Youth Speaks at MEAChristmas InstituteA Celebration of Faith and Hope

While the Manila Episcopal Area of the United Meth-
odist Church continues to dwell with its missionto be faithful in the ministry of Jesus, the youths
desire to revive the Wesleyan fervor of experienc-
ing the amazing grace of God as they seek to share
in this mission. The resounding call to provide
life-changing events in the historical course of the
church becomes more relevant to continue to bring
unity and vision of a future with hope.
MEA CI 2010 serves as a living contribution of our
generation to the life and history of the church.
Our theme: We S.P.E.A.K. (We Seek. Pray. Empower.
Act. Keep) reects how God is moving through the
life of ordinary youths in order to bring forth Hismessage to the people. It is inspired by the story of
Jeremiah, who during his youth, was anointed by
God to speak to the nations (Jeremiah 1:5-10). It
is the same message that God brings to the young
people today! Thus, this gathering primarily sought
to recognize the important role of the youths in
the transformation of the church and society, af-
rm unity and solidarity in the mission and service
of the church, and provide fellowship among the
young people of the Manila Episcopal Area in cel-
ebration of its life and history.
A Place of Worship, Fellowship and Unity
Lectures, group dynamics and bible study charac-
terized this ve-day event. To maximize opportuni-
ty for learning and interaction, the delegates were
assigned to different medium groups for lectures
and workshops. Each medium group is comprised
by small groups designed for bible study and team
building activities. Activities for each day focused
on certain topic inline with the acronym of the
theme (Seek. Pray. Empower. Act. Keep). During thenight, the delegation converged in an open eld for
the Big Night Event consists of praise and worship,
production numbers and lecture which highlighted
the event. The Big Night has become a venue
for the expression of young peoples creativity as
it showcased their talents in dancing, theater and
music. A short lecture was also incorporated to syn-
thesize the learning for the whole day and expound
the theme of the Big Night Event. TURN to Page 4

Corner
*Of Coffee and College Graduations*
Kuh, a friend and classmate from College, set down
her half-empty coffee on the table between us. I
looked at her and said, if I only knew the stuff I know
now right when I started working, I would have maxi-
mized my PAG-IBIG fund and got myself a house!
She nodded and said yeah, sayang no? Hindi kasitinuturo sa university ang mga practical life skills.
Kuh and I were catching up with each other on our lives, in her case, in law school. We couldnt help but look back
at our lives after College. We have gone farther than when we started out. But somehow, not as far as we would
have wanted after college.
We usually spend four to ve years in College. Yung iba mas mahaba pa: may Magna at Suma! MAGNA-nine years
at SUMA-sampung taon na! We learn the intricacies of language. We calculate solutions to Math problems, may
kasama pang kamot sa ulo. We bury our heads among so many books in the library, minsan nakakatulog pa nga!
We spend sleepless nights writing term papers while drinking gallons of coffee, reviewing for exams and (gasp!) we
miss our favorite TV shows and hanging out with friends in our favorite tambayans.
Yet, the pains of studying pay off when graduation comes! During my last semester at the University, I had ve major
subjects! Imagine that! Akala ko di na ko makaka-graduate on time. I even contemplated ling a leave of absencehalf-way through the semester! But thankfully, I made it!
Thats why, unlike my batch mates, I decided to attend the University graduation on top of our College recognition
rites. Bakit?! Eto yung pagkakataon ko na maramdaman na aalis na ko sa University for good!
So there I was, feeling a bit disappointed that I didnt make it as a
cum laude, but still proud and elated nonetheless. Still, my par-
ents were beaming with joy! After all, I made it out of the univer-
sity in one piece.
For many of us, having a college degree is one of the rst major
accomplishments we could ever have in our young lives. When
we were at pre-school, we were so eager to get to the elementarygrades. Halfway through elementary, we couldnt wait to get to
high school. As if, in a race, we then become eager to nish high
school and run as quickly as we can to College.
Nung bata pa tayo, madalas itanong anong gusto mo paglaki? And we would answer: Doktor po! Abogado po!
Engineer po! Artista (sabay pose papogi). Whatever. Pero ngayon na malaki ka na at nakatapos na ng College,
madalas mo namang itanong mo naman sa sarili mo, ano ba talagang gusto ko?!
Akala natin, nish line na ang college graduation. Hindi pala. We ran through our education. Some friends dropped
out. But a lot of us nished the race. Only to nd out that college graduation is but the Starting Point of a bigger
race!
Potential Power
Gaya ng sabi ni Morpheus kay Neo sa pelikulang The Matrix, Welcome to the real world.
College is over. Whats next?
We need to look back to the lessons we learned from College. And Im not talking about Trigonometry formulas, or
how to make prcis, or the implications of Jose Rizals novels to the Katipunan revolution.

Not only had MEA CI 2010 harnessed the talents and
creativity of the youths, it also showed how rich
and blessed the United Methodist Church is in terms
of human resources. Including in the pool of speak-
ers for medium groups were around 70 passionate
workers and lay persons specializing on differentministries of the church who spoke on: Theme Expo-
sition, Prayer Power, Prophetic Mission and Advocacy
Groups. Around 200 workers, lay persons and senior
youths had also facilitated the Bible Study and team-
building activities, while more than 200 young people
served as staff.
Youth Corner...
A Call to the Ministry
Traditionally, the Christmas Institute serves as a venue for the youths to commit into a full-time
ministry. Many pastors and deaconesses of our church today are fruits of the Christmas Institute. True
to this, hundreds of young people responded to the call to become pastor, deaconess and to be intodifferent ministries of the church during the MEA CI. Countless young people have also come to accept
Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and savior.
Indeed, MEA CI has been a life-changing opportunity for the youths as they experienced Gods anoint-
ing and revival. For the 11 Annual Conferences that have their own stories of how God had provided in
order for them to join, this event serves as a living testimony. For the youth leaders who have sacri-
ced eight months of painstaking preparations for this event, MEA CI 2010 was not only a fulllment
of history it is the start of a new and long-term program ministry From the Youth, By the Youth and
For the Youth.
Young Peoples Ministries of GBOD provided funding, leadership, and assistance in planning the Manila
Episcopal Area Christmas Institute. CI gatherings happen each year throughout the Philippines and in
the US every year involving thousands of young people and their leaders in life-changing experiences
of leadership and faith.

Do you struggle with praying? I do. When my mind draws a blank and I dont know what to say or
what to pray for, I think of TACOS:
+ Thanksgiving: What are you thankful for? Family, friends, your home, your church -- the listgoes on. Start by thanking God.
+ Adoration:God is awesome! Adoration means worship or great and profound love. LetJesus know how much you love him.+ Confession: Prayer is a lot easier when we get rid of the barriers between God and us. We all sin.
In prayer, we can confess our sins and receive Gods forgiveness.
+ Others:So many people we know (and even those we dont) could use our prayers. Prayingmeans taking the focus off of ourselves and lifting up the needs of others.
+ Supplication: Pray for yourself and your own needs. These prayers should come last. Otherwise, we are tempted to spend all of our prayer time talking about ourselves. >>>>>>
