Sunday, January 1, 2017 - Mary, the Holy Mother of God
Happy New Year! As we usher in a New Year, we begin the year by commemorating Mary, the Mother of Jesus on New Year’s Day. It is a holy day of obligation, even when it falls on a Sunday as it does this year. We, here at the Basilica, who are always under the protection of Mary, join the rest of the Universal Church to honor Mary, the Mother of Jesus and our spiritual mother. By commemorating her on the first day of every new year, we symbolically place ourselves under her motherly protection for the rest of the year. Let’s pray that she will watch over our families and loved ones in all the coming months.
Because of the New Year’s Day holiday, there will be no coffee and donuts after the Sunday morning Masses this weekend. We will resume this on the first Sunday of February.
The rectory will be closed on Monday, January 2, in observance of New Year’s.
If you are making New Year’s resolutions, make sure to include one which will strengthen your spiritual life. For example, you might want to try getting to weekday Mass in addition to Sunday Mass OR, you may try getting to know your faith better by reading a spiritual book (we have some good ones in our Gift Shop), OR, you may try reading the Bible more often in 2017, OR you may want to volunteer a bit of your free time to a program that benefits others OR, (I like this one), you may want to get more involved in our parish in the coming year, OR you may want to really work hard at developing a virtue or spiritual strength that will make you a better Christian. Resolutions which help us improve physically are good, of course; but, even better are resolutions which help us grow in our faith and in our relationship to God. Try it in 2017!
Next Sunday, we celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany of the Lord, the Feast of the Three Kings. In keeping with our tradition here at the Basilica, the Three Kings will visit us at each Mass, and after Mass, near the Nativity scene, they will have a small gift for the young (and the young of heart) to celebrate their special day. May Jesus bless you and Our Lady of Victory watch over you.
Father Paul

Sacrament of Baptism: Our Parish offers a special Pre-Baptism preparation program for parents who desire to share their faith with their children. Parents-to-be must attend this class prior to the birth of their child. Baptisms are usually scheduled two times each month. Call the Rectory to register for classes. Godparents must be Confirmed and practicing Catholics. Non-parishioners are required to have a Letter of Recommendation to serve as a sponsor.
Sacrament of Marriage:
To be married in the Basilica, you must be an active parishioner for at least 9 months prior to setting a date. Engaged couples should contact the pastor before making other wedding arrangements. Couples are required to attend a Pre-Cana Conference, or equivalent pre-marriage preparation program.
Letters of Recommendation:
Recommendations to act as sponsors for Baptism or Confirmation can be issued only to registered members of Our Lady of Victory Parish who have received the Sacrament of Confirmation, attend Mass and receive Holy Communion regularly, have their children attending a Catholic school or Religious Education class. If married, the marriage must be in conformity with the regulations of the Catholic Church.
Devotions:
Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament begins immediately after the 12:10 p.m. Mass in the Basilica on Fridays and concludes with Benediction at 5:00 p.m.
First Friday:
On the eve of the First Friday of each month there are confessions from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. Mass is celebrated at 7:30 p.m. on First Friday.
Care of the Sick:
Please notify the rectory office for a visit to any family member who is sick, in the hospital or confined to home. Regular home Communion visits are usually on the First Friday of the month by a priest, deacon, or minister of the Eucharist.
Tours:
To schedule a tour of Our Lady of Victory Basilica, please contact Dianne Bosinski, Tours & Basilica Programs by email at [email protected] or by phone at (716) 828-9424.
Summary of the Readings Mary, the Holy Mother of
God
The blessing we experience in Christ Jesus is proclaimed in Numbers as the special blessing for the people of Israel. They and we are to be blessed by the invocation of God’s loving kindness, the shining glory of God’s face turned toward us in love, not away from us in anger. We are blessed by God’s own peace!
Our wish and our hope are fulfilled in this blessing, which is made visible in the coming of Jesus. In Jesus, the image of the invisible God, God’s face is shown to us and God’s presence is made known to us in faithful and loving kindness. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

As the celebration of Christmas continues, we take time to let the joy of Jesus’ Incarnation sink into our hearts. Jesus was given to us as the greatest gift. We were told that he would act with righteousness, that is, with concern for the good of all people. As we continue our ministry here at Our Lady of Victory School, we will encourage our students to think about this silently in their hearts and to quietly look for ways to serve others and those around us just as Jesus does for us each and every day. Happy New Year from Our Lady of Victory School!

Vocation Thought The Mary, the Holy Mother of God
Motherhood is a gift at the beginning of every life. After God, the first nurturing that we experience is from our mothers. Today we acknowledge and celebrate the motherhood of Mary, the Mother of God. Although the relationship that each of us has with our mothers on earth may be different, we can all count on the unfailing love and intercession of our Mother Mary. Pray with Mary as you discover God’s will in your life. Her aid will be a tremendous benefit. If God is calling you to a Church vocation, call Father Andrew Lauricella at 716-847-5535. You can also check out the “Priest of the Month” stories on our website at www.buffalovocations.org!
