Our liturgy is beautiful, ancient and yet does have aflow and change with time.

Recently our Holy Father,Pope Francis, officially ap-

proved a change in Eucharis-tic Prayers II, III and IV ofthe Mass to include thename of St. Joseph.

The additions, which inEnglish amount to five wordsinserted in the EucharisticPrayers, were issued by theVaticans Congregation forDivine Worship and the Disci-pline of the Sacraments. Thewords, "with blessed Jo-seph, her spouse", follow amention of Mary.

The change, in the worksunder former Pope BenedictXVI before his retirement, reflect the church's growinginterest in "fatherly care".

    "It's emphasizing that St.

Joseph was someone who protected the Blessed Virgin and who cared for Jesus. We call him thefoster father of Jesus, but we have to think of that word in the sense that he fostered the hu-manity of Jesus, he nurtured and helped Christ grow into an adult."

Back in 1962, just as Vatican II was getting started, Pope John XXIII had made the decisionto insert the name of St. Joseph into Eucharistic Prayer I. John XXIII died before the end of theCouncil. Following Vatican II, when additional Eucharistic prayers were adopted -- whether in-tentionally or because of all the changes being made at the time -- St. Joseph was inadvertently

not included in additional Eucharistic Prayers. When Pope Benedict XVI was pope, we receivednews that he was getting requests from people around the world asking to have St. Josephadded. He did what was necessary to get it done but left it to Pope Francis to approve.

Pope Francis hasn't shied away from his own interest in the saint. He chose March 19, thefeast of St. Joseph, as the date for his inaugural Mass, and has a flower on his coat-of-armssymbolizing the saint. "St. Joseph appears as a strong and courageous man, a working man, yetin his heart we see great tenderness, which is not the virtue of the weak, but rather a sign ofstrength of spirit and a capacity for concern, for compassion, for genuine openness to others, for love," Francis said at his inaugural Mass. As pope, Benedict, whose birth name is Joseph, also spoke highly of the saint after whom he was named.

The decree from the Vatican about the new prayers is titled "Fatherly Care", and describesSt. Joseph as "an exemplary model of the kindness and humility that the Christian faithraises to a great destiny, and demonstrates the ordinary and simple virtues necessary formen to be good and genuine followers of Christ".

There are some questions about what prayerful position should we take during the LordsPrayer. Before the recent changes in the liturgy there was some discussion about restoringthe ancient Orans position of prayer for the laity to the proclamation of the Our Father.

In Mass the Orans position describes the gesture whereby thepriest, during certain parts of his audible, leadership prayers at Mass, extends his arms out from his sides, with hands open and facing out.

Orans is the Latin word for Praying and is one of the most ancientof prayer positions in the Judeo-Christian tradition. This is how Christwould have prayed. The Orans position (sometimes called theorante), is easily distinguishable from when the priest folds or joins hishands, and which position is prescribed for the celebrant at severalpoints in Mass: for example, during the Opening Prayer and most of theEucharistic prayer.

With respect to the recitation of the Our Father during Mass, the cur-rent General Instruction of the Roman Missal speaks only to the gesture ofthe priest, not the congregation. After introducing the prayer with hands joined, says the gen-eral instruction in No. 152, the priest then pronounces the Our Father with hands extended.

The guidelines are silent as to what the laity does during the prayer. Therefore the Church doesnot instruct the Faithful to any particular posture during the Lords Prayer; some lay personsin the congregation adopting, notably during the Our Father, the Orans position as their own. Many Catholics are in the habit of joining each others hands in the Orans posture during theLords Prayer along with the celebrant. Some do this on their own as a private devotional posturewhile some congregations make it a general practice for their communities.

Are these practices permissible under the current rubrics, either as a private practice notsomething adopted by a particular parish as a communal gesture?

Again, no position is prescribed in the present Roman Missal for an assembly gesture duringthe Lords Prayer so what you do with your hands during the Lords Prayer is up to you!

As es co-mo Cristo hubiera orado.
