Identified as one of the most innovative programs in higher education in 2014 by Peterson’s guide,the MS-TC&E program is unique in its focus, interdisciplinarity and flexibility.
Its focus is the discipline of commercializing early stage but potentially breakthrough technologies intogamechanging businesses.
It is interdisciplinary because it combines courses from the Lally School of Management, RPI’s Schools of Scienceand Engineering, and Albany Law School. Innovation is, after all, highly interdisciplinary.
Its flexibility comes from the choice of three different elective tracks that students can pursue.

Get the Business Basics first:Learn the process of technologycommercialization by:Working with inventors tounderstand the businessimplications of new technologies;Developing business modelproposals and testing them out;Obtaining funding;Staffing and managing theenterprise;Understanding how to value and protect intellectual property;Developing project managementskills.
Go Beyond the Basics and Get the Big Picture:Consider major societalproblems that technology canhelp as well as hurt, such asclimate change, clean air, andenergy independence. How dowe deploy science andtechnology to create social valueand solve global problems?Learn to think about publicpolicy, the technologydevelopment process, venturecreation and infrastructure, andtechnology transfer practices.

The curriculum includesthree parts:A management core thatprovide the a grounding inbusiness basics, a Law Core toaddress legal issues ofintellectual property andcontracts, and a choice of threeelective tracks that allow you totake course across RPI schoolsand develop expertise in an areaof science/engineering, policy,or innovation management.
