GLO in the GARDEN
Hi Neighbor, We are fast approaching one of the most colorful seasons of the year. This is when the garden shows off with so many flowers of different colors, textures, and scent, it is almost too much to take in and remember. Several of my neighbors have asked me just what is a native plant ? A native plant is a species that originates or occurs natu-rally in a particular area. Native plants create beautiful landscapes, possessing the charm and unique character to the natural history. They adapt to the local environment, are often more disease resistant, and provide food and shelter for wild life. Native plants protect our natural resources by requiring fewer chemicals, less water, and low maintenance. In our area the soil is composed of heavy clay, compacted soil. To address this successfully, first amend the soil with clay buster. Add some product from your mulch pile and place the neck of the plant one inch above the
level of the soil so the water will run off to form a well around the plant. A few suggestions for plants that are easy: Trumpet Honey-suckle attracts hummingbirds and butterflies. Maid-enhair fern and Cinnamon fern are delicate and toler-ate some sun. Butterfly Weed ..orange flower blooms May-June. New England As-ter violet blooms Sept - Oct. Bap-
(Continued on page 15)

tistaviolet blooms May-June. Turtle-head.purple blooms Aug-Oct. CoreopsisyellowJune-July. Coral bellspink..April-June. Bleeding Hearts ..red.April-May. Wild Gerani-um..lavender.April-July. Lobelia.red and blue.Sept, needs very moist soil. Bee-balm.roseJuly-Sept. Obedient Plant..light lav-enderAug-Sept. Black eye Susan..yellowJune-Oct. Speedwellwhite or blue.April-July. Spi-derwortwhite or blue.April-July. Instead of going on for pages, go to your local nursery and find the brochures. Then you can always ask for help. The closest nursery is Behnke and they have knowledga-ble staff. Always note if the specimen needs sun, shade, moist conditions, dry environment and MOST important-ly, what the mature height and width of the plant will be. You dont want to have a six foot bush in front of your window or a thirty foot tree with roots wrapped around your underground pipes or pushing against the slab of your foundation. If you still have questions, email Home & Garden Information Center http://www.hgic.umd.edu Maryland Cooperative Extension of U of Md. We are so fortunate to have so many resources in this area.
LAWNS: Perhaps you were not aware of the Maryland lawn fertiliz-er law. The guidelines are to prevent over fertilization and more contamination to the Chesapeake Bay. Follow the U of Md recommendations at extension.um.edu/hgic Here are some tips to read the fertilizer label:
All fertilizer products are labeled with three numbers separated by dashes that represent the percent by weight of the three most important plant nutrients. Nitrogen (N) promotes green, leafy growth. Phosphorus (P) promotes root, fruit and flower devel-opment.
Potassium (K) promotes disease and drought tolerance.
The bag should indicate (O) for Phosphorus by state law. Suggestion: 27-0-5.
Fall fescue and Kentucky blue grass can still be ferti-lized in May and June.
Fertilize at the right time.
Use the calculations on the bag so that you dont over fertilize
Apply with spreader and not by hand.
Mow to the right height.
Water in the early morning.
Did you know that bats are on the decline ? They eat thousands of mosquitos as well as other insects.
We have all read about CCD-colony collapse syndrome in the Bee world. Bees are in decline all over the United States and Europe. There are many reasons for this and it would be of great interest to google why, but one way we can help encourage bees is not to use pesticides. The nurseries carry products that do not have the severe side effects of those used in the past. This year I am going to follow what the Queen of England uses on all of her ros-es. All of the flowers in the public parks are spread with garlic in warm water. If it is good enough for the queen, well !!!!!!!!!!!
Poison Ivy, Oak and Sumac: I would be remiss if I didnt remind you of these plants that often hide among other plants in the beds. Poison Ivy, Oak, Sumac contain an oil called urushiol. When this oil touches the skin many people develop an allergic reac-tion that causes a rash. There are three ways to get this rash:
DIRECT CONTACT: touching the plant INDIRECT CONTACT: the oil can stick to the fur of
your dog or cat. AIRBORNE CONTACT: NEVER BURN THESE
PLANTS FOR YOU CAN BREATHE THE PARTI-CLES INTO YOUR LUNGS AND CAUSE PER-MANENT DAMAGE.
Prevention: Wear long pants, long sleeves, and gloves when there is a possibility of exposure. Dont touch your eyes or your face with your gloves. Wash your skin with warm soap and water after leaving the garden.
Well it must be tea time, so let me find a shady spot and enjoy all that I work for. Happy gardening.

MONTPELIER HOMEOWNERS: ACCC COVENANT ENFORCEMENT The Architectural Control & Compliance Committee (ACCC) is committed to working with homeowners to ensure covenant compliance in Montpelier. The ACCC can review approval requests between meetings and when all re-quested information is provided with the form, many approvals can be granted within a week of submission.
The Architectural Control & Compliance Committee (ACCC) has received, and approved, many requests for installation
of solar panels in the last year. While some of us may not like the look of solar panels on a house, the Maryland Real
Property Code prohibits restrictive covenants that impose limitations on the installation of solar collection panels on the
roof of your home, provided that the owner owns or has a right for the exclusive use of the roof. With this in mind, the
ACCC will no longer require prior approval for installation of roof-mounted solar collectors provided that
they comply with all State and Local laws. The ACCC requests notification of the intent to install solar col-
lectors and the approximate date for installation. Notification may be made by email ([email protected]
or [email protected]), mail (PO Box 2503, Laurel, 20709) or submitted on an approval form.

MONTPELIER TODAY 26 May/June 2015
Did you know that?Did you know that?Did you know that?Did you know that? Montpelier is a community developed by Levitt & Sons, a division of Levitt Corporation, and next year is the 50
th Anniversary of our community. The first survey and plans were submitted for Mont-
pelier on January 21, 1966 and approved February 16, 1966. The first homes began selling in De-cember 1966. The original temporary entrance to the neighborhood was from Rt. 197 and Muirkirk Road on what is now Mt. Pleasant Drive, but that entrance no longer exists but can barely be seen just past the guard rail at the end of Mt. Pleasant Drive at Pleasant Ct. And speaking of Pleasant Ct., did you know the homes on this cul-de-sac were the original model homes for Montpelier? There are 4 basic models of homes in Montpelier and there are 2 variations of each model, thus creating 8 different styles of homes. Do you know which model you live in? While most may know the models, some people may not, so here is the chance to learn some interesting facts about Montpelier. The 4 models are:
Framingham 2. Eton 3. Jamestown 4. Gramercy
While the inside of each model had the standard Levitt & Sons bathrooms in the trademark colors of Yellow, Pink, or Blue with some even having Green the outside varied depending on the placement of the garage. The Framingham model if the garage is on the left you have a brick front model (in the patio area), and if the garage is on the right you have a stone front model.
The Eton model if the garage is on the left you have a brick front with a porch over the front door, and if the garage is on the right you have a stone front with box windows on each side of the front door.
MONTPELIER TODAY 27 May/June 2015
The Jamestown model if the garage is on the left you have a brick front with an enclosed overhang and window boxes, and if the garage is on the right you have a stone front with an open overhang and window panels.
The Gramercy model if the garage is on the left you have a stone front with a covered patio, and if the garage is on the right you have a brick front with no patio.
As you drive through Montpelier, you may see 2 models with side entry garages the Framing-ham and the Jamestown are the only 2 models that have them. Whats interesting is that you wont find any Framinghams with a side entry garage from the left, and you wont find any Jamestowns with a side entry from the right. Lastly, some may know this but many dont while it may appear that each street has a mix of the models and variations on them, there is one street in Montpelier that doesnt. Which street does not have the Jamestown model on it?
The answer to this question will be in the next newsletter.
