Fit to Be Tied? All four league games this week feature series that are knotted up. Southern Illinois and Indiana State have a 23-23 all-time series heading into the weekend; Missouri State and Illinois State are tied in their series at 14-14-1; Youngstown State and South Da-kota State have each won five games in their 10 previous meetings; while Western Illinois and North Dakota State have split their first two games in their series.

Two Teams Reach 5-0 Counting South Dakota State and South-ern Illinois this year, only 17 teams in league history have started a season with at least five-straight conference victories. All of the previous 15 teams to start 5-0 finished sec-ond or better in the league standings. Four-teen of the 15 earned playoff berths; and 14 won the title. Nine of them went undefeated in league play. Only three times in league history (1987, 2003, 2009) have two teams started 5-0 or better the same season:Year Team, Note (* - denotes playoffs)

Unchartered Waters On Oct. 13, 2003, Southern Illinois (6-0) faced UNI (5-0) in a battle of league unbeat-ens. It marked the first time in league his-tory that two perfect conference teams faced each other that late in a season. League unbeatens South Dakota State and Southern Illinois play each other Nov. 7 in Brookings. SDSU plays at Youngstown State this week-end, while SIU is at Indiana State.

Will 2 Do? Two losses, historically, has eliminated teams from the league title chase. However, 10 league teams have had two league losses and made the playoffs. No league team, how-ever, has had four losses (overall) and earned at at-large playoff bid. SIU, in 2006, became the first league school to have three league losses and make the playoffs:

2009 Valley FB TelevisionWinning on the Road In 2007, UNI set a league record by winning six road games. Only 12 teams in league history have won five road games in a season and all of them reached the playoffs. No previous league team had claimed six road victories in a season, although both Western Kentucky (2002) and Youngstown State (1997) won six away from home in a season as each won the national title in those respective seasons. Southern Illinois and South Dakota State are perfect on the MVFC road this year (2-0), while Missouri State has won four league road games in a row, dating back to last year. This Week: at Missouri State

That’s a Ton of Yards Seniors Geno Blow and Eyad Salem have piled up yards throughout their careers at Illinois State. This week, both have the chance to eclipse a big milestone by going over 2,000 yards in their time at ISU. Blow sits just 28 rushing yards away from going over 2,000 yards rushing. Salem sits just 39 receiving yards away from going over 2,000 in his three-year career.

That Didn’t Take Long Just seven games into his career, QB Matt Brown has already put his name in the Redbirds record books. He has already cracked the school’s Top 20 in career completions and passing yards. Brown currently sits 18th in career completions with 150 and is 20th on the all-time passing yards list with 1,611. With four games left, those numbers could go up significantly and leave Brown near the middle of both lists in just one season.

Walking Into the Endzone Freshman Tyrone Walker ranks second on the team with 25 catches for 344 yards and three TDs. He has caught long passes from QB Matt Brown in the last two games, an 81-yard connection at Southern Illinois and a 28-yard strike against Indiana State, and is now averaging 13.7 yards per catch on the season.

The Streak is Over The Indiana State Sycamores ended the nation’s longest losing streak with a 17-14 victory over Western Illinois. ISU had dropped each of its previous 33 games prior to its Homecoming victory against the Fighting Leathernecks. The Sycamores last victory prior to Satur-day’s was in a Homecoming contest against Missouri State in 2006. ISU im-proved to a perfect 6-0 all-time against Western Illinois when playing them on Homecoming at Memorial Stadium.

Picking Them Off The Sycamores recorded three inter-ceptions on Saturday against Western Illinois, including the first in the young career of Andrew Blackmon and CJ Cook. Senior Donye McCleskey also added in a pick as well as the Sycamore defense stood tall in the 17-14 victory over Western Illinois. Indiana State had just four interceptions on the season prior to Saturday’s three picks against the Fighting Leathernecks, including the game clincher by Blackmon as time expired.

ISU Faces No. 3 SIU The Sycamores face top five nation-ally-ranked Southern Illinois on Satur-day, Oct. 31. ISU looks to down its first opponent in the Top 25 since downing No. 19 Western Illinois on Oct. 23, 1999. The Sycamores are 8-68 all-time against FCS nationally-ranked oppo-nents, including a mark of 6-49 against league members.

20 Years in the Making Missouri State has won two of its last three homecoming contests and has posted back-to-back wins over the Redbirds. However, the last time MSU hosted ISU on its homecoming was in 1989 when Bears’ quarterbacks DeAn-dre Smith and Paul Carney combined to rush for 216 yards and all five MSU touchdowns in a 42-7 victory. Have Ball, Will Travel MSU has now won four straight MVFC road games. The four-game road winning streak is the team’s best in conference play during its Division I era (1982-present). The all-time MSU road winning streak in conference games is seven (Oct. 30, 1965 to Oct. 28, 1967) when the Bears played in the MIAA. The Bears have won three road games in back-to-back seasons for the first time since their Division I FCS playoff runs in 1989 and 1990. Turn the Beat Around Missouri State played turnover-free football in its win Saturday at North Dakota State, marking the first time the team has done so this season. Like-wise, the Bears forced a key turnover in the fourth quarter of the NDSU game, marking the first take-away by MSU in three games (at Youngstown State, 10/3/09). For the season, MSU is 3-0 when winning the turnover battle and 2-3 when the surrender more turnovers. Grace Moves Up UNI List Senior QB Pat Grace rushed for a pair of touchdowns against No. 11-ranked South Dakota State to increase his career rushing touchdown total to 20. Grace is tied for eighth on the Pan-thers’ all-time rushing touchdown list with Panther offensive coordinator Bill Salmon, who tallied 20 rushing scores from 1972-75.

Rare Back-to-Back Losses UNI lost back-to-back league games for the first time since the 2004 season. After dropping consecutive conference games in 2004 to South-ern Illinois and Western Kentucky, UNI ran off six straight wins to close the season. Since the inception of the league in 1985, UNI has lost consecu-tive conference games only seven times (1986 - EIU, SIU; 1988 - MSU, WIU; 1998 - MSU, ILS; 2002 - WKU, SIU & ILS, INS, WIU; 2004 - SIU, WKU; 2009 - SIU, SDSU).

Lowest Since 2006 UNI’s 14-point effort against No. 11-ranked South Dakota State was the Panthers’ lowest scoring output in a loss since a 24-13 loss to Western Illinois on Oct. 28, 2006 - a span of 40 games. UNI did score a 14-13 victory over Youngstown State on Oct. 27, 2007. The Panthers still rank No. 6 in the nation in scoring this season with a 35.63 per game average.

Jones Holds School Mark Senior WR Donald Jones is the only player in school history to catch 11 passes in two different games. He is also the only player to have two double-figure reception games. Jones had 11 receptions in a game for the second time this past Saturday at Southern Illinois.

Defense Slows the Salukis Southern Illinois came into the YSU game averaging 433.6 yards of total offense and 233.8 yards rushing a game. The Penguins held the Salu-kis to 315 total offensive yards and 147 on the ground. SIU tailback Deji Karim entered the game as the FCS’ top rusher averaging 159.8 yards per contest, but YSU put the clamps on him for just 67 yards on 20 attempts.

Passing Penguins This year, YSU has thrown for 1,398 yards while rushing for 973. The Guins have tried to rush the football, having 272 attempts compared to 206 attempted passes, but the yard-age is in favor of the passing game. Last season was the first time since 1995 that the program passed for more yardage (2,045) than it rushed for (1,988). The last time YSU had more yards passing than rushing in consecutive years was 1986-1987.
