VUE FROM THE G REE NS
October has come and gone and, for the most part, so has the sea-son. The month, much like the entire season, brought highs and lows when it comes to the weather. We were blessed with great weather and perfect conditions for the Lesley Cup during the first week, and then cooler tem-peratures and periods of rain settled in to hamper closing events. It truly has been quite the season when it comes to weather extremes, from record breaking rainfall to drought and heat. I can only imagine what winter has in store; however, there are a lot of good things happening on the course.
During the second half of the month, beneficial cultural practices of venting/aeration were completed on all playing surfaces. A healthy dose of topdressing sand was applied to tees and approaches to improve firmness and growing medium. The fairways were sliced with hopes of one additional application prior to the ground freezing in middle to late No-vember. Greens will be needle-tined and topdressed during the first of November depending on weather. An additional light topdress application will be applied to both tees and approaches as well; my goal is to provide an adequate coat of sand to protect the crowns of all playing surfaces going into the winter months.
Outside of cultural practices, multiple in-house and outsourced projects have started on the property. The first phase of the cart path installation/repaving project began during the third week of October on #8 and #9. The cart path has been re-routed to the right side of #8 green (wrapping around the back) to improve turf quality in between #8 and #9 tees. An installation was completed to the left of #9 tees to reduce the congestion and traffic flow while improving player safety in a tight area. Finally, the existing path was re-paved across the land bridge with an exten-sion to the crest of the hill. XGD is scheduled to install drainage into #5 green, our final green, during the first week of November. Our first in-house construction project began on #16 white/gold tee during the last week of October. In conjunction with the new tee on #16, the forward tee will be lengthened and widened to create additional tee space. Following #16, we will move to #10 and begin work on lengthening the bottom tee to create additional tee space for the black and blue players. While on #10, we will make the forward green tee larger to provide an optional teeing ground for the red tee players and break all three tees into individual boxes on the upper tee. Once the upper tee of #10 is completed, only #13 tee remains to finish the tee identity pro-ject of all tees being the classic squared look.
As you can see, a lot is happening on the course and we apologize in advance for any inconvenience during any bonus days of golf that remain as winter approaches. Please remem-ber to follow us on twitter and our blog to stay up to date on all the projects over the next couple of months. Finally, I wanted to mention to the membership that we plan to start selling the fire-wood that we have accumulated over my first few years (Check the blog for additional details). If interested, please contact Matt Wolfe via email at [email protected]. Till then, we look for-ward to seeing you on the course! Fairways and Dreams,
Josh A. Saunders and The Greens Staff
