Thinkingaboutflowersandfloweringshrubs,nowisthetimetopruneyourWisteria,cuttingbacksummerside-shootsto2or3buds.TowardstheendofFebruaryprunesummer-floweringClematisbeforeactivegrowthbeginsCutbackshrubssuchasCornusandSalixcultivars(grownfortheircolourfulwinterstems)downtotheirbases.

Cutbacktheoldfoliagefromornamentalgrassesbeforegrowthbegins-clipthemtowithinafewcentimetresoftheground.PruneoverwinteredfuchsiasbacktooneortwobudsoneachshootandalsoWinterFloweringJasmine(Jasminumnudiflorum)afterfloweringtoencouragenewgrowthfornextyear'sblooms.Cutbackthepreviousyear’sgrowthto5cmfromtheoldwood.PrunewinterfloweringshrubssuchasMahoniaandViburnumxbodnantenseaftertheircolourfuldisplayhasfinished.

Trimwinter-floweringheathersastheflowersdisappear,topreventtheplantsbecomingleggy.Removeanyfadedflowersfromyourwinterpansiestostopthemsettingseed.Thiswillencourageaflushofnewflowerswhentheweatherwarmsup.Liftanddividesnowdropsstill'inthegreen'ifyouwanttomovethemorcreatemoreplants.NowisalsothetimetoplantLiliesandAlliumbulbsandalsobarerootrosesneedtobeplantedinasunnypositionforspectacularsummercolour.Inp reparationforvegetablegrowing,startchittingearlypotatoes-standthemonendinamoduletrayoreggboxandplacetheminabright,cool,frost-freeplace.

Forcerhubarbplantsforanearlycrop.Alsoplantnewrhubarbcrownsnow.MulchperennialvegetablessuchasAsparagusandArtichokeswithwell-rottedmanureorgardencompost.Startsowingvegetableseedssuchasleeks,onionsandceleriacundercovernow.Preparevegetableseedbedsbyremovingallweedsandforkinginplentyofcompost.Coverpreparedsoilwithsheetsofblackplastictokeepitdrierandwarmerinpreparationforspringplanting.IalsostartmytomatoseedsnowinthepropagatorbutIgrowthemonintheconservatoryastheyneedtokeepwarm.Ifyoudon’thaveanywherewarmandlighttogrowthemondelaystartingthemuntilwellintoMarch.

Inthefruitgarden,cutautumn-fruitingraspberrycanestothegroundtostimulatenewcanes,whichwillfruitintheautumn.Cutthetipsofsummer-fruitingraspberrycanesthathavegrownbeyondthetopoftheirsupports;cutjustaboveabud.Continuetoplantraspberrycanesforthecomingsummer.Pruneappletreesandpeartreeswhilstthey'restilldormant.Leaveplumtrees,cherrytreesandapricotsuntilthesummeraspruningthesefruittreesnowwillmakethemsusceptibletoSilverLeafdisease.IkilledabeautifulVictoriaPlumtreebypruningtooearlyintheyear.Pruneblackcurrantbushes,gooseberriesandredcurrantstomaintainaproductiveframework.Currantbushescanalsostillbeplantedbetweennowandthespring.Mulchfruittreeswithwell-rottedmanureorgardencomposttakingcarenottomoundmulchuparoundthetrunk.

Instructions

• Heatoilinapanovermediumhighheat.Addgarlicandginger,cookfor1minute.Addonionandcookfor6-8minutesoruntilgoldenandcaramelised.

• Addcoriander,turmeric,cuminandpaprika.Cookfor1minute.• Addchickenstockandtomato.Stirtocombine,bringtosimmerandcookfor5minutes.• Addcauliflowerandchickpeas.Cookfor15minutesoruntilcauliflowerissoftandsaucehas

Itwaslovelytoseesomanyresidentsfromallaroundthevillageatthe’LightupPrestonBrook’EventthisChristmas.ThiswasourfirstjointChristmasventurewithTheVillageHallandweweredelightedsomanysharedtheeveningwithus.IwouldliketosayapersonalTHANKYOUtoallourresidentswhocateredfortheeventmakingsomefabuloushotfoodtowarmusaftersingingtoFrodshamSilverBandandallthevolunteerswhohelpedtomaketheeveningasuccess.

Wheredoesthetimego?Itisnow5yearssinceFriendsofBridgewaterGreenformedandbeganenhancingTheGreen.Please,ifyouareabletogivealittletimetohelpusmaintainthisareafor

theenjoymentofallinourcommunity,docomealongandhelp.Youdon’thavetoliveonBridgewaterGrangewe’dlovetoseenewmembers.

Wemeetupabout4timesayearforanhour,twoatmostforasocialgettogetheronTheGreenandcarryoutalittleweeding,pruningwhateverseasonaltasksareneeded.Bringalongyourownrefreshmentsandhaveanatterwhilstgettingsomefreshairandexerciseatthesametime.ThebulkyworkisdonebyHaltonBoroughCouncilandtheGrassismaintainedfortnightlyduringtheseason.

SomeofuscanalsobeseenfromtimetotimedoingtrimmingandtidyinguptokeepTheGreenlookinggood.WealltakeaprideintheareaasPrestonBrookParishCouncilhavesupportedthisresidentGroupinobtainingthefundingtomakethespacewhatitistoday.Itusedtobeanovergrownboggygrassland,mainlydescribedasarubbishtipcoveredindandelionsandwascertainlynotattractivetolookat-notanareayouwouldwanttobeproudofattheentrancetoyourhousingestate.

PrestonBrook&DistrictHistoryGroupWecommencedourautumnseasonwithaveryinterestingtalkon“WarringtonthroughMaps”byPhillipJeffs,ArchivesandHeritageOfficer,fromWarringtonMuseum.Hegaveusafascinatinglookbackintolifeandtheshapeoftheoldtownhundredsofyearsago,beforetheheavyindustrialerathroughtopresentdayalmostcitysize.ThiscanallbefollowedupintheWarringtonLibraryalongwithmanyotherinterestingfactsaboutourlocallife.TheninOctober,afterourAnnualMeeting,ourChairmanGeorgeSwiderskiintroducedAnthonyAnnakin-Smith.HegaveusaveryinterestingtalkabouttheSlaveShipsofNeston&ParkgateontheWirral.Thiswasaneye-openertowhathappenedonourdoorstepinthepast.NovembergaveusaveryinterestingtalkaboutJosephPaxton’sCrystalPalacebyDavidHill.JosephPaxtonbeinganEnglishGardener,ArchitectandamemberofParliament,bestknownfordesigningtheCrystalPalace.InDecemberweenjoyedourAnnualChristmasDinnerwithmuchmerriment,whichthisyearwasatTheGeorge&DragoninBudworth.PleasecomeandjoinusonThursday17thJanuaryattheLewisCarrollCentre,AllSaintsChurchDaresbury7.45pm.Thetopicwillbeabout“UnearthingCheshire’sQuakerCommunity”byClaireMoores.Followedbyteaandrefreshments.Ifyouneedanyfurtherinformationaboutourgroup,[email protected]&BROWNIEUNIFORMSWearedoingaprojectinourLocalHistoryGroupofYouthThroughTheAgesinUniform.IaminterestedinpastuniformsoftheGuidesandBrownies.WewouldbegratefulifyouhaveanyoldphotographsofGuideorBrownieuniformsthatwemaycopyforourdisplay.Itisfascinatingtoseehowthedesignshavechangedtosuiteachgenerationintheiractivities.AlsoanytakeninlocalactivitiessuchasGalaDaysthatwerepopularmanyyearsago.InterestinglythefirstBrowniePackinCheshirewasstartedbyMissRumneyinWhitleyaround1924.TherewasaGuideHutinhergardenwheretheyhadweeklymeetingsuntiltheymovedtotheVillageHall.YoumaycontactSueonsukipot45@googlemail.comAnyideasonhowwecanimprovegreenspacewithinPrestonBrookTheparishcouncilhaverecentlymanagedtosecureintheregionof£22,500infundingfromthecommutedsumfromtheShepherdsFolddevelopmentnear02.Weareseekingtheinputfromresidentstosomerealisticandinspirationalprojectideaswhichwecanlooktofundandimplementin2019/20.Allideaswillbeconsideredandvoteduponandwillbeprioritisedbaseduponimpactandfinance.AnyideasaremostwelcomedandshouldbesenttotheClerkpbpc@hotmail.co.ukorcomealongtoournextmeeting

WehadsomefabulousChristmascelebrations.Thepartywasattendedbyaspecialmaninaredsuit!andwasenjoyedbyall.TheNativityPlaywasfantastic.Despitehavinglowernumbersonrollthanpreviousyears,thestaffmanagedtoputonafullnativityproduction.

MaryandJosephactedbeautifully,sheepandangelswerefab,kingsrodetheirhorseswellandtheinnkeeper,donkeyandstarwereawesome.Thenativityismyfavouritetimeoftheyear.Itisjustlovelytocompletetheperformancetosuchahighstandard(aftermanypractices)

Ouroutsideareaislookingalittletired.Iamdelightedtoreportthatfollowingasuccessfulgrantapplicationthegardenisgoingtoberenovated.Wearelookingforwardtotheworksstartingsothatwecanenjoytheoutsideareaagain.

Thistermourtopicsinclude‘afterChristmas’petsandbirdweek(supportingtheRSPBsurvey)andofcoursecelebratingChineseNewYear.

IamhappytoalsobesupportingsomestudentsfromAshleySchoolwhoarecompletingsomeworkexperiencehoursinthegardenarea.Theyhavebeenworkingreallyhardareamakingadifference.

ProposedboundarychangestoPrestonBrookTheindependentLocalGovernmentBoundaryCommissionforEnglandisaskinglocalpeoplefortheirhelptodrawupanewpatternofcouncilwardsforHaltonBoroughCouncil.ThefirstdraftofthiswaspresentedtotheparishcouncilinJune2018,principallythisseenPrestonBrookretainingitscorelinkwithDaresburyasaward–thecouncilwerehappywiththisanddidn’tsubmitanycomments.However,itsseconddraftreleasedinDecemberissomewhatdifferent–itnowproposesaremovalofPrestonBrookfromDaresburyandsitsitwithBrookVale.Theycan’tconcludeanameatthispointbutitsproposedasPrestonBrook&Vale.Thisissomewhatconcerningforthecouncilandseescorelinksdevelopedacrossthewardovermanyyearsliterallyjustpulledapart.ThecouncildiscussedandagreedaformalobjectiontothisproposalwithitsdeadlinebeingFebruary11th.Wewillkeepyouappraisedofprogresshowever,wouldencourageallresidentstoconsidertheproposalandplacetheirownobjections–ifyouchooseto.Formoreinformationseethefollowinglinkhttps://consultation.lgbce.org.uk/node/13208
