Advent:ASeasonofHope,Love,Peace&JoyLastmonth,duringthefourweeksofAdvent,wepreparedforthe celebration of Christ’s birth through prayer and reflection.Whilewe,amidthe flurryofChristmaspreparations, lookedforpractical ways to observe the holiness of the season in oureverydaylives.OneofthepracticalwayswastohaveanAdventRetreat.TheAdventRetreatwasofferedonSaturday,December14thatthe Pastoral Center in Braintree. Fr. Shawn led the retreat toguideusnineparticipantsonourAdventjourneyandreflections.We attended a daily Mass at the Pastoral Center chapel. Afellowshiplunchwasprovided.Adventmeans ‘Coming’ in Latin. This is the comingof Jesusinto theworld. DuringAdvent, aswe prepared for fourweeksbefore Christmas and remembered the real meaning ofChristmas, we emphasized on looking for hope, focusing onpeace,expressingjoy,andsharinglove. Then,weexaminedourthoughts,reflectedmore,andprioritizedourspirituallives.MaytheGodofhopefillyouwithalljoyandpeaceinbelieving,sothatyoumayaboundinhopebythepoweroftheHolySpirit.

SeniorDeafWellnessProgram(SDWP)The program will be held on January 7th at 9:30a.m. in theParish Center at SacredHeart Church inNewton. Wewill beplaying Bingowith a chance towin some nice prizes. PleaseRSVP Betty so she can get a count for lunch, soup andsandwiches. Cost is $10. Wewillmeet upstairs in the roombehind the stage. “SAINT”OFTHEMONTHPart2Dana Laffersova from Lipniky, Slovakia visited the Boston Deaf CatholiccommunityduringOctober31toNovember5,2019. Wehadtheprivilegetointerviewher. Thisisthesecondpart. Ifyoumissedthefirstpart,readitonwww.bostondeafcatholic.org.TellusaboutDeafCatholicinSlovakia.There aremoredeafCatholics25 years ago than it is todaydue to lackofinterpreters. Deafpeople inSlovakiahavedifficultyreadingtheBible. A fewgoodpriestshelpeda fewdeafpeople to stay connectedwithGod. ThedeafCatholic have a lot of activities such as annual retreats, pilgrimages toRomeeverytenyears,BibleStudythroughvlogs(started2017),bowlingafterWayofthe Cross on Good Friday, Bible study and social every Thursday during teatime. There is an annual one-week summer camp for children ages 7-14 inLuckynearKremnica. InBratislava (Slovakia’s capital), aChristianCenteroftheDeafhasa5-daysummercampforchildren.ThreecitiesinSlovakiahaveMass inSlovakiaSignLanguage(SSL);onecity iseverySundayandtheothertwocitiesonceamonth.WhatdidyoulearnaboutyourvisitwithBostonDeafCatholic?Danawould love to see Slovakia have similar deaf Catholic community asBoston.DanawassurprisedtolearnthatDeafpeoplecandoEucharistduringMass. Dananoted their good volunteerism, ICDAboard retreat andmonthlygeneralmeetings. She likes thepotluck idea, good tohaveallDeaf cookandshare food. She was impressed with Fr. Shawn and his office work. Sheexpresses thanks to Fr. Shawn and the host, Johnston Family, forwelcomingher.GodblessthemandhelptheBostonDeafCatholicCommunity.WhatareyourhopesforInternationalCatholicDeafinthefuture?DanahopestheEuropeanmeetingofdeafCatholicscontinues.Themeetinglastyearwasheld inPoland. Nextyear in2020, itwillbe inGermany. DanahopesinterpretersituationwillimproveandmorepriestslearnSSL.TherearethreearchdiocesesinSlovakia.DanaispartoftheBratislavaArchdiocese.Shehopes they will empower the deaf Catholic to manage the deaf Catholiccommunity.TeachusSlovakiaSignLanguage!Keep an eye onwww.bostondeafcatholic.org for the instructional vlog andlearnSlovakiaSignLanguage(SSL)fromDana!
