Pachaiyappar Salai RESidEntS StRugglE
due to civic worksBy N Rathi Chithra
A cross-section of residents of Pa-chaiyappar Salai,
which connects the Ori Sa-lai with Seethakathi Salai in Mogappair East, has been put to extreme inconve-nience over the past month or so due to ongoing civic works involving digging up of roads and storm water drainage canals.
Contractors engaged by government agencies have dug up the road at various places on Pachaiyappar Salai (adjacent to the mosque) and covered the trenches with makeshift barricades reducing the road space at different points. At some places on the road, the digging work has been undertaken ad-joining the compounds of houses including near their respective entrance gates.
"The workers demol-ished the slope outside our house and dug up a deep trench here. Due to this we
are unable to leave our car in our portico and are forced to park it outside. I don't know how long they will take to cover the trench and lay motorable roads to fa-cilitate me to park my ve-hicle again inside my house. Considering that my Honda Amaze is only less than six months old, I am hesitant to park it outside as some anti-socials could damage it during night hours. Already there is a scratch mark in the front," complained a man who identified himself as Shyam Sarkar, a tenant on the first floor of an inde-pendent bungalow on Pa-chaiyappar Salai.
Residents lament that they are not able to find car parking space even outside their homes. "Since the road has been dug up in different places and mounds of de-bris have been left in some locations, we are finding it difficult to find a place to park our sedan. I work in long shifts in office and by the time I return home
around midnight most available parking spaces on the road have been taken away. At times, I have to drive around the adjacent roads to find a suitable park-ing space. On such occa-sions, I find it difficult to clean my vehicle as I can't carry a bucket of water all the way from my house to the parking location," com-plained a resident of the locality, who requested not to be named.
CiviC pRoBlems
if you or your neighbours are facing any civic problems such as water logging, stray dogs menace, garbage dump on vacant sites and so on. Don’t hesitate to send a photo with a caption to [email protected] or alert us at 4269 0063.
Extra luggage allowance for student flyers
In an offer for student travelers headed to UK from India, British Airways will now allow an additional check in luggage of 23 kilos along with the existing 23 kilo luggage allowance being al-lowed, for bookings made until Sept 30. Students can also avail a 10% discount for specific cabins, while students headed to US or Canada will also receive a 7% concession on their tickets.

dangER luRkS foR ChildREn at Mangal ERi PaRk EntRanCE
By N Rathi Chithra
ngoing storm wa-ter drain clearing works along the Mangal Eri Park
compound in Mogappair has compromised the safe-ty of visitors to the park, particularly children. The contractors engaged to desilt the storm water drain canal, that runs along the compound of the park including its en-trance, have removed the slabs covering the deep canal thereby exposing those coming to the park to great risk.
“Many children visit the park on a daily basis. Just near the main en-trance of the park huge trenches have been dug up and making it difficult for people to enter through the gate. There is every possibility of someone
fall ing into the deep trenches. Children and the elderly are at a greater risk of falling into it,” says Kamdar Natesan, who is a regular walker at the Mangal Eri Park since the time it was constructed some years ago.
According to regular visitors to the park, often children come running to enter the park without re-alising that there is danger ahead. “One small miscal-culation would expose them to injury or worse. The contractor has not taken any precautionary measure to prevent acci-dental falls into the pits. Throughout you can see the open trench. They should have at least erect-ed some wooden platform as a temporary measure,” says Damal Kannan, a resident of an apartment nearby. “Before sunrise
when visibility is poor walkers find it extremely difficult to enter the park due to the ongoing works. Likewise, after sunset when darkness envelops this road, it becomes ex-tremely tricky to get out of the park,” adds Damal Kannan.
Some regular walkers like Ali Ahamed feel that the Corporation of Chen-nai must close down the park until the civic works in its vicinity are com-pleted. “Instead of risking lives of people, it would as well be better to close the park and complete the work within a record time. What is happening now is absolute callousness of the authorities concerned. Should we wait every time for a tragedy to strike be-fore we put our acts to-gether,” asks the septuage-narian Ali Ahamed.

Stress at your job can lead to overeating and intake of junk food at dinnertime, but there could be a buffer to this harmful pattern. New research suggests that a good night’s sleep can serve as a protecting factor between job stress and unhealthy eating in the evening.
“We found that employees who have a stress-ful workday tend to bring their negative feelings from the workplace to the dinner table, as manifested in eating more than usual and opting for more junk food instead of healthy food,” says a study. The research, published online in the Journal of Applied Psychology, involved two studies of 235 workers. One study dealt with information technology employees who regularly experienced high workload and felt there was never enough time in the workday.
The second study involved call-centre work-ers who often got stressed from having to deal with rude and demanding customers.
In both cases, workday stress was linked to employees’ negative mood while on the job, which in turn was linked to unhealthy eating in the evening, the report added. Source: Internet

HealTH BeneFiTs oF PaPaYa

The fruit has a super enzyme, papain, which helps in faster digestion, increasing metabolism and creat-ing healthy waterworks, all of which aid in an efficient weight loss strategy.

In changes aimed at easing the process of getting a pass-port, the government also an-nounced 10% reduction in passport fee for applicants who are under eight and over 60 and said ration cards could be sub-mitted while applying for tat-kal passports.
Giving the option of sub-mitting a ration card would greatly help people in rural areas who do not have a PAN card.
There was a rise in the de-

And this will be applicable with immediate effect.
While applying for tatkal passports, ap-plicants could give a copy of their Aadhar card, PAN card or ration card, voter iden-tification card apar t from a self-attested letter that he/she does not have any criminal

The government has decided to go strict at traf-fic violations in Tamil Nadu, which consistently accounts for the largest number of fatal road ac-cidents in the country, by suspending the licences of offenders for up to six months.
Overspeeding, driving under the influence of al-cohol, jumping traffic sig-nals, and using mobile
phones while driving or riding, overloading vehi-cles and carrying loads above the prescribed limit in goods carriages will all attract the penalty.
The government has issued a circular to this effect to the state police and transport department officials, instructing them to take strict action against offenders.
The stringent punitive measure will come into immediate effect. The transport department has advised motorists to carry their original driving li-cences with them.

An aero-medical facility that can be availed of by patients across South India will be launched on Sun-day. It is the country’s first hospital-based air ambu-lance that will be operated by Ganga Hospital, Coim-batore.
“The ambulance is not only for our use, but the service can be availed by other hospitals at no extra cost,” according to hospital authorities. The helicopter is exclusively designed for aero medical transport of
patients. The chopper was brought to India in 2011 for a Formula 1 Race, as an air ambulance is mandatory to handle emergencies during the race. It is being oper-ated on a rental basis for around Rs 25 lakh a month.
The chopper can have a return trip without refuel-ling for a distance less than 220 km that covers a major portion of Tamil Nadu, Kerala and till Bengaluru.
On a one-way trip with-out refuelling it can cover 440 km (that is up to Chen-
nai, a major part of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and parts of Sri Lanka). Ser-vices of the ambulance can be availed of round the clock for transporting pa-tients. It can be used for transporting organs and even for shifting patients from a hospital in Chennai to Bengaluru. The cost of operation is Rs. 1 lakh an hour. The hotline numbers 1800 425 25555 or 90030 10200 can be called to avail of the air ambulance service.
