Where do you work? I

work at Barnes-Jewish

Hospital.

Where did you go to

school? I graduated from

high school in Trinidad

and Tobago. I received my

Bachelor of Science from

Spelman College and my

medical degree (MD) and

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from Emory University

School of Medicine.

What does an ophthalmologist do? An

ophthalmologist is an eye doctor who not only

prescribes glasses, but also performs eye surgery.

The eye may be a small part of the body, but it

has many different important parts. Eye surgeons

can perform plastic surgery on the outside of the

eye, and can also do surgery inside the eye using

special microscopes. We use different colored lights,

headlamps and high tech machines to take pictures

of, and treat, the inside of the eye.

Why did you choose this career? I loved science

in high school and college and decided to get both

my MD and PhD, so that I could use research to

help improve the medical care patients receive. As

an ophthalmologist, I get to keep my patients’ eyes

healthy with regular eye exams, and to improve

their vision with surgery.

What is your favorite part of the job you have?

The best part of my job is interacting with patients

of all ages and from all walks of life. I perform

surgeries that straighten kids’ eyes so that they can

learn in school, and replace cloudy lenses in older

patients with new ones so that they can keep doing

the activities they enjoy.

Pretzel Melts Ingredients:

12 Mini pretzels,

1 Slice cheddar

cheese (cut into 6

pieces), mustard (optional)

Directions: Lay 6 mini pretzels on a foil-lined

cookie sheet. Put a small slice of cheddar

cheese on each pretzel and top with another

pretzel. Bake at 425 degrees for 10 minutes

(or until the cheese melts). Allow to cool,

and eat as is, or dip in mustard.

Healthy Snacks

Once you’re out of

school, many of you

may have a lot of extra

time on your hands to

be snacking. Resist the

urge to eat sweet, salty,

fried and high-calorie

non-nutritious snacks this

summer.

Create a Smart Summer Eating plan with your

parents. Ask their help in finding nutritious

snacks and meals for the summer.

Delicious juicy, ripe fruits are all around

and are healthy for you too! Make it

your goal to come back to school in

the fall healthier and happier!

As the weather gets warmer, there

are many ways that we can enjoy

ourselves outdoors and stay healthy

over the summer. Some naturally

active things you can do include:

> Help with yard work: planting,

weeding, etc.

> Walking to the store when

possible.

> Wash your parent’s car.

> Play, play, play outside as

much as you can!

Staying active, getting your heart rate up and

opening your lungs will help you start off next

school happier and healthier!

May 7th is National

Children’s Mental Health

Awareness Day. As a class,

discuss what you think are

important areas of

mental health.

Today we’ll

focus

on stress

management. This means

that we’ll consider ways

to relieve the stress in

our lives. Individually,

make a list of four things

that cause you stress.

Again as a class, talk

about different methods

for stress relief: Time

management, coping,

speaking with trusted

adults, exercising,

journaling, etc. Now

looking at your stressors

list, what of these relievers

might help?
