aclearindicationofwhatyouallwantandifwegetthegreenlightthenwewillsetupaneventscommitteethatnightandcallforvolunteers.

InOctoberwewillberunningaSpeedbuildcompetitionwhichshouldputJamesMay’spunyeffortstoshame!Togiveyouaheadstartonplanningyourstrategy,herearetherulesforthecompetition.Isuggestyoustudythescoringtablecarefully,asthereareseveralwaystocomeoutontop.Thekitisanewtoolandgoestogetherverywell.However,havingmadeabout40oftheseatModel-X,Icanrevealthattherearetwogotchas–Iwillleaveitatthat,butsufficetosay,youshouldkeeptheoldmodellingadage“testfittwiceandglueonce”inmind!Iwillbeadjudicatingonthenightandwillofcoursebecompletelyimpartial,butyoumayliketoswaymewithgiftsofinterestingplastic,researchmaterial,drinks,etc.etc!Seriouslythough,Ihopeeveryonehasagreattimeandmaythebestteamwin!

6)ScoringPointswillbeawardedforcompletingvarioustasksonyourmodel,accordingtothescoringtablebelow.Theadjudicatorwillawardthepointsattheendofthebuild.Paintingmustcoveratleast90%ofthepartwithonecoat.Paintschememustfollowthatshowninthekit(brown/greencamo+sky).
PaintingoftheinteriorofthewingisNOTnecessary(step4intheplans).Decalsmustbeonandplacedcorrectly.Theydonotneedtobeperfectlystraight,butwonkydecalsmaywellaffecttheresultintheeventofatie.
Therewillbenopro-ratapointsawarded–criteriamustbefullymetforthepoints.
PilotsandinteriorsmustbeshowntotheAdjudicatorforscoringbeforeclosingthefuselage–ifhecan’tverifyyourpaintingclaimsyoumaylosethepoints.

PRoCEss.Everymodelthatisplacedonthetablewillbeautomaticallyenteredintothemonthlycompetitionandtheresultswillbeenteredintoaleague.Theoutrightwinnerwillbethememberwhoachievesthehighestrunningtotalfortheyear(12monthcycle).

Wellthisisit.IdwelldownherewithmygrandsonKalebis,Valentinethecat,awholelotof‘DaddyLongLegs’andsolventaddictedcockroaches.Itain’tprettybutwhenI’mdownhereI’minagoodheadspace.I’vegotsomemodelsfinishedthatI’mveryhappywith.ButbecauseourhouseissmallI’veputthemawayinboxesdownheresomewhere.Ican’trememberwhenIlastsawthem.IactuallyinheritedthemadeupkitsofaircraftfromGraemeMansonbeforeheandRoxiemovedtoOz.Icouldn’tlethimthrowthemout.HetoldmetoputtheminKalebis’sroomsoI’mgoing
tomakehimamobiletohangfromhisceiling.
I’mactuallyluckytosaythatI’vegotmosteverymodelsubjectthatI’veever
wantedbuttimeispreciousthesedayswithraisingourgrandson,tryingtolookafterthehouseandputfoodonthetablethatIdon’tgetdownheremuch.I’vealsogotboxesofarmourfurtherbackunderthehouseandlookforwardtobuildingthemalso.MySharonisalwaysinterestedtoseewhatI’vedonewhenakitisfinished.She’smybestfriend.So,I’mgladtohaveshownyoumyManCaveanditwouldgoodtoseeandhearaboutyours.Wishingyouallgooddaysandmuchenjoymentinlife.

His1/72GermanE-Boatwasluckytoactuallymakeittothecomp.Itwascrushedbyastackofmagazinesthatfellfromashelf.ItthenflewoffthebackseatwhenJohnslammedonthebrakeswhiledriving.ThedamagereallyhadJohnuseallhisknowledgetomakethe
repairs.ThehardesttocompletewastheguardrailaroundtherearAAgun.WelookforwardtoyouputtingmoremarinesubjectsonthetableliketheU-Boatthat’sattheshop...LOOKINGATYOU-JOHN.

Background FighterspeedshadincreaseddramaticallyduringWW2;sobythewar’sendtheRAAFhadneedofamorepowerfulandfastertargettugthantheobsoleteBattleandVengeanceaircraftithadbeenusinginthisrole.TheBeaufighterMk.21wasalreadyinRAAFserviceandwaswellsuitedtomeetthisneed.ThefirsttargettugconversionoccurredinNovember1945,andfourteenmoreconversionsfollowedonfromthis.BeaufighterscontinuedtoserveinthetargettugrolewiththeRAAFuntilMarch1956.
Firstlook-theContentsTheconversioncomesinasturdyflip-topboxwithaprofileofatargettowingBeaufighteronthelid.Insidearethreezip-lockbagscontainingthepartslistedintheabovetable.Thequalityofresinpartsisverygood.ThePEfretsanddecalsalsoappeartobeverygoodqualityitems.Alsoincludedarenolessthan26A-4pagesofinstructions.RedRoogivesabackgroundhistoryoftargettowing
BeaufighterswiththeRAAF,andlistthereferencesusedtoresearchtheconversion.Theinstructionsdescribeeachstepoftheconversionprocessindetail.Theyalsoincludenumerousdiagrams,blackandwhiteandcolourphotosofrealaircraft,apaintandmarkingsguide,andaseparatepageoftemplates.Roundingthepackageoutisasheetofdecals.Itisobviousthataconsiderableamountofresearchhasgoneintothisconversion.Athoroughfamiliaritywiththeinstructionsisvital,asRedRoohaveleftnothingtochanceintheconversionprocess.Theinstructionsalsoadviseofthetoolsrequiredandtheneedfor
precisemeasuring.Thereareplentyofdiagramsandinstructionsdealingwithmeasurementsformakingholesandcuts,orplacingparts.Iamsurethatatrouble-freebuildshouldresultiftheinstructionsarefollowedprecisely.Towardstheirend,theinstructionsacknowledgethosewhomasteredtheconversionandassistedwithitsresearch.
theConversionBeforeaddressingtheconversionsitself,Ishouldmentionthattheinstructionscoverindepthvariousminordetailsthatwillallservetoenhancethefinishedmodel.Theseincludewingtiplights,
IDlightlocations,IFFantenna,flare-chutesandVerypistol-ports,lengthofgunbarrelprotrusion,cannontroughremoval,andfabricblankingpatches.ThisisindicativeofjusthowthoroughRedRoois,butIdonotwishtocomplicatemydescriptionofthemainconversionpartsbydwellingonthese.Therearealsoanumberofpartsunrelatedtothetargettowingconversion.Theseincludereplacement

locatingholesdrilledinthewingusingatemplateprovided.Afeatureofmosttargettugswastheuseofguardwiresaroundtheempennagetopreventthetarget’stowcablefromfoulingtheelevatorsandrudder.Thisdistinctivefeaturewilladdinteresttoatargettugmodel,butisonethatneedssomecaretoinstall.RedRooprovidescurvedPEcableguardsthatneedtobeplacedinslotscutin
thehorizontalstabilisers.Thereisalsoatriangularreinforcingplatetofiteithersideofthefinwheretheguardwiresattachbypassingthroughit.AsmallPEplatefitsunderneaththefuselageacrossthecentreline;itisherethattheguardwiresattachviaturnbucklestothefuselage.Theconversionprovidesmetallicthreadtomaketheguardwires,althoughsomemayprefertouseothermaterialsforthisjob.Red
RoothoughtfullyincludessparecopiesofthePEpartsusedforthispartoftheconversion.Amajorfeatureofthetargettugisofcoursethewinch.Thisrequiresthatareinforcingplatebecutfromtheplasticardincludedwiththesetandfixedtothefuselage.Ofcourse,theinstructionscoverallofthedimensionsandpositionofthispart.Theresinwinchwithitsimpellerattachedsimplyfitsontothereinforcingplate.Anothersignificantfeatureofthetargettugconversionisthetargetdrogue
chute;albeitthatthisislargelyinternal.Thisisthereasonfortheshortlengthofbrasstubethatcomeswiththeset.Thetubeneedstohaveitsexterioropenendchamferedforbetterscaleappearance.Thetubeinsertsintoaholecutinthefuselageundersideataslight83°angle;protrudingjustbelowthelineofthefuselage.Behindthissitsthemoreprominentpulleyfairingmadeofresin,sittingwithinwhichisaresinpulleymastthatlocatesontoapieceofwire.ThepulleymastmountsonanundersidehatchintheTamiyakit.Thehatch’s
hingeandoutlineneedmodification,andreinforcementwithaplasticstripontheinside.Thetargettugusedamodifiedobserver’scanopywithaflatrearpanelinplaceofthefullyblownitem.Thiswastogivethewinchoperatoraclearviewofthetargetandtowline.TheinstructionsprovideacoupleofoptionsastohowtomodifytheTamiyakitparttoreplicatethisflatpanel.Asmallreinforcingstripthatrunslengthwisejustbehindthewinchoperator’scanopyalsoneedstobemadefromplasticard.
Thereanumberofgeneralmodificationslefttodoinordertofinishtheconversion.Mostofthekit’scockpitbulkheadneedstobecutaway;aspresumablythetargettugdidawaywithprotectivearmourforthepilot.TherearePEcollectorringsupportstofittoaddfurtherauthenticitytothemodel.Eightoftheseareprovidedontwofrets,butonesetistoosmall,sotheinstructionsdirectthatthesebeignoredinfavourofthelargerset.Evenso,thereisstillasparepairofthelargertype.TheMk.21’sresinoilcoolersreplacetheMk.VIkititems.Theseincludesomefinemeshdiscsthataffixtoplasticdiscsbehindtheinlets.Theinstructionsrequireaholetobedrilledverticallythroughtheoilcoolerinletstoenabletheinsertionofashortlengthofwire.Thiswirerepresentsarodthatisquitenoticeableontheoriginalinlets.Overall,theoilcoolersshould
lookmostimpressivewhenfinished.TheInstructionsevenpointouttoalignthesmallholeinthewheelhubsatthe11-oclockposition,asthisistheentrypointforthebrakeline.
