing studies. Based on that information,
Acorda plans to submit a New Drug Application (NDA)
to the Food and Drug Administration later this year.
