MESSAGE FROM FATHER TOM
Today‟s first reading
makes reference to a
condition of which we are
more aware in these
troubled times. In 1967,
when Pope Paul VI wrote
Populorum Progressio
(On the Development of
Peoples), he declared, “…
superfluous wealth of rich countries should be
placed at the service of poor nations." Time
magazine of 7 April 1967 quoted the pope and
continued, “Otherwise…the „continued greed‟
of the rich nations „will certainly call down
upon them the judgment of God and the wrath
of the poor, with consequences no one can
foretell‟.” The Time article further quotes the
pope: “It is unfortunate that a system has been
constructed which considers profit as the key
motive for economic progress, competition as
the supreme law of economics, and private
ownership of the means of production as an
absolute right that has no limits and carries no
corresponding social obligation.” Again quoting
the pope‟s encyclical Time states, “private
ownership „does not constitute for anyone an
absolute and unconditional right. No one is
justified in keeping for his exclusive use what
he does not need when others lack necessities.
The right to property must never be exercised to
the detriment of the common good‟.” Some
critics called this Pope Paul‟s “leftist”
encyclical but the pope was trying to come to
terms with Gospel values for the times and
conditions of his world. His words took a
different perspective than his predecessor, Pope
John XXIII, or the earlier Pope Leo XIII, but
what he wrote is now part of the Church‟s
Tradition and should be pondered, especially in
the light of today‟s reading from Acts and the
economic crisis in today‟s world. Today is also
Divine Mercy Sunday. That mercy was
extended to the apostle Thomas who doubted
and that mercy continues to be extended to each
of us as we strive for faithfulness. May we be
instruments of that mercy towards the many
across the globe who are our brothers and
sisters.

There is no charge but donations are always accepted. They are now looking for groups, individuals, or families that might take one Saturday night each month and prepare something nutritious and good. It does not have to be fancy and could be hot dogs and baked beans, sloppy joe’s, etc. There will be a sign up sheet on the Gathering Space Table for the remaining months in 2009.
