Plattsmouth welcomes you! One of Nebraska’s oldest cities, Plattsmouth was founded in 1854. We are situated at the mouth of the Platte River where it flows into the Missouri River. History tells us the Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery camped several days in this area in the early stages of it’s two-year trek toward the Pacific Northwest.

City government offers outstanding municipal services, including a full-service police department, volunteer fire department and a combination paid/volunteer emergency medical services department that is staffed with well-trained paramedics capable of providing the highest level of pre-hospital emergency medical service. Through the Public Works Department, we offer water, sewer, storm water services, streets and parks. Recreation opportuni-ties include a great park system featuring Rhylander, Memorial and Garfield parks; Indian Springs Recreation Area; and a Missouri River boat ramp. The Plattsmouth Community Center offers a full range of fitness and com-munity recreation opportunities. Our public library has a collection of more than 40,000 books, magazines, CDs/DVDs and other electronics, a computer lab, and quiet gathering and reading areas.

The Main Street Entertainment Plaza features an outdoor stage on South Fourth Street off Main Street with activities planned on Friday and Saturday evenings May through September. Events are free and family-oriented.

July 31 is the Taste of Plattsmouth Business Expo, featuring local vendors that will have amazing food and beverages available so everyone can taste what the city has to offer. Local businesses will showcase their services with expo booths. Held at the Entertainment Plaza at Fourth and Main Streets in downtown Plattsmouth, this event draws large crowds and features live music and a fun atmosphere.

Music Festival is July 23 to 25 at Sokol Park, 905 Allied Road in La Platte. This three-day live-music festival will offer plenty of music plus food and art vendors. Day passes are $20 and include overnight camping. For information, band lineup and tickets go to hullabaloomusic-festival.com.



SeptemberThe Plattsmouth Harvest Festival, formerly known as the Kass Kounty King Korn Karnival, is the oldest annual harvest festival in Nebraska. Now in its 84th year, the family-friendly event is four days of pageantry, parades, carnival rides, antique tractor show and races, craft fair, car show and shine, contests and games, and

lots of entertainment for all ages. This year’s festival is scheduled for Sept. 10 through 13 in Plattsmouth.

Cruise on down to historic Main Street in downtown Plattsmouth Oct. 2 for the annual Cruizin’ Main celebra-tion. More than 350 cars are expected at this show and shine. The streets start filling with cars about 5 p.m. Local food vendors will serve great food to make sure the crowds of people have plenty to eat.

Round Up at the Roundabout, on Oct. 24, is located just north of the roundabout at Eighth Avenue. This fun event is for the whole family and includes free food, bounce houses and other activities. Kids can trick or treat in their costumes to the different local merchants and service providers.



Victorian Christmas on Main, Nov. 28, is a warm way to celebrate the holiday season. There will be hayrack rides, pony rides, horse-drawn carriage rides and a reindeer petting zoo. Father Christmas will also be at the celebration, with plenty of music and food featured throughout the downtown area. Many businesses will be open with shopping deals and refreshments throughout the event. There is caroling and a tree-lighting ceremony at the Cass County Museum. The log cabin and caboose at the end of Main Street will be decorated and open.

Plattsmouth has a positive business envi-ronment for new and existing businesses. The Plattsmouth Chamber of Commerce, Cass County Nebraska Economic Develop-ment Corporation and the Plattsmouth Main Street Association work together with the City of Plattsmouth for Economic Development and Community Promotion.

The city is very active in driving new busi-nesses to locate in and existing businesses to expand in Plattsmouth. A new retail center has been developed along Highway 75. The center is anchored by a Hy-Vee grocery store that opened in December of 2013.

“There is additional room for growth in the subdivi-

sion, which CCNEDC is actively promoting,” said Lisa A. Scheve of the Cass County Nebraska Economic Development Council. “Additionally, with continued improvement to the Highway 75 corridor we will see new development along that highway.”

According to Scheve, the CCNEDC offers assistance to business through research on state and local incentives that might be available for new and expanding business and their employees to help with continued training and job growth. “We would find ways to get your business con-nected on a local, state and federal level,” said Scheve.

As a recruiting and retaining tool, financial assistance from the city is available and based, in part, on the number of jobs that will be created or retained. Busi-nesses that may be eligible for assistance included those whose source of income is from manufacturing; research and development; processing, storage, transport or sale of goods or commodities; services; tourism; telecommu-nications; and headquarters facilities. For specific rules of qualification, check with the City of Plattsmouth.

A major redevelopment project in the Plattsmouth Main Street Historic District included new sewers, new sidewalks, new lighting and more, making the downtown blocks (listed on the National Register of Historic Places) more colorful and lively. Several shops and dining opportunities await visitors to the charming blocks of downtown.

A city-owned industrial park — Four-Mile Industrial Park, which has a few businesses already — is under being further developed as the city works to make the park sites shovel ready for light industry and manufacturing facilities. “As we talk with companies they know we are doing everything we can to make Plattsmouth a great choice for their new location,” said Scheve.

PlattsmouthEDUCATION

There are great schools in Plattsmouth, both public and private.

The Plattsmouth Community Schools is an accredited public school district that offers education for students from kindergarten through 12th grade. The district also has an early-childhood/Head Start program.

Community-supported schools in Plattsmouth began in 1857, about three years after the city was founded. In 1868, Plattsmouth elected its first public board of education.

Since that time, the district has seen many changes in its elementary, middle and high schools. The student population of the district has remained fairly stable after seeing growth in past years.

Under the leadership of Dr. Richard E. Hasty, superinten-dent/special education director of Plattsmouth Community Schools, the community-focused district strives to offer high-quality, diverse educational opportunities to students and build bright futures for them.

Hasty points to the accomplishment of students as proof of the district’s commitment to them.

“Our students have received many awards and scholarships for academic, athletic and fine arts accomplishments. I believe all of these awards reflect the high quality of our programs from early childhood to the high school,” Hasty said.

Illustrating the district’s commitment to its students, outdoor classrooms were installed at the early childhood center and the elementary school. The early childhood program is recognized by the Nebraska Department of Education as a model program for positive behavior supports. The elementary 21st Century before and after school program consistently receives some of the highest ratings of any programs in Nebraska. A middle school 21st Century after school program was recently started to support students and families.

Private schoolsPlattsmouth also has two

private schools. St. John the Baptist, a Catholic primary and middle school, offers pre-kindergarten through

grade 8. First Baptist School offers a Christian-focused

education from kindergarten through grade 12.


PlattsmouthEDUCATION

The district purchased the former A & M Green Power John Deere building, adjacent to the high school, and converted it into the Plattsmouth Academic Curriculum and Equipment Complex. This allowed the district to expand its vocational education and GED programs. The district is fortunate to have one of very few high school diesel mechanic programs in the nation. Plattsmouth High School also has the only High School of Business program in Nebraska. In 2014-2015, the district implemented a learning initiative that includes laptops for all students in grades 9-12.

With the widening of U.S. Highway 75, the population of Plattsmouth is expected to increase, according to Hasty. The school district is making plans to accommodate the expected growth.

A new sports complex, Plattsmouth Activities Complex for Kids (PACK), is nearly complete. On the grounds of the high school, the PACK will meet the needs of a growing student population and help enhance academic, fine arts and athletic experiences for students.

According to the district, the complex “will improve outdoor opportunities throughout the year for students in physical education, marching band, boys and girls soccer, football, softball, baseball and track.” The new complex has been made possible through many contributions from across the Plattsmouth community.

The school district also received two very exciting grants, Hasty said. One grant provided for construction of a greenhouse on the high school grounds. The other grant facilitated construction of a community walking trail on the perimeter of the high school campus.

Staying true to the district’s focus on education and community, both projects will, according to Hasty, allow the district to “increase educational opportunities for students, while engaging our community, as we seek to grow partner-ships with local businesses.”

marching band, football, baseball and softball. This is also a walking

trail around the high school campus.

Some of the center’s amenities include: a four-lane heated pool, an indoor track, group fitness room, basketball/volleyball gymnasium and a fitness/wellness area with free-weight equipment, 13 weightlifting stations and new cardiovascular machines. Free WIFI and wallet lockers are now available to all center guests.

Twin Rivers Water Park is open from late May to early August. It is open daily from noon to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Community Center members receive a 10 percent discount on water park passes.

Plattsmouth Senior Center is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and is located at the Community Center.

Congregate meals are served at noon Monday through Friday for a sug-gested donation of $4.

The senior center also offers meals to be delivered with the Meals on Wheels program.

The center hosts weekly card games, fitness classes (subject to change), healthy programs and other activities throughout the year.

There is plenty of fun and recreation to be had in the Plattsmouth area.

If you are eager to get the kids outside, one of Plattsmouth’s parks might just be the place to go. Each of the city’s parks offers some-thing interesting for kids of all ages.

Rhylander Park, named for a former mayor, is Plattsmouth’s largest park and runs along Lincoln Avenue from Third to 11th Avenues. Some of its features include playground equipment, a walking path, volleyball courts and soccer fields.

Near the center of Plattsmouth is Garfield Park at Fifth Street and Second Avenue. Garfield has, among other amenities, play-ground equipment, a picnic area and a lighted gazebo.

If a round of golf is more your speed,

there are two golf courses

in the area for you. Bay Hills Golf Club and Lake Ridge

Golf Course are great places to spend an afternoon.

Memorial Park is in the south-west part of the city at Fourth Avenue between 15th and 18th Streets. It features a Frisbee golf course, playground equipment, a covered picnic area and a softball field.

Adjacent to Memorial Park on 18th Street is the city’s skate park. On South 18th Street, behind the Community Center, is Indian Springs Recreation Area.

Indian Springs offers, among other things, a fishing lake with a handicapped-accessible fishing pier. Tennis courts are available at Bradford Drive and Queens Way.

Plattsmouth Boat RampIf you are up for some boating, the city has a dock at the river. Head out from the east end of Main

Street onto Dock Road to the river. Drop your boat in for an afternoon of river fun.

If you are looking to get wet, the city offers Twin Rivers Water Park, located just west of Memorial Park at 18th Street and Fourth Avenue. The park is open from late May to August. Hours of operation are noon to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. seven days a week throughout the summer. The facility contains a modern pool area and other family-friendly amenities.

A zero-depth to 3-foot-swimming area con-tains several water fountains, umbrellas and water toys. There is another swimming area of 4 to 6 feet deep and also a 12-foot-deep diving area with diving board. A spiral water slide empties into a 3-foot-deep pool. The diving area contains a water speed slide that propels swimmers toward the bottom of the 12-foot-deep area. Swimming lessons are offered throughout the summer.

PlattsmouthHISTORY

The birth of Plattsmouth began in 1852 when Samuel Martin built a trading post on the western edge of the Missouri River. He erected a two-story home and another building from which he traded. Martin also operated a ferry from Coonsville, the present-day Glenwood, Iowa.

A town-company was formed on Oct. 26, 1854. The following March, the town was incorporated and named the county seat for Cass County. The first town mayor, Wheatley Mickelwait, was elected in 1857.

When Plattsmouth was founded, the Missouri River’s close proximity to the east end of Main Street brought extensive trade. Ferries carried pas-sengers across the river, and paddlewheels docked at the town’s riverfront. Overland freight became a big industry for the town. The route out of Platts-mouth, having fewer Platte tributaries to cross, was

PlattsmouthHISTORYpreferred by many to haul supplies, both military and civilian, to western outposts.

At the outbreak of the Civil War, Robert Livings-ton recruited company A of the First Nebraska Volunteer Regiment and in October 1862 became the regimental commander.

After the war, Livingston persuaded the Burling-ton and Missouri River Rail Road to make Platts-mouth its Nebraska headquarters. Construction of the rail line from Plattsmouth to Lincoln and west to Kearney Junction began in early 1869. By December the first passenger trains were running, crossing the Missouri by ferry until 1880, when a bridge was completed. Meanwhile the Burlington built shops in Plattsmouth. By 1900 employment at the shops reached a peak between 1,000 and 1,200.

Although the territorial legislature designated

Plattsmouth the Cass County seat in 1855, it wasn’t until 1888 that a majority of county citizens voted Plattsmouth the seat. The court-house cornerstone was laid in June 1891 and the Romanesque-style edifice completed in 1892. It remains “the” Plattsmouth landmark.

Car ferries across the Missouri River were replaced in 1930 by a steel truss vehicular bridge, carrying U.S. Highway 34.

Since 1931, the Kass Kounty King Korn Karnival has been held every year, with the exception of WWII. In 2013 it was renamed the Plattsmouth Harvest Festival.

Plattsmouth has had its share of disasters. In June 1961 the Riley Hotel and Parmele Theater, built in 1890 and 1903 respectively, were destroyed by fire. Up from the ashes, the hotel property became the Cass County Bank, and the theater site was added to the Historical Society museum next door.

In 1985 the Plattsmouth Down-town Historic District was cre-

ated with 42 buildings placed on the National Register of Historic Places; plaques describe each historic structure. As one of the Midwest’s Victorian-era architectural gems, the district has attracted national notice. In 2010-2011, the downtown area underwent extensive landscap-ing, including the creation of an entertainment plaza, where crowds gather summer weekend evenings for live entertainment.

Expansion of U.S. 75 linking Plattsmouth north to the Omaha-Council Bluffs metropolitan area assures easy access and continued growth.
