MEETING ACTIVITYToday’s meeting was held at Saint Mary’s College, SodaCenter. Although the college had scheduled us for Hagerty

Lounge a last minute change put us back in Soda Center.With no pre-warning the members and guests luckily foundthe meeting room. The invocation was provided by TonySchoemehl. Tony brought several short readings from thefounder of J. C. Penney Stores. Cliff Dochterman informed the listeners that the J. C. Penny founder was along-time member of New York Rotary and used to instructhis managers to also belong to Rotary.

SPEAKER OF THE DAY

We were pleased to have as our guest speaker, FBISpecial Agent, Joy Michar-Meer with advice on “AvoidingInternet Fraud Scams.” Joy has been with the San

Francisco FBI Field Office for seven years working with theCyber Counter Intelligence Unit. This unit has sub-offices inOakland (where Diana Cin is located), San Jose andMonterey. The Cyber Unit covers a wide territory fromMonterey to the Oregon border including Silicon Valley.

Joy informed the group that in 1995 world population wasabout 6.9 billion and internet users totaled 60 million. By2013 the world population had grown to 7 billion andinternet users had swelled to 2.8 billion (a nearly 50-foldincrease in net use.) That attracts a lot of “bad guys.” TheCyber Unit addresses computer intrusions, ID theft andinternet fraud. We could be talkin about ma or banks and

companies being attacked or individuals. Any unauthorizeentry to your computer space is a felony. Other governmenagencies active in the defense of your data are Department of Homeland Security, NSA (with an overseafocus), Secret Service, FTC and the US Postal Service.

Check your computer data regularly, keep defensivsoftware up to date and don’t share personal data ocommunicate with anyone you don’t know & trust. Speaphishing is a very active area. Attacks are no longeclumsy attempts to hoodwink you into a response. Nothey use your own personal data against you (perhapgained from Facebook or other social sites) and they comat you in very well engineered attacks. They will pose ayour bank, PayPal, the IRS, etc. - with accurate branlogos, in an attempt to pry personal financial data out of yo(bank pins, credit card numbers, address, phone numbersetc.)

In summary:- Be careful with your personal data.- Limit cookies on your computer.- For online submissions to unknown sites, do no

use your primary e-mail address.- Use strong passwords.- Keep a clean machine (run malware detectio

regularly).- Be cautious what you open/read on-line.- Report attacks quickly. Maybe an attack doesn

rise to the level FBI scrutiny but you can report it tyour bank, credit card, etc. These companies havsome very sophisticated systems which can bused to track the attackers and limit damage.)

HAPPY BUCKS AND OTHER STUFFAngelo Costanza had 5 happy bucks for the Bocce Bash

Martinez which raised $4,610. Lad Lynch had 2 happybucks for college football wins for UCLA and Boston CollegSonja Malaga had some happy bucks to celebrate herreturn to Moraga Rotary and a ride to the meeting today wiCliff. Debbie Roessler had some happy bucks for theMoraga Rotary “guys” (Frank, Tony, John and Ron) whohelped out Orinda Rotary last weekend by bartending andhelping set-up for the “Dancing With the Cars” dinner.Debbie also added she is enjoying the PBS documentary othe Roosevelt’s.

CAIFF FILM FESTIVAL:Cliff Dochterman attended a portion of the Film Festivalshowings at the Rheem Theater. He particularly praisedthe “Citizen Hearst” documentary.

e-WASTE COLLECTION:Our Moraga Rotary e-waste collection is this Saturday,Sept. 20

th from 8:30 to 4:00 pm. Although not with us at

today’s meeting, Rich Render passed a sign-up sheetaround last week and noted there will be coffee, donuts andchicken sandwiches. Come all!

CHRISTMAS STOCKINGS: Barbara Bruner spoke aboutthe Stocking Project for Juvenile Hall in Martinez. Thisevent serves the juvenile inmate population and is mostappreciated. The production schedule is as follows:

• Tuesday, October 7th @ 2:00 pm for sewing

stockings at Trinity Hall, School St., Moraga.

• Saturday, October 25th

@ 2:30 pm for decoratingstockings at Juvenile Hall. (Barbara noted that atthis point, most of us will never get to Juvenal Hallunless we go there to do the Christmas StockingProject! What exactly does she mean?)

• Sunday, December 14th for stuffing the stockings.

This includes a pot luck.• Goal = 300 Christmas Stockings.
