Pisa Parkinson Association is a small Association,
born in March 2017, with about 70 members, but
many people contact us by phone and email
In summary, these are our primary goals:
● bring out the needs of people with Parkinson's (patients
and their families)
● offer information and sharing (Parkinson Desk, mailing list,
website, Facebook, etc.)
● interact with local and regional Health Authorities.

The Parkinson Center of the University
Hospital of Pisa
In Pisa we have a Center for the diagnosis and treatment of Parkinson's
Disease which combines excellence in the clinic and in research.
Many people come to Pisa from all over Italy with consequent problems
of work overload for the operators.
The Associations of Pisa, Livorno and Lucca have reported to the
regional authorities asking for a strengthening of the staff of specialists.
Parkinson's Associations ask specialists and family doctors to take on a
global, multidisciplinary approach: to cure the patient and not just the
disease only and build a health and social assistance network.

Let us work together to build an integrated service network
This is the message we want to give
to our patients
● Even with Parkinson's, you can live well; there is no cure for
Parkinson's, but the quality of life can be preserved.
● Fight against the worst enemies: depression, a sedentary lifestyle,
isolation.
● Socialize, practice hobbies, cultivate your passions, etc.
● Adopt proper lifestyles:
- proper nutrition
- being active, but living quietly, avoiding stressful situations;
- set realistic goals
- make movement every day.
Depression is the most important factor
influencing the quality of life and health of
Parkinson’s patients.
Exercise program are an important therapy:
everyone with Parkinson’s Disease should be
exercising, starting as soon as possible after
the diagnosis.
Take care of yourself
and not only be cared
We should educate the patients to take care of
themselves with a targeted action plan.
Activities such as sport, walking, work in the gym,
breathing exercises, relaxation, meditation,
rehabilitation, occupational therapy, music therapy,
speech therapy, mutual aid groups, etc.) can delay
disability and slow down the loss of functionality.
With great savings for health spending!
The Little Vademecum to better face life with
Parkinson's Disease
With the Association of Livorno, we have written a small
leaflet, with advice and practical indications arising from
the direct experience of the patients, especially those
with many years of Parkinson's on their shoulders.
Our neurologists have offered us some valuable
suggestions and now they give it themselves to the
patients during the visit.

Parkinson's presents continuous
challenges
In Pisa we have one of the many Parkinson's patients facing incredible
challenges: this summer Sandro Paffi, 58, diagnosed in 2014, made a
motorcycle trip from Pisa to the Transfagarasan in Romania.
Other patients, not Pisans, have crossed Lake Iseo (Brescia) or the
Strait of Messina, and so on.
What is interesting is not the challenge itself, but the psycho-
physical preparation that preceded it.
This is the example they give to their brothers: a strong motivation
and an intense physical exercise to fight the disease.

Outdoor activities
This year, for the young and newly diagnosed patients, we
will organize small excursions with Sandro Paffi in the Pisan
Mountains on rough and uneven paths with ups and downs.

We have found great benefits from this activity.
The daily challenges of Parkinson's patients
But in their daily life Parkinson's patients face challenges that are no
less important and difficult and we are collecting their testimonials
through our website in Section: A friend writes to us ....
