26-year-old was arrested by police and pleaded guilty in court to possessing thetaser weapon
A powerful stun gun disguised as an iPhone was seized from a Coventry man after he wasspotted with it in a park.
The 26-year-old was arrested in June in Nauls Mill Park, Radford.
Police were called just before 6pm to reports that a man had been seen in the park, offMiddleborough Road, with the taser.
After a short chase the man was arrested by officers, who found the weapon stashed in hispocket.
The defendant was charged with possessing the illegal weapon and appeared at CoventryMagistrates Court last month.
He admitted the charge and was ordered to complete 120 hours of unpaid work in thenext 12 months.
He also has to pay a £60 victim surcharge, costs of £85 and a criminal courts charge of£180.
Magistrates ordered that the stun gun iPhone should be destroyed.
Incredibly the weapon can be bought online for as little as £20 - despite the fact that theyare illegal in the UK.
One taser that can be shipped to the UK in just a fortnight emits a 7000kv shock andcomes with a built in flashlight.
Stun guns disguised as flashlights and even perfume bottles can also be bought onlinerelatively easily.
The weapons are relatively rare in Coventry but across the country reports of them beingused are becoming increasingly frequent.
In 2012 police estimated that there could be around 10,000 of the devices - the majority ofwhich are manufactured in China - on the streets of the UK.
In May a 17-year-old was arrested with one in East London and in July last year ahairdresser was jailed for three years when he was caught with one.
He told a court that he had bought the device for £10 from a market stall and didn’t knowthat it was illegal.
In the past three years the Metropolitan Police say similar weapons have been used 200times in a variety of offences including robberies, assaults and harassment.
As well as being illegal in the UK stun guns are also illegal in some US states and someEuropean countries.
