We’ll getreports on the research presented at ASCO, the2010 Breast Cancer Symposium, and the SanAntonio Breast Cancer Symposium, as well as areview of the best papers published in 2010.
I am delighted that so many of you are joining usfor our pre-meeting program on Wednesday andThursday. I am sure that you will find that mak-ing the time to take advantage of this additionaleducational opportunity is well worth the effort.
I also look forward to seeing many of you Thurs-day afternoon for our popular annual Codingand Reimbursement symposium, which will befollowed by the satellite symposium on neoadju-vant therapy in endocrine-responsive breast can-cer. Don’t miss Thursday night’s openingreception, where you can spend time with yourcolleagues in a social atmosphere, while getting afirst look at this year’s commercial exhibits.

On Saturday our focus on research continueswith Dr. C. Kent Osborne’s keynote address,“Blocking HER2 for Breast Cancer Treatment:A Successful Research Paradigm for Develop-ment of Targeted Therapies,” the lunchtime Sci-entific Poster Forum, and Part II of the ScientificSession oral presentations. You’ll hear a panel ofexperts discuss their approaches to treatment atSaturday’s Community Tumor Board. Saturday’sprogram also includes an entire session dedicatedto breast cancer staging in the molecular era, aswell as a mini-consensus that will evaluate themanagement of the axilla in light of theACOSOG Z0011 trial.
After a full day of educational sessions on Satur-day, you’ll be ready for a fun-filled evening at thePresident’s Gala! This symposium will focus on the cur-rent and emerging role of neoadjuvanttherapy for endocrine-responsive earlybreast cancer, including the use ofgenomic signatures for optimal treat-ment selection. The activity consists ofdidactic lectures and a debate and allowsaudience participation through ques-tion and answer sessions.
Upon completion of this educa-tional activity, participants should be able to:
• Analyze the role of neoadju-vant therapy in endocrine-responsive breast cancer
• Review current neoadju-vant treatment strategiesused in endocrine-responsive breast cancer
• Assess the role of gene expressionprofiles in selecting optimal neo -adjuvant therapy for patients withendocrine-responsive breast cancer
This educational activity is supported by
Genentech BioOncology and Genomic Health,
Inc. There is no fee to attend this activity or to
obtain continuing medical education credit.

What, if any, new technologies can be added to mammog-raphy, breast ultrasound, and breast MRI to improve ourability to diagnose, locally stage, and follow patients withbreast cancer? Drs. Jochelson and Tafra will discuss newmodalities, such as digital tomosynthesis, contrast enhancedmammography, PEM, BSGI, breast CT, and new MRIsequences, such as spectroscopy and diffusion weightedimaging, and what they can and cannot be used for.
B3 Hereditary Breast Cancer
Kevin Hughes, MD, Steven Narod, MDWashington Room 3, Exhibition Level
Women at high risk of hereditary breast cancer will benefitfrom more aggressive screening, chemoprevention strategies, and prophylactic surgery, potentially decreasing the morbidityand mortality of this disease. Drs. Narod and Hughes willdiscuss the identification of these women in your practice, the value of genetic testing, and the efficacy of various treat-ment and prevention strategies.
B4 Ipsilateral Breast Cancer Recurrence: Predictors,Diagnosis, and Management
Judy Boughey, MD, Henry Kuerer, MD, PhDVirginia Suite B, Lobby Level
The incidence of ipsilateral breast cancer recurrence hasdecreased due to better imaging and improving systemictherapies. Drs. Kuerer and Boughey will review the diagnosisand predictors of breast cancer recurrence and end with adiscussion on the management of this entity with a focus onnew clinical trials and evidence that mastectomy may notalways be indicated.
B5 Complementary and Alternative Therapy in Breast Cancer
Beth DuPree, MD, Debu Tripathy, MDWashington Room 4, Exhibition Level
Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is of greatinterest and used commonly by patients with breast cancer.Modalities ranging from exercise and meditation to home-opathy, herbal medicine, and acupuncture have varying levelsof evidence to support or discourage their use. Drs. DuPreeand Tripathy will review the data behind commonly usedforms of CAM and provide a framework for future researchthat could integrate some of these approaches into the stan-dard of care to improve patient outcomes.
B6 Breast Screening: Who Gets What—Mammography, Ultrasound, MRI
Wendie Berg, MD, PhDMaryland Suite A, Lobby Level
Addition of MRI or ultrasound to mammography willincrease cancer detection in certain subgroups of women andwill also increase false positives. Dr. Berg will discuss evolvingguidelines and evidence for supplemental screening ofwomen at increased risk for breast cancer.
B7 Defining and Measuring Quality of Care in Breast Surgery
Cary Kaufman, MD, Jeffrey Landercasper, MD Washington Room 5, Exhibition Level
Multiple national quality initiatives addressing the quality ofcare provided to patients with breast disease have been devel-oped. Information will be provided about the value of theseprograms, including The American Society of Breast Sur-geons’ Mastery of Breast Surgery program. Methods to auditand improve quality of care locally, regionally, and nationallywill be presented as well.
