THE
WALKFOR HUNGER
A
OCIM will host the 2017 Walk for Hunger on Sunday, April 9th at 2pm at Little River Regional Park. It's a great way to fight hunger while burning off a couple calories! To top it off, it's fun for the entire family.
Registration will begin at 1:30 pm and walking begins at 2pm. Following the walk, there will be fun activities for everyone, including a butterfly garden, bird trail and a horseshoe pit.
Come out, bring your family and friends and enjoy some time together after the walk.
The proceeds from the walk will support the OCIM food pantry and the Meals on Wheels ministry.
This is always an event to remember. Every year, people of all backgrounds and ages come together to form a parade of hope. They walk to help, they walk to support, they walk for hunger! We would love to have you to be a part of this special occasion. You can donate, walk or sponsor.
T-shirts will be available for sale starting March 24th. For more information, call 919-732-6194, ext. 10. We hope to see you there!

SAMARITAN RELIEFEach year, the food pantry typically sees an increase in the number of
people assisted. On February 8, 2017, I decided to look back a litt le bit at
those increases. Starting with the year 2000, I looked at just February,
which is normally the quietest month. These numbers reflect only food,
not other pantry items such as baby and adult diapers, sleeping bags,
hats and gloves. It is pretty obvious now as to why we go through food so
quickly.
Please encourage your congregations, clubs, and neighborhoods to
invest in a healthy community. Regular donations to the food pantry are
needed to keep hunger, due to financial insecurity, out of northern Orange
County.
The closing of the food pantry in Roxboro, due to lack of financial donations,
is a good lesson to learn from; not only do food pantries need food donations,
they need cash to keep the power on.
Most non-profits are like other businesses in that you have the same facility
costs. With the help of many volunteers, personnel costs are kept at a minimum
but there still needs to be competent staff to oversee the operation and seek the
funds to keep the doors open.
Thank you to all of the donors and volunteers who give of their time, talent,
and treasure.
Peace,
Kay Stagner, Manager of Client Services

* Excerpts from the Weaver Street Market blog
WE?RE CELEBRATING TWO YEARS OF OUR COMMUNITY FOOD PARTNERSHIPS
"In two years, Weaver Street Market shoppers, owners, and workers have donated $216,000 for fresh groceries through the Community Food Partnerships.
In January 2015, WSM formed the partnership with four hunger-relief organizations? PORCH, TABLE, Interfaith Council (IFC), and Orange Congregations in Mission (OCIM)? as a way for the WSM community to help the organizations provide healthy food for those in need in our communities, particularly children, low-income families, and families in crisis. Rather than donate packaged and canned food, we asked our shoppers to donate the fresh healthy food they valued for their own families.
We?d like to create a sustainable funding source for our food partners.
We checked in with our food partners at the beginning of the year as we prepared for our 2017 food campaigns. What we heard was much gratitude for the WSM shoppers who continue to support the hunger-relief programs. There was also a humble acknowledgment that the organizations hoped they could rely on our food campaigns as a sustainable funding source. Each of the organizations wants to maintain the level of service it?s able to provide as a result of the Community Food Partnerships.
?Round Up!? Campaign Brings Fresh Vegetables and Fruit to the Food Pantries at IFC and OCIM.
Our 2015 ?Bags of Apples? campaign provided bags of apples for the families being served by IFC and OCIM for more than the estimated 12 months due to the excellent pricing we secured. For our 2016 campaign we switched to a ?Round Up!? food campaign in hopes of raising enough funds to provide additional fruit and vegetables for the pantries. We asked shoppers to Round Up! their total bill to the nearest dollar, donating the extra to the food pantries. More than 82,500 times our shoppers rounded up, for donations surpassing $43,500. That?s 234% higher than the previous year?s apple campaign."
OCIM?s Samaritan Relief Ministry is truly benefiting from the beautiful produce delivered each week to the pantry. Minutes after it is delivered, our volunteers are packing it into food orders.
Thank you, Weaver Street Market.
