The Eritrean-Ethiopian War lasted for 30 years
(1961-1991) Mengitsu Mariam was a high ranked officer
which lead the Mengitsu government into a more militaristic state.
Mengitsu government killed thousands of people in attempt of genocide
The Oromos were taken over by the Derg and Amharas

because Mawi’s family needed to come to America due to the affects this war had on them.

Mawi came from a refugee camp with little to
no finances to bring to America, so he was below the poverty line growing up.
