We were filmed live from 'Hautbois House' Anglia Guiding nearColtishall. We sang songs and we all had a climb on the outsidefloodlit climbing wall. Between the live broadcasts we were treatedto a lovely hot breakfast. When it began to rain we came indoors for circus skills and birthday cake. While the BBC television filmingwas going on Wally Web of Radio Norfolk also came and interviewed two of the Brownies, and when the BBC had finished at around 9am Anglia Television turned up so indoor archery was setup for the filming. All the girls enjoyed the morning despite theearly start. Some of the Brownies and their leaders who had had theearly start and the TV production excitement then loaded up the minibus and drove to Butlins in Skegness to join 2,500 Brownies andtheir leaders for 'Starburst'. Starburst was for two nights with craftsand activities in the day and discos in the evenings. Thankfully we were on second sitting for the dining room - a lay in beforebreakfast!

Dia Espanol!Pupils at Millfield Primary School in North Walsham said Hola! toSpanish traditions and culture in a fun packed day of Spanish activities. The children who got into the spirit of the day dressed in the traditionalcolours associated with Spain of red and yellow and classrooms were awash of colour, which included many flamenco and matador costumes. The day was led by Ms Contreras, who hadcome to the schoolfrom the Canary Islands in October as part of a cultural enrichment programmefunded by the BritishCouncil. Ms Contrerashas been teachingSpanish to the pupilsand has now set up anafter school club forparents and pupils as well. Ms Contreras taught the children traditionaldances in the school hall, while other activities were taking place in thepupils’ classrooms. The children had enormous fun creating artwork inspired by Spanish artists, cooking, model making and enjoyed a traditional Spanish lunch. For many this was the first time they had theopportunity to sample Spanish food and loved it, some pupils stated theywished they could have it every day!

Ava Craske a pupil in year 5 said “There were lots of things I liked, I enjoyed the dances it was really fun and I learnt new moves. I alsoloved the Spanish lunch the meatballs were really good.”

Top ambulance boss to addresspublic meeting in CromerThe new Chief Executive of the East of England Ambulance ServiceTrust, Anthony Marsh, will address residents of North Norfolk about hisplans for the health emergency service.

Dr Marsh will be speaking at an Act on Ambulances campaign eventand addressing the campaigners who fought for improvements when stories of poor response times were first highlighted more than twoyears ago. He will be the first Chief Executive to address members ofthe public since a number of damning reports from the Care QualityCommission were first issued over two years ago.

Anthony Marsh has joined the East of England Ambulance Service Trust (EEAST) on a part-time basis, also continuing to work with theambulance trust in West Midlands. He was brought in after concernsover poor response times in the East - in particular rural areas like NorthNorfolk - and worries over savings within the service which had plannedto reduce the ambulance fleet in the area.

The event will take place on Monday 14 April at 8pm in the CromerCommunity Centre on Garden Street. Suggestions for questions can be submitted in advance to [email protected] and updatedinformation about the event will be online atwww.actonambulances.co.uk.

Denise Burke, an Act on Ambulances campaigner and Labour's prospective parliamentary candidate for North Norfolk, said "The Act on Ambulances campaign has been focusing on holding the ambulancetrust and government health ministers to account over the failures withinour local ambulance service.

I am confident that Dr Marsh is the right man to bring in the improvements that are needed within the trust, and I hope this year isgoing to be a turning point for EEAST. It is vital they are as transparentas possible going forwards, so I am delighted to announce this event taking place in North Norfolk on 14 April.

This is a public meeting so members of the public are both invited andencouraged to join us to hear what Dr Marsh has to say, and also to putquestions to the man in charge of our ambulance service."

Four Youth Hubs, in Cromer, Mundesley, Sheringham and Stalham, have developed intothriving centres of positive activity, community involvement and emotional/ social development. The diverse range of activities that membershave taken part in is remarkable and extensive:beach trips, theatre visits, campfire cooking,and IFS Motivational Defence sessions, intergenerational networking at Halsey House,conservation work with the Broads Authority;

advice and information on issues such as bullying and respect, relationships, sexualhealth, substance misuse, anger managementand emotional wellbeing; consultations andcollaborations with The Matthew Project(drugs and alcohol service), The Joy of Food,Smoke Free Norfolk, Community Sports, HighSchools and local Police Services. Twelveyoung people from Stalham raised £200 forchosen charities, Macmillan and B-EAT.

“We make sure that all our activities are ‘youth-led’, so thatwe continue to meet the directand expressed needs of theyoung people we work with,” says senior youth worker William Mills, who has been “immensely impressed by the passion andimagination of young people in North Norfolk, and their positive efforts to make a differencein their local community”.

Over the past year, MAP’s youth workers havemade contact with over one hundred youngpeople, aged 11-19, through the popular HUBs,

and through LifeZones at nearby HighSchools; MAP expects the project to receive ongoingfunding and continue

expanding and developing.

Building on existing linkswithin the community, the HUBs will increase their engagement through fundraising activities andsocial visits, attendance at the Cromer Carnivaland other summer festivals, and inter-HUBprojects and events. The groups will be twiningwith a school in Liberia, through email and

Skype correspondence whereyoung people will learn about each other’s communities, theirsimilarities and differences.

If you, or a young person youknow, are interested in attending one of the HUBs, or would like any further information, please contact William Mills on07876 864281 or [email protected].

The four little kittens waiting to be blood tested continue to thrive andhave now had their first vaccination. Three of them are completelyblack, although Kato, who is the largest and naughtiest little boy, isblack and white. They are chunky little kittens with nice round faces; allare very mischievous, and are enjoying life, playing together. MeanwhileBilly, the little cat mentioned and pictured last time, has had his eye removed. David, his vet, advised us that the glaucoma had been causedby previous damage to the eye and although we will need to monitor hisother eye for the time being, he believes he will not have any problemsthere. As Billy is a very affectionate little cat (his fosterer calls him herlittle cuddle bucket) we believe he will soon find a loving new home.Patsy, one of our kittens, has recently returned to our care as she was not getting on with the resident cats and suffered several bouts of cystitiswhich may have been related to this. A recent visit to the vets confirmedshe had crystals in her bladder and she has been put on a special newfood which, hopefully, will help resolve the problem. If, however, shedoes not respond to the treatment she will need further investigations toget to the bottom of the situation. Frequent visits to the litter tray do notbother her and she is a very confident little kitten, who enjoys a cuddle, but only in the mornings. After that she is far too busy having a play to sit around on her fosterer’s knee. We will let you know how she isgetting on, next time.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit

www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats beforegiving us a call on the above number to findout where any particular cat is being fostered.

If however you are interested in receiving helpto neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880256948 (to see if you are eligible for avoucher).

Little Snoopi hit the headlines when at just fourteen weeks old he found himself abandoned on a freezing cold January night in Downham Market.

Luckily a passer-by heard a whimper from hispet carrier which had been hidden in a hedgeon a residential street. Whilst being containedin a carrier kept Snoopi safe from traffic thisalso meant that had he not been found, hecould have caught hypothermia. The RSPCAsuspects that Snoopi was an unwanted Christmas gift and sadly his story isn’t unique.

January is an incredibly busy time for those working in animal rescue. It is when peopletire of their new pet and decide a lifelong commitment isn’t for them. ThankfullySnoopi’s tale has a happy ending. He’s found his forever home here in North Norfolk.

Luckily his new family were watching theevening news when his plight was reportedupon and were straight on the phone to offerhim a home. This cheeky chappie has settled inwell, he loves to play with squeaky toys andstealing his owners’ socks!

Snoopi has found some new friends at AnimalMagic Dog Club where he was offered a placeat puppy classes - he’s been off to visit our clubphotographer to pose for his picture to be takentoo. Not all abandoned dogs are as lucky asSnoopi and members of Animal Magic workhard fundraising for local rehoming centres. You’ll find dogs and puppies of all ages, shapes and sizes looking for a home, so ifyou’re considering getting dog then pleasemake a rehoming centre your first stop, youmight just find your best friend waiting therefor you.

Animal Magic Dog Club based near NorthWalsham is a fun, family orientated club offering a wide range of training for puppies, junior and adult dogs. For more information on the club and classesavailable please call 01263 720730 or visit ourweb site www.animal-magix.co.uk.

Following the very successful exhibition of Mary Randle and Lance Beeke duringMarch, Naomi Brangwyn, glass artist will beexhibiting at The Gallery Norfolk from April5th to 26th. You have the chance to meetNaomi on April 5th all day to discuss her work and techniques.

Every artist works in a medium, such as oils, watercolour, charcoal, stone or bronze. NaomiBrangwyn’s preferred medium is glass –stained glass. If those words suggest solemnchurch windows, then think again. Naomi’spieces are lively, imaginative, a breath of freshair – and perfectly scaled for a domesticsetting.

Many of them evoke the landscapes and seascapes of East Anglia – she has lived inSuffolk since the 1980s, and onits coast since 2001. “Moving toa home by the sea was significantfor both my life and for my artisticidentity,” says Naomi. “It was a timefor new beginnings – and one of those wasmy work with glass. Norfolk in particular inspires me with its unspoilt nature,” she continues. “It’s full of hidden secrets. You go round a corner in the road and a new viewunfolds. The county’s vast skies dictate themood as the light shifts in intensity and the

colours change ... energetic, calm or reflective.”

She does not, however, seek to portray specific locations: “It is more about using my imagination to capture an experience,” she says. “... A funday on the beach with the warm sun and breezeon your cheeks, and lunch in the beach hut or asolitary walk with the sand between your toes."

“It’s fascinating to take something that movesand changes and to capture its spirit in something as still and delicate as a piece ofglass,” she continues. “I never cease to be intrigued by the process of taking this hard, flat, brittle material and transforming it intosky or water, or something as soft and delicate

as a field poppy.”

Always exploring and always experimenting, Naomi uses traditional stained glass techniques, but produces art that is, as she says, “a uniquecombination of glass, lead and

nature”.

Often, she will literally add an extradimension by layering the glass – and

by integrating pieces of decorative metal orfound objects such as shells and pebbles. Engraving can also play a part. All this meansthat each of herpieces is different –this is art rather thandesign – and each

is individually signed.

The Gallery’s owner, Polly Miller, explainsthat: “This is our first exhibition with Naomi, though her work has become closely associatedwith The Gallery Norfolk. The pieces we havechosen draw inspiration from Norfolk and itsscenery, which is very much in keeping withthe gallery’s ethos. With prices ranging from £30 to £395, small-scale pieces will be on show beside some quite ambitious and spectacularworks. The great thing is that each of them willbe right for someone’s home and that they openup new possibilities for display ... Yes, you canhang them on a wall, but you can also make afeature of them in a window. In a sense theyare made of light, and each one offers its ownever-changing play of colours, lines and textures, so they really do bring a space alive.”

Did You Miss the Mary Randle and Lance Beeke exhibition inMarch? If you did, you will be delighted to know that their work is stillavailable at the Gallery.

They are two local painters, bothendlessly fascinated by the play oflight.

For all their shared luminosity, the two artists inhabit different

environments. Mary’s vivid, almost tactile paintings of flowersevoke intimate and stylish interiors, while Lance, with his atmospherically shaded landscapes, favours the open air. An exampleof each of their evocative work isalongside - so pop down to theGallery for a triple viewing.

A picture to the pastWhilst clearing out the family loft after a burst pipe, Alex Kearns discovered his grandfather’s old plate camera. It was made by prestigious camera makers Butcher & Sons of London around 1913.

Alex managed to get the camera working again after it was dried out.The camera was convertedfrom using plates to film andpaper and is now back to fullworking order. Alex used thecamera to great effect on hisAS level course at PastonSixth Form College. The project investigates places inNorfolk such as St Benet’sAbbey, Norwich Cathedraland Bingham Priory whichwere affected by HenryVIII’s Dissolution of Monasteries. This was a set of legal processes between 1536 and 1541 which disbanded monasteries, priories and convents in England and Wales.

Alex’s Grandfather, a commercial photographer, inspired Alex to takephotography at GCSE. Alex is intending to study Business or I.T. atUniversity.

We frequently bring you information about theNorfolk Dixieland Jazz Band and particularlyabout its activities at The Goat Inn, Skeyton. The band started about five years ago andquickly established itself as one of the best ofits type in the region. Crucial to its popularity,of course, is the quality of the musicians andtheir feel for the music they play.

Equally important, however, has been theband’s relationship with the owners of the GoatInn. The band sees the venue as its home-baseand six dates were planned for 2014. Theevents in January and March were so well attended, however and the atmosphere so good, that there will now be an additional date on

Sunday 6 April betweenthe usual times of 1.30p.m. and 4.30 p.m.Spokesperson for theband, Vic. Brown, says“The Goat is a greatplace to play. You canjust drop in for a drink or have a meal in therestaurant or the garden room where the bandplays. In the summer everything moves into thegarden. Admission is free and the aim of theowners and the band was to turn the venue intoNorth Norfolk’s premier traditional jazz venue. We feel that the success has been due to theteam approach between everybody at The Goatand the band”. Working together isn’t just a

platitude at this venue.

In addition to 6 April, the band will be at The Goat on 1 June, 6 July, 3 August and 7September. If you think about going along and would like lunch it is essential to book.Tel: 01692 538600.

The picture shows the owners of the Goat, Jem(second from left), Jo and Judy (in the middle)with the guys in the band. A great team.

JAZZ TEAM AT THE GOAT

The Old ChurchyardI lean against the old church gate,

The churchyard has improved of late. The tombstones always cold and grey

So not look so bad today.

The sun shines from an azure sky,White puffs of cloud slide slowly by.

Some kind soul has cut the grassShowing bright celandines along the path.

White doves coo quietly in the tower,A robin sings high on a bough.

Soft green now cloaks all the trees,Daffodils nod in the breeze,

Suddenly dark clouds have come,Now snowflakes obscure the sun.The weather changes every day,It’s April, please no snow in May!

North Norfolk District Council(NNDC) Leader, Tom FitzPatrick, announced that Councillor GlynWilliams would be joining NNDC’sCabinet following the announcementat the Full Council meeting on 26 February that Councillor Trevor Ivoryhad decided to stand down from theCabinet. Mr Williams, who lives in Long Common,Swanton Abbott, was first elected to the council in May 2011. His ward includes Felmingham, Skeyton, Suffield, Swanton Abbott, Westwick and Worstead.

He came to local prominence in 2008 as chairman of Cetag - Coltishall Eco-Town Action Group - a campaigning body of 14parish councils surrounding the former RAFColtishall base which were opposed to

a proposal to turn it into an eco town.

Mr Williams will join the seven existing members of the ruling Conservative Cabinet,Tom FitzPatrick (Leader), Rhodri Oliver(Deputy Leader), Angie Fitch-Tillett, RussellWright, John Lee, Benjie Cabbell Manners andWyndham Northam. His portfolio will includeLeisure and Cultural Services and CustomerServices.

Cllr. FitzPatrick said: “Cllr. Trevor Ivory hasmade a huge contribution to both North Norfolk District Council and the ConservativeGroup since we took over the administration ofthe Council nearly three years ago. Trevor hasmade a real impact in areas such as Housingand Legal Services and his vision in establishing the Big Society Fund has greatlybenefited communities and organisationsacross the whole of North Norfolk.

“I am extremely grateful for the unfailing

support he has givenme personally during my time as Leader, particularly during theearly days. The groupis sorry to see himleave Cabinet and heleaves with both ourregrets and goodwishes for the future.I am pleased that we will continue to have thebenefit of his knowledge and enthusiasm.

“I am delighted to welcome Cllr. Williams to the Cabinet. Glyn has had a long careerworking as an officer in local government. He has brought a wealth of experience to thegroup and I am pleased that we will be able tomake full use of this expertise in his portfolioresponsibilities. I am looking forward to working even more closely with him in thecoming months.”

Weather Summaryby Ned NimbusThe past three months haveturned out more or less as fore-cast although day and night temperatures have been higher mainly because the high pressure area has not been as far north as I thought it was going to be.

We still have a maritime climate regardless of this winter’s antics andthe past three that were cold and often snowy. The change seems to be,and it has been for some time, that there are more occasions when theweather pattern get set for a few months with little variation. This winterwas a good example of that when storm after storm came across from a cold North America and three large amounts of moisture at the southand west of Britain. Most storms turned north to the west of us so wewere spared the main forces of these depressions. The one that did crossthe north of Scotland did, however, have a major impact on our coastlinebut thereafter the very vast majority stayed out to the west bringing us alot of southerly gales but much less in the way of rain than further west.Frost and snow were notable absentees.

The next three months will see more of a mix of weather but that doesnot rule out the rogue air mass turning up out of season and at this timeof the year the power of the sun needs to be taken into account.

RSPCAThe RSPCA East Norfolk Branch has several dogs looking for new homes andlots of cats. The animals featured here arejust two of them looking for their new forever homes. We held our first open afternoon on Saturday15th March and were overwhelmed by theamount of people through the doors.

Having never held such an event we were unsureof the response, however we need not have worried. As soon as 2pm arrived people flockedto the purpose built surgery to have a look behind the scenes. We had demonstrations of theultrasound machine, digital X-ray processor andvarious critters to see under the microscope. People had the opportunity to look in theatre andsee how a spay operation would be performed, whilst in the prep room at the dental table amock tooth extraction was under way with thechildren performing the extractions!

We had various associates in the spacious waiting rooms including Dave Brice our dog behaviourist, Homefinders grey hound rescue,

NNCLT and Animal Magic with games and raffles, money raised by our tombola went toNNCLT at Beeston Regis.

We were delighted to see many of our regularclients coming along to see just what goes onwhen they leave their much loved pets with usfor any procedures and welcomed many newclients through the doors too. Overall it was a really good afternoon enjoyed by staff and visitors alike, with plenty of tea and cake to finish off.

Our thanks to our clients, old and new for theircontinued support.

Look out for the next Miramar event - The DogShow -at the carnival!

Students studying AS level Biology at PastonSixth Form College were able to appreciate atfirst hand a range of cutting edge research whichtakes place at the John Innes Centre in Norwich.Their Biology coursework requires them to identify a problem, and then describe how scientists might solve the problem, and what ethical, environmental and economic issues thismight raise.

The students were rather spoiled for choice withtopics, as researchers working in the field of

nitrogen fixation, ash dieback, finding new antibiotics, potato blight, and finally the production of novel foods with higher levels of nutrients, such as the purple tomato, explained the principlesof their work.

The students had a tour of the site, visiting in turn the seed bank (that maintains stocks of ancientcrops), and the genome analysis facility, that sequences DNA and the huge glass houses with anarray of experiments. Given it was a cold February day the visit to the wheat growing experimentswas popular as the climate inside the glasshouses was meant to simulate mid -June.

Biology teacher Julian Thomas said “ Paston Sixth Form College has a long tradition of linkswith the centre and we always feel that being able to meet and talk to scientists face to face givesstudents the best possible chance of producing the best possible coursework”.

A gift that lasts a lifetimeSt Nicholas House School in North Walsham is to take the offer of a ‘Free Taster Day’ one stepfurther by offering a ‘Free Taster Term’, worth £1,595. Think about what your child could learn in a day – now discover what they can experience in a whole term!

A spokesman says “We understand the initial step into independent education can be very daunting for some parents, not only financially, but also emotionally. Families have lots of questions and often in every independent school prospectus these questions are all addressed thesame way, which can be overwhelming. Instead, come and see us, come experience us first hand, for a tuition-free whole term. We believe that this is the only way for families to truly appreciateall the benefits of a quality education and the lifelong opportunities and results that come with it.

Paul Grisewood, director of St Nicholas House School is a teacher and parent himself, so he appreciates the benefits of a good start in life. “The greatest gift you can give your child is a goodeducation; one that will prepare them for the future, educate them in all aspects and instill in themthe confidence and positive attitudes necessary for today’s competitive world. Many people viewindependent schools as ‘toff schools’, but this is far from the case today. St Nicholas HouseSchool provides a quality education for much less you think and we take pride in our family atmosphere where students of all abilities have their needs met.

A gift that lasts a lifetimeSt Nicholas House School in North Walsham is to take the offer of a‘Free Taster Day’ one step further by offering a ‘Free Taster Term’,worth £1,595. Think about what your child could learn in a day – nowdiscover what they can experience in a whole term!

A spokesman says “We understand the initial step into independent education can be very daunting for some parents, not only financially, but also emotionally. Families have lots of questions and often in everyindependent school prospectus these questions are all addressed thesame way, which can be overwhelming. Instead, come and see us, comeexperience us first hand, for a tuition-free whole term. We believe thatthis is the only way for families to truly appreciate all the benefits of aquality education and the lifelong opportunities and results that comewith it.

Paul Grisewood, director of St Nicholas House School is a teacher andparent himself, so he appreciates the benefits of a good start in life. “The greatest gift you can give your child is a good education; one thatwill prepare them for the future, educate them in all aspects and instill in them the confidence and positive attitudes necessary for today’s competitive world. Many people view independent schools as ‘toff schools’, but thisis far from the case today. St Nicholas House School provides a qualityeducation for much less you think and we take pride in our family atmosphere where students of all abilities have their needs met. For more information on our FREE taster Term, being offered fornext term only, please contact us today. Telephone 01692 403143 or email [email protected]

Celebrating World Book Dayat St Nicholas House SchoolOn Thursday 6 March, pupils at St Nicholas House School celebratedWorld Book Day with a range of literary events throughout the day.

Children in Forms 2 and 3 followed a ‘Worst Witch’ theme for the day and pretended to betrainee witches and wizards at‘Miss Cackle’s Academy’. Theyspent a morning creating and writing their own spells and lateron conjured them up in the schoolgarden! Form 4 pupils brought intheir favourite books to show to

their friends and then wrote book reviews of them. The tempting aromaof teddy biscuits could be smelt from Nursery and Form 1 and theyounger children were later treatedto readings of stories written especially for them by the childrenin Form 5. In the afternoon all thechildren (and some of the teachers)changed into their pyjamas andonesies for a book mark makingcompetition and bedtime stories. A great day was had by all!

The quarter-final of the Handicap Doubles Cup took place at Antingham Village Hall as NWSCA’s Andy Beane (D), Tom Baldock-Yaxley (A) and John Vaughan (G) hostedCrosscourt’s John Welsh (G), Eric Dolden (L)and Derek Sidaway (K). With NWSCA onewin away from a semi-final berth, Baldock-Yaxley and Vaughan won the first set againstWelsh and Dolden (+10) on the sudden deathgolden point. The second set also reached 20-20, but this time Dolden fooled Vaughanwith a crafty serve to ensure Crosscourts survival. The NWSCA duo won the decidingset 21-17 and then the hosts took the one deadrubber that was played to complete their 6-2match win. Another home team was assured a place in the semis as two met in a derby quarter-final at North Walsham Sports Centre –NWSCB’s Dennis Elliott (B), Simon Halliday(D) and Paul Price (F) faced NWSCD’s JoeKirkup (E), Philip Stone (F) and Phil Mole (F).NWSCD won the opener but with Halliday’sserves a key factor NWSCB took a 3-1 lead.

NWSCD kept the pressure on by winning thenext two battles but in the end, the pivotal moment turned out to be in the first set of theeighth battle between Elliott and Halliday andKirkup and Stone (+4) as Elliott won fivepoints on his serve at 15-20 down. TheNWSCB duo won the golden point and tookthe second set 21-16 to seal their 5-3 victory. With NWSCA and NWSCB in different semis an all North Walsham final remains a possibility.

There was also a derby in the first division as NWSCA beat NWSCB 9-1 where all of Halliday’s singles went the distance with hispoint coming against Beane. At the ACT Centre, Aylsham A’s Dave Johns, John Millerand Peter Ward hosted NWSCD’s MarySawyer, Joe Kirkup and Edna Stone (playingup). Johns and Kirkup split the first two sets of the opener before the latter won a pivotalthird 14-12. The start of the fourth broughtsomething of a rarity – on very rare occasions

it is possible tosee three lets asthe ball hits thetop of the net, hereJohns served five in succession!Kirkup sealed his win 11-8 in that set beforegoing on to lose to Miller from two sets to one up before edging out Ward 12-10 in the decider. The smashes of Sawyer saw her keepin control as she beat Miller 12-10 in the third, but the rest of the match went Aylsham’s way –Stone battled bravely but lost out 11-9 in thefifth to Johns and the hosts won the remainingbattles in straight as Aylsham A won 7-3. Finally NWSCC’s Phil Mole, James Morterand Chris Johnson hosted Aylsham B’s HughRout, Neil Powell and Ian Potter in the seconddivision. Johnson beat Powell in five after originally being two sets up while Morter defeated Powell in four. Rout and Potter bothtook braces but a maximum from Mole set up a vital doubles which NWSCC won in five toedge the match 6-4.
