Adult FaithFEAST OF THE EPIPHANY
OF THE LORD:SEEK AND YOU SHALL FIND
© Clare Colella
With the reading from Numbers proclaimed onJanuary 1 still ringing in my heart, I am reminded ofthe blessings of the Lord, who looks kindly upon usand gives us peace. Today's first reading from Isaiahechoes the promises of protection, care, light, gloryand abundance that attend to those who are faithful.
The feast of the Epiphany has many facets - manydifferent ways of reflecting on "Epiphany" - whichmeans "revelation, a showing forth or manifestation".So much more than its initial significance of thevisitation of the wise men (astrologers, perhaps) tothe Christ Child, this feast is also an occasion toconsider other manifestations of God in Scripture andin our world. Although Matthew's Gospel is the onlyone which recounts the story of the Magi, eachGospel speaks of ways in which Jesus, throughouthis life, is manifested as the Messiah, the Long-Awaited One.
This year, as we focus on the Gospel of Luke and theSpirit of Mercy, we will continue to encounter storiesof Jesus as the Son of God, teacher, healer and theOne who reveals to us the depth of the love andmercy of God the Father. A key aspect of this feast ofEpiphany is the proclamation that Christ is the lightof all nations, the Messiah come to redeem allpeoples and to offer salvation to all humankind. In itsdocument Lumen Gentium the Second VaticanCouncil affirms that all people may find salvation inthe radiance of God's light. The prayer of the Churchtoday, in the Preface of the Mass, proclaims that"Today you [God] revealed in Christ your eternalplan of salvation and showed him as the light of allpeoples." We pray in our Eucharistic prayer at liturgythat God gathers a people unto himself, from east towest, to make a perfect offering to the glory of God'sname.
The proclamation of God's manifestation, epiphany,is not just about ancient times, or only aboutChristmas time. During this season, there areinstances where time and again we re-discover thepresence of God among us ("Emmanuel") whether inour family or friendship circles or in our community. It is our gift of faith that leads us to remember eachday of the year that God is with us, and that we arecalled to be the manifestation of God's love andmercy to all.
