7TH SUNDAY OF EASTER ASCENSION SUNDAY MAY 16/17, 2015
This next week I will be traveling to the Diocese of Las Vegas to
attend the National Meeting of Diocesan Mission Directors. This
is an annual meeting when Diocesan directors from throughout
our country gather to review the work that we have done over the
past year and strategize for the year to come. I have been serving
as our diocesan director since 2002, so I am one of the senior
directors in attendance. That doesn’t really mean anything in
particular except that I am vulnerable to being appointed to vari-
ous committees that serve the National Office located in New
York City. Thus far I have been able to avoid those extra assign-
ments with the excuse that I have more than enough to do with
being a pastor, dean and diocesan director. Please keep me in
your prayers during my travel to and from the meeting. I will be
returning on Friday, May 29th.
One of the tasks that I have as Diocesan Director is the assign-
ment of missionary fraternities and those diocese that are in mis-
sionary areas to each of the parishes within our Diocese.
Through what is called the Missionary Coop Appeal, each parish
hosts a missionary during a summer weekend, listening to an ex-
planation of the needs of that particular missionary endeavor. A
collection is then taken up to assist this missionary work. Our
Diocese invites approximately 30 different missionary groups to
make an appeal. The aggregate amount that is raised each year is
@ $150,000. It takes a good deal of coordination for all of this to
work smoothly. For the most part it does, but now and then there
are a few “bumps” along the way.
Having just completed the assignments, I wish to inform the pa-
rishioners of Saint Mary that we will have a different assignment
of missionaries that what we have had in past years. For the past
three years we heard and responded to an appeal from our Dioce-
san Orphanage, Casa Hogar Juan Pablo II (The House/home of
John Paul II). This year on the weekend of July 25-26 we shall
host the Missionary Fraternity of Mary. Father Alex Rodriguez, a
priest of the Fraternity currently assigned to Kenya will be mak-
ing the appeal. The Fraternity of Mary has over 200 ordained
priests serving sixty-four missions in thirty-one diocese in eleven
countries. Currently they have approximately 170 seminarians in
various stages of formation at their seminary in Guatemala. As
we get closer to the weekend of Father Rodriguez’ coming, more
information will be shared with you.
This may be a little disappointing to those of you who have de-
veloped a particular affection and loyalty to Casa Hogar Orphan-
age. However, it is important for the story of Casa Hogar to be
shared with other parishes throughout our Diocese. Please know
that you can continue to give your support to Casa Hogar. Place
your donation in an envelope marked for that purpose and I will
make certain it gets to the right place.
I thank all of you for your uncommon generosity to the missions.
As has been pointed out, our parish is in the top five of all parish-
es within our Diocese for generosity to the missions. That is a
remarkable feat.
Until I write again, may God bless you and all the parishioners of
Saint Mary Parish.
